Local dumbass here... So if I'm using XCode for C/C++ projects, and want to include a file such as
std::ifstream inputFile("folder1/folder2/folder3/porn/notporn/triangle.txt");

What could I do to not have to write all the subdirectories leading to "triangle.txt"? Is it as easy as dragging and dropping the file to the sidebar?

I want to set up LAMP plus a few different application servera and some flavour of the month shit just to go through digitalocean tutorials and learn some more stuff but I have no application to run and no populated database, can anyone point me in the direction of some kind of fairly extensive pre built app/csv data so I can start moving the data around and playing with it? I really don't care what it is, just as long as it has enough meat on its bones for me to play around with setting up clusters and shit and test it effectively. It'll all be on a small private cloud (VCD) of VMs running the latest Ubuntu or CentOS.

I have a 2010 Asus ROG G60jx. I recently installed a new 1TB HDD in it. Last night all 4 USB ports have stopped working. They provide power but nothing plugged into them is detected. Infrequently I get a failed device driver system tray notification. Also, since I changed hard drives I have not been able to get any windows 7 updates as the updater refuses to launch no matter what settings I use. Also when I tried to us the trouble shooter to diagnose the win update not working the trouble shooter refuses to launch and I get error code 0x8E5E0247. Googling this has pointed me towards it being an intel driver issue with the Intel Rapid Storage driver. But I am confused because it is a RAID driver and I am not running a RAID setup. Please help.

What are the fastest Radeon and GeForce GPUs ever made for AGP slots? I can't seem to find any good answers online besides "lol buy a new system", and now I'm honestly curious. My router is causing ridiculous ping. I know for a fact it is my router because everything works perfectly fine until I plug it in (including those connected directly to the source modem/router combo). Is there a skill in tech that I can learn in 9 months that I could get certified in or some shit and be able to get a job? Programming, IT, anything. I can type 130-140 WPM but I got it from gaming and have no skills other than HTML.
>>
>>55875433
I don't even know what bridged mode is, to be honest. I just took a set-up I've been using for years but plugged in a different router. I'll read more about this.

Incidentally, will bridged mode make my network attached storage via USB port on the router available to everyone on the network?
>>
>>55875480
Gonna be a daddy?
>>
>>55875495
You want to turn off the routing function that's bult into the gateway. You probably won't be able to access its settings anymore. Then it wont really matter what you do on the router. The usb will be available to every device connected to it's router, unless you have security settings in place to stop that
>>
>>55875498
Hah, wrong choice of time frame I guess, looks pretty desperate from that viewpoint kek

Just looking for an employable skill that I can pick up quickly.
>>
>>55875522
I don't suppose I have another option that will keep the networks distinct, do I? I looked it up and bridging my router would prevent me from using the USB port. At this point I may as well dig up the old piece of shit WRT54G that I know will work.

Any router nesting comes with some penalty. You probably just didn't notice it before. And you can do it, it's just not ideal. Making a network within a network screws up your NAT and latency by nature.

If you're actually catching trojans that you've actually allowed to enter your system and run, your real problem is security and I would change the way you do things pronto.

But back to the problem at hand. Your picrelated is saying that some of your system files are corrupted. You can try running sfc from safe mode. If that doesn't work there's the 'system update readiness tool' that might. You can also manually replace the broken files

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929833

http://www.howtogeek.com/222532/how-to-repair-corrupted-windows-system-files-with-the-sfc-and-dism-commands/
>>
>>55875760
You're dealing with absolute vs relative filenames. When your program runs, it runs from the folder that the main code is in. If the file is in the same folder as main.c them you can use the relative filename, i.e. without all the folders.
>>
>>55875810
You might have an additional problem. But if your old router wasn't in client/access point/bridging mode then it wasn't doing as good as it could have been.

Is it better to use the default open source driver for AMD or the proprietary? Will it make a difference as far as general performance and power efficiency? I'm more concerned with the latter, not gaming here. I have an APU if that makes a difference.

>If you're actually catching trojans that you've actually allowed to enter your system and run, your real problem is security and I would change the way you do things pronto.
Probably came in the keygen for the cracked version of FL Studio I downloaded. But yeah I should be more careful.

>You can try running sfc from safe mode. If that doesn't work there's the 'system update readiness tool' that might. You can also manually replace the broken files
I will try those. Manually replacing corrupted files sounds tedious but I'll do it. If all those don't work is it clean install time?

