Is classic shell working/do you still have the installer?

If you still have the installer, you can compare the MD5 and SHA1 to the legitimate version, and if they match, you're fine.

If you don't, well if classic shell is working then you probably have a legit one. Can always test by rebooting.

When I had my MBR fucked, it was on Windows 7. I basically googled "restore MBR windows 7", plopped in a pirated Windows 7 DVD, opened up a command prompt and typed in one or two commands, and the thing was fixed.

You're not getting your hard drive erased, it's just the goddamn bootsector. And since the boot code is going to be the same regardless of what the fuck is on your hard drive, Windows can fix it without touching anything. No need for system restore or any of that nonsense.

Classic shell is fucking terrible anyway and doesn't even work like the old one. The Find tab is useless and forces you to click the wrong items constantly by loading in things one at a time, then you have to wait until it's done showing every matching file on your hard drive before you can just run a simple program.

Some people use integrated graphics for GNU/Linux, but I can only have 3 screens on my integrated GPU.
I did see someone that set GNU/Linux up to use the dedicated GPU, and then pass it off the the VM when it was started, which would make GNU/Linux use the integrated graphics. I remember it being complicated to set up though.

I fucked up my MBR a lot of times while installing Linux distros but I didn't blame them because that's just me not being careful. It's the same case for this one, people who get affected by this malware were not careful.

However, you still have to be careful and official websites should provide the hashes on their websites, not just on the download host website. It's not uncommon that fake downloads differs from their sizes and most people would fell for it anyway.
