What's sad is that much safer electric showers exist. They keep everything away from the head itself, and have a "buffer" of sorts so the water has longer to heat up

Usually houses in tropical climates dont have a main heater to feed the whole house because there is no need for one. So they just use electric showers.

Clearly he is. Water isn't conductive enough for that to dissipate enough power for a tankless water heater. I installed one that required 3 240V branch circuits at I think 40A a piece. From what I gather that wasn't considered big.

The setup looks safe as long as you don't get water on the wires or grab them. People who live where electric codes haven't nerfed everything tend to be smarter about shit like that. As long as that water pipe is grounded and the heater itself isn't a complete fuck up in design you're good.

My gf has a shower just like this one. The first time I went there I was surprised because I had no idea people actually did this with their showerheads.

I was even more scared the first time I took a shower there. Nothing has ever happened to her nor her family in the years they've been using it though. I think you guys are exaggerating a little bit.

Even if there was a perfect connection to the pipe, there would have to be a steady, unbroken stream for current to pass through the water. And even on that situation there would be a monumental amount of losses back to ground.

Those showerheads were brought into Brazil by a italian (Lorenzetti). They're cheap as fuck, and the risk is not of being electrocuted while showering, but when you need to switch from Cold to Hot or Off. Most of the shocks I've seen were from people who tried to turn the heat up or down while showering.

We have the gas model too, but since the installation cost is through the roof (mind you, you get all that back just in electric bills), and most people who install it are dumbfucks, we actually have a higher mortality rate from the gas model than the electric model.

I had one of those in my old house, and it gave up after 6 or 7 months. The problem? The water here has all sorts of metals in it, so the stored water (when the shower isn't turned on) ended up corroding the circuits to the heater.

Favorite indeed, in the sense that it works that is. 200m+ people use it every day and there is way more accidents related to stupid people climbing utility poles and getting electrocuted than shower related ones.

Some extra info, here in Brasil all piping is made from PVC especially electric shower pipes, you really, really need to want to fuck with the installation to injury yourself on one. Power rating goes for abour 4.4kw/h for the shitty ones to about 7-8kw/h for the good stuff.

Those at-the-shower-head water heaters in developing countries work really well, and I assume are more efficient than keeping all the water in the pipes hot all the time as in developed countries.

Your water heaters probably use an immersion heater with exposed elements, if not you have most certainly unwittingly used them countless times before. The heated shower head is essentially the same thing except you're not separated from the element by 2-3m of water pipe. It's not unusual to use metal water pipes as ground and in these cases not connecting the ground wire would make little difference to the safety of the head.