Yeah a clean install is a good catch all for this sort of thing. If you go that rout, I would flip through your bios and make sure any raid options get turned off, then after you reinstall 7 follow this

http://wu.krelay.de/en/2016-07.htm

and install:
support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3172605

to get your updates running. Then once you've got everything set up (that you're absolutely sure is virus free) back it all up with macrium reflect so if anything ever goes wrong again you can have it all fixed in like a half hour. It's hella nice

I'm building my first PC and I was told by the wiki to post my build here before I by it in case I'm dumb as fuck and missed something. http://pcpartpicker.com/list/Q7Z7TH

Here's what it'll be used for:

1. Gaming - Should be able to run games like Overwatch on high settings at 1080p, but I don't really care if it can run on super high settings on 1440p or anything like that.

2. Programming - I'm a software dev. I'm assuming any pc capable of running modern games at high settings will be more than enough for any kind of programming, but what do I know.

3. Dual booting Windows/Linux. I know there are sometimes issues with BIOS when trying to dualboot Linux, but I don't have a lot of experience in this area.

Thank ya

Drop the H60, no point in using it in a mid tower case where a conventional heat sink will perform just as well for cheaper.

GTX 970 is obsolete, get either a GTX 1060 or RX 480
>>
>>55876163
1) don't get a 970 unless it's on an insane sale for like $225 or less, get an rx 480 or a 1060 instead

2) get a 212 evo instead of an h60, or at least google some comparisons before you buy. i regret getting my h60- it's overpriced and apparently louder/weaker than a 212 evo. it looks cool in my s340 case, and it's low profile is nice, but it's apparently not that great. the stock fan is really loud too, i had to replace mine with a noctua fan. i did the research too and found out the 212 evo will fit in an s340 case, so you're good on that front.

3) i have the same case, cpu, mobo and cooler- they all look and work great together. i have a1070 with a supernova 550w and it works fine, so depending on the video card you buy, a 650w might be slightly overkill.
>>
>>55876314

What's wrong with reference cards? I've never heard about them until just now, but from my quick research, why would I not want a card that conforms strictly to the specs from Nvidia/AMD?
>>
>>55876519
Also, how can you tell if it's a reference card or not?
>>
>>55876519
Because the specs are ass. Nvidia/amd put out the minimal specs and lets the manufacturers do something decent with them

Reference cards are the minimum spec
Aftermarket cards will generally have better cooling, clock speeds and often better power delivery.

I'm opening up my laptop for the first time for a dusting, seems easy with all the tutorials out there even if I'm going to have to totally dismantle this thing just to get to the fan and heatsink. I'm scared so I have some questions:
Is a can of compressed air really enough? I kind of want this thing to be like new again, will any small paintbrush do for finer cleaning? Is there a method to brushing away dust from certain parts, or is is it just like dusting anything else? Are there things I absolutely should not touch no matter what?
It's kind of an old laptop so I was also thinking of reapplying thermal paste. Do I just get the old stuff off with any random rag? I've seen arctic silver pastes being recommended, are there others I should consider?
Sorry for all the dumb questions, pls someone hold my hand very firmly
>>
>>55876571
They're the ones who manufacture the chips, but the rest of the card is done by other companies. You might get a slightly better deal buying reference, but it's usually not worth it.

Just got a bunch of new pc parts, my case is coming in the mail tomorrow afternoon. Just realized my 2007 500w PSU most likely will not be able to handle an i5, a 750 TI (waiting for new cards to release), an SSD, a hard drive, and an extra fan.
What PSUs are good at about 550-600 watts? Needs to fit in a node 304 micro case.

**Newegg power calculator gave me 483 watts with the HDD, and 479 watts with the SSD.

The REAL question I have is should I install my SSD or my hard drive for the time being? I imagine it's simpler to move a few rando files from the SSD than a whole OS.

Now I know why I'm in the stupid questions general.

How much space does a clean Win7 install take up, roughly? I want to dualboot it with Xubuntu but my laptop drive has very limited space and I'd rather not spend the monies to get a larger SSD. Have about 300 GiB, right now I'm looking at this partition setup (in this order):

C: -- 50 GiB, NTFS (Win7 system)
/boot -- 500 MiB, Ext2 (Linux kernels)
/ -- 15.5 MiB, Ext4 (Xubuntu root)
swap -- 4 GiB, swap (Xubuntu swap)
D: -- 10 GiB, NTFS (shared data partition for Win7 and Xubuntu)
/home -- 220 GiB, Ext4 (Xubuntu home)

Will this work? Should I change any of the partition sizes or positions?
Right now I'm running Xubuntu only. The plan is to
> back all data up
> wipe disk
> erase partition table
> install Win7, only create C: and D: leaving unpartitioned space where the Linux partitions will go
> install Linux, creating /, /boot, /home and swap where unpartitioned space is

Windows can get kinda hefty once you throw in updates. But disabling pagefile and hibernation assuming you don't care about hibernation and you never run out of ram. Try using rt7lite and guides to remove the elements of windows 7 that you don't want. You can massively cut down it's size that way.

