Last I remember they added some extra days (180 or 360 days, don't recall) for free.

Personally I use my macbook as a wank station so I don't have the need for an antivirus

All (((free anti-viruses)) are borderline malware. Even then, their signatures are updated last. Windows Defender or Linux are the only good free options. I always had good luck with Trend Micro as far as paid anti-virus is concerned.
