Ah, bovinated shitboxes! Still not as bad as eMachines.

Is it bad that the vintage of the shit on these threads is moving forwards? No BBC Micro? No C=64? No ORIC-1? No PDP-11 or VAXen?

I know my hair's going white but I don't feel this old. Newfags will never know the horrors of twiddling a screwdriver to adjust the tracking of your cassette tape so it sounds nice and sharp not muffled, and adjusting the volume that fraction of a mm so maybe it'll load this time - you'll find out in 5 minutes...

Don't mistake this for nostalgia. New technology is brilliant. Old technology was a bit shit, we were just used to it. That's probably what we'll be staying about this in a decade or two.

Didn't the 3,5' solve the R/W protection issue?
>>
>>55895631
It had nothing to do with R/W protection.

The purpose of drilling and stamping disks is to double the capacity.
3.5" Double Density floppies stored about 720 kB.
3.5" High Density floppies stored about 1440 kB.

The density was marked with a second hole on the top left. Due to the rules of mass production most DD floppies were actually HD, just lacking the marker hole.

That's why we drilled floppies back in the day.
There were no stamps for 3.5", only for 5.25"

5.25" floppies were all the same density but the hole allowed you to store data on the other side.

5.25" stamp
3.5" drill

Tape is still in use today, Google uses it for backup even. Pic related.

It's incredibly cheap for long term storage, even for the home user. The drives have a decently high price on them but the tapes themselves are crazy, with a bit of shopping around you can get 3TB tapes for $25

You will never find better price:size ratio for storage, just be sure you don't intend to keep retrieving files off it all the time, it's slow.

That tape helps prevent people sticking in non-agp cards into a universal slot that didn't have voltage keys (plastic tabs) to help deter stupidity. Original spec had the right slot be longer so it prevented non agp cards from being inserted. When agp pro cards were supported the left slot was added and it made it possible to go full retard and insert non agp cards. Shit design. You could stick "agp pro" cards that took extra power. The card pictured is a universal card that accepted old and new spec for voltage.

Yeah, that is part of the function.
It is plastic fan holder from the front-bottom area of 1997-98 AT case (but ATX could have it too).

The nice thing about it are the rims facing into the inside of the case - those should be there for support of extra long PCI/ISA cards that reached all the way there*. I never had any such card though, only saw PCB of one back at school - in arts teacher's collection of rubble, incidentally.

*I never saw it used like that, ever though. Maybe some real-oldfag will make fun of me now.

my sister and i would play this when we were really little -- know how at the end there's a village where all the zoombini's who made the journey are able to live out the rest of their lives and you can check up on them? yeah. what we would do is kill off all of the zoombini's who didn't meet certain requirements. All of the zoombinis who lived in the village had at least two eyes and the little tiny tuft of hair. Every. Last. One. we killed off all the other 'undesirable' ones.

It wasn't until i saw this image that i remembered my times playing zoombinis and realized that i was essentially a 4 year old hitler.

I just had to deal with that shit a while ago and I'm really fucking glad that we got rid of that shit.
Some PCs still use IDE, Molex and VGA, but I hope that it soon dies out.
We have SATA and Displayport today. Soon to be SATA and USB.
USB-powered monitors that get USB-based Displayport data on the same cable that does power delivery, straight from the GPU, which takes the extra monitor power from the PSU.
I pray the future happens.

>Cheap
Not really a thing. You can get used LTO-4 drives off ebay. The tapes themselves are relatively cheap.

>VGA could definitely handle 1920x1080 @ 144Hz
Depends on the cable quality. Even shit cables can do 1920x1200 @ 60Hz, but they have a lot of artifacts and ghosting with black on white text.

It's fucking insane how cheap stuff is these days. Every time I see these old magazines it just amazes me how far we've come. 4 GB is like $20.

IDE was originally physically reversible (but not electrically). This resulted in the cable catching fire.

First phone.
Perfecet incarnation of a brick. We never advanced past its flawless haptics.
I wish modern phones would feel as good. It's something that you want to take with you because it's unobtrusive and has proper battery runtime and is cheap enough to not be stolen on vacation, but also good enough to have proper voice quality.

I used a flip phone on vacation that was nice but way too fucking quiet to hear anything if you were outside.

The fact that Siemens stopped making phones is fucking criminal. They were always better than Nokias. Nokias always have at least one or two issues that stop the phone from being perfect. And I've only had Nokias for the past decade.

Kids these days think that FPU is the part of CPU that is used when you play games.

Peepz don't even know there is a difference between x87 and floating point SIMD math, and it doesn't help there is integer SIMD to make the waters more muddy.