Laptops will stay expensive as fuck for a long time and companies will keep making shitty laptops because people buy them so they have no reason to improve other than adding more gimmicks and tricks.

Because Intel makes better CPUs overall for single core stuff which everyone looks because games.

But AMD makes better APUs and low end computers.
Also anything that uses more than 6 cores runs better on AMD but its rare.

>>55877599
Yes, shit singlecore perfomance and most cores of the FX wont be used.
You get more weak cores rather than less strong cores.
That is how stuff works with DX11 and how it has worked for a long time now.

DX12 and Vulkan are supposed to do wonders with AMD because load will be spread on all cores but theyre not popular yet.

I've been out of the CPU game since I got my 3770k and my Gigabyte UP7 ate shit 1 week inside of warranty but they fucked me over.

IIRC, it's dependent on the game itself.
That said, the FX were a weird chip. Temp diodes DOA and hungry for wattage.

So, depends on the game I guess but as a whole, I think the i5/i7 architecture was somewhat more efficient with thread efficiency at the time.

I bought a good PC from a friend and he gave it to me for a super low price as he was gonna move out of the country.

The PC is great and boots up to desktop within 6 seconds due to Sandybridge or something.

However when I play video games or do some intense work (if GPU based) on the computer the GPU will reach to 80 celsius.

I've read that the computer will start to cap the GPUs power once it hits 80 celsius to not overheat it so I am wondering if anyone have any good fan installation tutorials or recommendations.

Anything that handles chassi fans and gpu ones would be great.

I need a computer for video editing at home. At work, we all use 27 inch iMacs and Mac Pros. Are there any good guides on how to choose parts for an editing PC build? Basically every guide online I find is gaming oriented, and I'm not sure if editing and gaming need similar specs.

The reason I'm asking here is because nobody at work (myself included. I only know "muh RAM") actually knows anything about the technology.

I have something weird going on with my 2012 laptop, I haven't been able to find someone that has exactly my problem, only similar issues. I'm going to have to describe this in a retarded way, but I don't know what to do anymore, so bear with me please
>doing intensive task like playing games etc
>monitor temps with speccy, CPU and motherboard go above 60° (wich as far as I know are nowhere near overheat temps) , gpu is slightly cooler at nearly all times
>screen goes slightly darker as if I removed the power plug, then it turns off completely in a second or two
>sometimes the screen will go dark as above for a few seconds during gameplay but won't shut off, however after a few more minutes it will shutdown
What do? I tried running with just battery or just plugged in without battery but it happened regardless. I'm a retard so I usually leave the laptop plugged in all day charging, I knew it would shorten battery lifespan and didn't really care much but then this happened some time ago. Could this be a power/psu related issue?
And what's even more bizarre, it doesn't happen 'consistently':
>start avoiding playing games and such since the laptop turns off
>after a few months start playing games again
>get away with it for a month or so, then issue comes back
Any ideas?

I have no idea how to contact Facebook and I imagine the only thing Google could do to help me would be to change my number. Though that's cumbersome since I've owned this number for a few weeks now and asking all my contacts to update my number is bothersome.

This is so annoying.

you could also just start shitposting through that number on his facebook account.
eventually he'll remove it on his own.

new to foobar2k, i'm switching from musicbee
one thing i loved about musicbee was when you hover over the musicbee icon in the taskbar while music is playing, the little preview pane that pops up has playback controls
is there a foobar extension that lets you do this? its soooooo convenient
>>
>>55880810
It won't take long to ask three people update your number to the new one

I'm a nice person though. I don't want to act like some 4chinz hacker.

Though I wonder if he already knows since I logged into his account already. I'm sure it must've notified him or something. The poor guy.

>>55880853
contact him on facebook and demand that he changes it or threaten him with recovering his account

What's the cheapest eGPU setup for a macbook? I was looking at the akitio thunderbox but even that's like $200 not including the card or a compatible PSU.

Mine does it by default.
I just assigned one of the gaymur keys on my mouse:
Play/pause

Button + scroll for volume

Too late for that actually, I just finished talking with Project Fi support about a number change.
I'm actually surprised at how easy contacting support was in contrast to how fucking impossible it seems to contact Facebook. What gives man.

