Is it on rails or wheels? I can't quite tell what the things under the wheels are.

Also, it should've been wider AND bigger - encompassing at least two lanes, and about 200 or so people.

In China the way auto insurance works, at least for truckers, it's bettecheaper to kill someone in a traffic accident than to pay their med bills the rest of their life.

It's why there are so many videos of trucks accelerating into their victims rather than attempting to swerve / stop
>>
>>55898754
Or people having panic attacks with this thing above them and causing accidents.
>>
>>55899334
Its a full scale prototype. It will take about a year or so to test out the kinks and patch it. Then the real rollout will happen. They will test out whether or not the height limit is good or not, whether or not traffic is impeded or not, whether or not, whether or not the scalability factor is there or not, and as well as the usual QA shits.

China is the new USSR.
If they said they'd do something that's a matter of prestige, they'll do it even if it's not practical or causes problems.
Then there's the fact that just like anywhere else, if there's government money to be spent people will spend it (ghost cities etc. doesn't matter, boosts GDP makes good propaganda)
And of course China is corrupt as fuck, you can rest assured corners were cut and aparatchik pockets were lined. Lots of chinese will die in stupid ways just like they always do.

Why do people keep calling this a bus?
It requires specialized rails. It's a train. A raised train where the tracks are still at street level for some reason.

It's a pretty shit idea.
And they could have literally just built a raised train/trolley track and been done with the project by now. Requires as much/less construction time. And it wouldn't be a proprietary mess.

A train is a chain of vehicles pulled along by a locomotive, this thing is a single vehicle and it is self-motive.
>>
>>55899526
>if its not practical
I'd say its the opposite. You don't give China enough credit.

China has issues with quality control on its cheap shits that it exports. However this doesn't translate into well funded, well structured government projects.

They have quite a bit of corruption issues that effects their ability to manage things efficiently, and even with those issues, their efficiency is beyond that of the western countries. That is, they haven't reached their ceiling yet.

Their economy is real and not just artificial, although there's some artificial booms like the housing market.
>>
>>55899667

>>
>>55899776

>>55899825
If same thing happened in US, the executives would get bonuses and the tax payers would have to pay to fix the issue.
>>55899861
No, the CCP propaganda of China is too rosey. Meanwhile the western media propaganda image of China is one of paper dragon. (Ironically China sees the west as a paper tiger).

Reality is China has come a long way and each decade, they make huge leaps in economy. The communist party is corrupt with nepotism being rampant, but because they're mostly well educated and want to advance their country/family/political beliefs, they would try to create a better system each time.

China today is lot more free'r than it was 10 years ago. China 10 years ago was lot more free'r than 20 years ago, etc. By free'r, I meant economically and culturally. Each decade they become more and more prosperous and at the same time, more and more liberal.

Their state still has hardlines that push hardline shit, but the big picture is getting better and better.

Replace them. It's not a gimmick for places like Paris or China, where putting subways down would be either impossible or so financially costly that its financially impossible to make a return on investment.
These are meant to be cheap & easy to implement.
>>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzpU4RjjJ8k
>>
>>55902027
There are ways to build subways underneath developed cities without causing disruptions.

Paris doesn't want to bother because they don't want to destroy the catacombs.
>>
>>55902072
Its not just because they don't want to, its because they literally cannot. If they do, their whole city could crumble into the ground.
Nobody ever really bothered to map out the many, many mines that were dug under Paris. Nobody knows where they go, how many there are, how deep they are or how structurally sound they are.
Can't bring heavy digging ordinance into the fray.

I looked into the their fix. They installed a laser that detects the height of trucks and installed lights and digital notice board that tells the trucks to turn.

It cost them $300,000.

I reckon they don't want to work on the road because of structural integrity issues when rail road bridge + sewer underneath. They'd rather trucks take detours.

Its been going on for decades far as locals are concerned.

Notice that it's mostly people with rental trucks and RVs.

Believe it or not, you do not need any sort of training or licensing to operate a fucking RV in the united states, even though it is it literally a FULL SIZE BUS in all but name.

If you have a class C, you can drive an RV.

With their new system, if you drive up and you're too tall, it puts up a red light and forces you to wait 50 seconds with a sign saying "OVERHEIGHT MUST TURN".

In that case another simple solution would be to make it even lower, so it's completely obvious that nothing but cars can pass under.

The real problem is people thinking it's a normal height, and thus not paying any attention to the signs.
>>
>>55902424
Subways are never above ground, by their very definition. That's what's classified as overground track.
A subway can lead to overground, but its no longer a subway track if it is overground.

Depends on the state, but sort of. In CA for example a class C license is good for a two axle vehicle under 26000lbs or a three axle vehicle under 6000lbs. A large class A rv usually requires a noncommercial license due to the size, weight, and frequent usage of air brakes. I lived in a 26' class A using a Chevy van chassis (P30 IIRC) for a year and that was dry and unloaded around 25,500 lbs. Even for one person it's a rather small RV, the bus chassis ones get incredibly heavy.
Mostly unfortunately it's just olds who never measure their vehicle properly that hit things and are oblivious to the issues with the size of them, not too many younger people go for a vehicle that costs as much as a house. Those that do tend to end up in much older ones, in poorly maintained ones or both.

>>
>>55903954
while i agree that there's too much red tape in the US, china is on the other extreme. people are definitely going to get killed in the first wave of those things and it'll be obvious that rubber stamped proposals, briberies, and corruption had a hand in it.

a lot of shit is dangerous. the US errs on the side of caution. so does the EU for that matter. so does basically every developed part of the world. only in shitholes with extant overpopulation issues does the government seem to not give a shit about fragging a few of their own.

tesla's just navigating the red tape. this is the point of red tape; that self driving cars don't just get carte blanche just because there's not technically anything on the books about it yet.

uber is a good example of a company that's utterly failing (or refusing) to navigate red tape. they generally just ignore the regulations, show up, and then back out when there are enough customers who will be pissed off and writing letters to their representatives when the punishments and regulations take effect. happened in portland, NYC, and now austin. it happens a lot in china too except that china's leaders literally don't give a shit about the people, so uber's plan of getting customers to get upset at politicians for not letting uber do whatever they want ended up fizzling (oh and that happened to antagonize the leaders, just incentivizing them supporting didi kuaidi (not that they needed much incentive to support a chinese company, but there you go)).

i'm not trying to cast the red tape here as something that's good or bad. or rather, not just one. red tape is the institutional pumping of the brakes on dangerous, speculative rushing into markets (not just self driving cars, but drones etc...). that can be a good thing and a bad thing.

the narrative that tesla "are not caving in" almost seems to heroize tesla. they're just a company going through the paperwork to get approved to do business. don't dramatize it.

I'm not sure how to feel about this. It might just be my claustrophobia speaking, but it seems to me to be a little too short.

On the one hand, it's for cities where truck traffic can be restricted; I wouldn't expect 14-foot clearance or anything like that. And 7 feet is about average clearance for a parking garage in the US.

But still, couldn't they have given it a little bit more clearance? Of course I didn't engineer this thing, but I don't think another foot or so higher would've hurt it.