The support guy assured me the process of changing my number would take up to 24 hours so I could have time to unlink some of my accounts that I have attached to my phone number for security.

But only moments after ending my chat with support was my number swiftly changed like it was nothing. I even asked him specifically to delay the change.
Now I have more annoying things to deal with.

What computer specs should I look for if I want to develop android apps, play normal video games (CS:GO, Overwatch, Runescape3), and run a multi monitor setup (one 1440 monitor, one 1080 monitor)? Thank you for any help.

you wouldn't recommend a quad core?
>>
First build, PC posted first time but only seemed to pick up 1 stick of RAM. Reseated the stick, but now my PC doesn't post (no display when plugged into GPU/mobo) and is stuck in a reboot loop every 10 sec or so. CPU_LED stays red. All the fans spin. I swapped the sticks around in different slots and tried one at a time, still persists.

What do you guys think it could be? I've ordered a new mobo and some RAM just to narrow down things a little. Everything's under warranty so if it's the PSU/CPU, I'll return them. Really hoping that it's not those two, though.

>>
>>55881296
The skylake i3 outperforms the older quad cores, if you really feel like you need the extra cores, you may as well go for the skylake i5. But for the vidya you plan on playing it doesn't seem all that necessary.

I want to make the switch over to LINUX but I am kind of wary to do so. I'm not so tech savy in coding languages and anything of the sort but I'm tech savy besides that.
All I use my laptop for is browsing the internet, downloading movies/anime, school work (writing papers) and sometimes I play games.
I looked at the sticky and couldn't find anything on what distros to get or any guides. So any help would be awesome.

>>55881441
You don't need to program to use Linux

Of course Windows programs don't work on linux by deafault, but there are many free alternative, and with some tinkering in W.I.N.E. many windows programs are supported. Linux has a knack for running very smoothly until some weird problem comes up, then it’s off to the forums. Luckily you don’t have to dive in all at once. You can start by running a copy within windows using VMware or Virtualbox, and if that goes well, try a dual boot. Linux Mint is an excellent beginner distro while still being able to use the ubuntu online community and many guides for beginners. A great way to minimize risk before shrinking windows or trying a dual boot is to do a complete system backup with Macrium Reflect or similar. And after installing linux, I recommend downloading the third party (PPA) program Timeshift as a kind of equivalent to Windows Restore, to help you undo most minor mistakes without hours of searching through forums. Good luck!
>>
>>55881524
Thank you. Linux Mint seems to be a good place to start so I'll be setting that up later today.

I have a small 5gb file from an old virtual machine, I want to compress it as much as possible for storage. I have 7-zip in windows, what are the best settings for the smallest size? Dont care about time it takes.
>>
>>55881983
lzma2, solid block size, largest word size, largest dictionary size as your RAM allows it.
>>
>>55881895
I don't get it, do AMD cards require better CPUs than Nvidia's?
>>
>>55882005
AMD does more in the driver than nvidia.

is pacman a piece of shit and sudo the masterrace? what even is the difference? other than the commands in pacman making little to zero sense
>>
>>55882066
pacman and sudo are two very different things, and neither are masterrace.
>>
>>55882005
Yeah, Nvidia handles a lot more CPU related tasks on-die than amd. So if you've got a weak CPU then Nvidia is a lot less likely to be hurt by it. It's one of a handful of traits that usually always lean one way or the other when comparing the two companies.

>>55882045
That depends on whether you're talking current generation or extended support.

I'm trying to set a fallback font for chinese characters but it just doesn't werk.
fc-match lang:cn
outputs the same as default font. I am 100% certain that my config file is parsed.

I have a desktop with a 2 TB hard drive and a 128 G ssd that runs Windows 7 and it's mostly for gaymes but also schoolwork. Along with this I have my ThinkPad that is running arch at the moment. I'm looking for an external hard drive and I don't know what size I was thinking 1 or 2 TB. I'd really just be backing up schoolwork and my linux partitions.
>>
>>55880910
how the heck does yours do it by default?
its not like there's multiple versions of foobar (as far as i know) so you must have gotten some addon or setting that lets you do that
also no gaymur mouse for me

It would make sense. Although it could just have easily come from amd positioning themselves as the economy to nvidia/intel's premium and people liking to brag about spending more.

Guys, now that the W10 nagware has ended, windows update is working again and notifying me of new updates being available for download. Does anyone have a list of updates that I should avoid to minimize snooping and future nagging? I know it can't be avoided, but I'd like to avoid the very worst updates.
