Thinkpad X220

Like:
Super cheap (300€ refurbished and that was a bad deal)
Upgraded to 10GB ram and 250GB SSD for another 120€ so no I handles all tasks I do on it fine (office stuff, browsing, data analysis in R) and is performing well at that.
Keyboard is godlike
Track point is nice once you get used to it
Really small and portable
Feels solid and well-made, outside finish really nice
Good connection options (VGA and Ethernet plus 3 USB ports) so I can attach a monitor and a mouse to it and have a cosy setup at work

Cons:
Screen is too dark in light situations and only 720p, plus it's 16:9
So little screen real estate without extra monitor
The fans get really loud even when idling on windows 7, so I only use Linux now, where the fans only get loud under heavy load
>>

Hi guys, I need a cheap laptop and I am actually interested in a Chromebook since they're cheap. Need it for an internship in a 3rd world country and I am not bringing my Dell XPS 15 since I would murder myself if it gets stolen.

What is the best chromebook I can get? Heard all these review sites get paid by companies.

Comfy bed web browser, battery is still in very good (90%) condition after 600 cycles

$1750 AUD, the price of the rMBP13 is so fucking high atm thanks to our shitty dollar, compared to $2499 now for a mid range model.

Would love the new Alienware 15 if it weren't for the shitty design. Stupid good battery life for goofing around the internet and has top-tier performance when you need it.

+ Battery life, has the option for a 9 cell battery which will give me 15 hours of web browsing
+ Has ODD and all the ports of a regular business laptop except it's the size of an A4 piece of paper
+ Not plastic, sturdy as fuck and with great hinges
+ Easy access, one magnesium door at the bottom
+ Can do RAID 0 if you replace the ODD with a 2.5" cradle, supports 9mm HDDs
+ Trackpint is good, but the touchpad is amazing

> What you hate about it
- Dim, washed out blueish TN panel, better than the X220 TN, but far inferior to the IPS
- Pathetic LED light that's supposed to illuminate the keyboard

>>55864957
Yeah, could be just skin rubbing on it over and over, that would get past the anodized layer after a while.
>>
>>55864965
This isn't corrosion, either, this is actually worn past the anodizing. I've seen this, but only in very high use situations with people who don't care about the machine, like libraries or schools. Not just on MacBooks, either.
>>55864984
>Yeah, could be just skin rubbing on it over and over,
I would guess things like jewelry, watches, rings, maybe, if they are stored in a large bag, other items hitting the laptop. This is just a thing that happens, anything anodized that is rubbed against will show wear eventually.

>>
>>55865199
Hmm, those rubber pads look like they're in stupid positions because they would be where the screen is when closed. But since the lid on Elitebooks are tested to withstand up to 1000lbs (435kg) weight, I guess HP knows what they're doing.
>>

At least your hands don't touch them when you type, I think it's a worst case scenario measure, in case you step on it or something like that.
Otherwise there's a rubber seal around the edge of the screen instead of individual pads.

13" Macbook Pro Retina 256GB SSD/8GB RAM/Core i5 Haswell with Iris Graphics

>things I like about it
-16:10 IPS display
-Large multitouch trackpad
-fast SSD (tested around 700MB/s last time I checked)
-OSX is really nice to use
-thin and Relatively light

>things I don't like about it
-soldered ram, proprietary storage
-less ports and expansion than non-Retina MBP for muh thinness
-along the 'muh thinness' train, the display and top clamshell is one piece. If you fuck up your display be ready to spend $500+ for a replacement that would be less than $100 on any business laptop
-aluminum shell shows up imperfections easily
-vents heat onto the bottom of the glued together display assembly
-by default CPU will heat up and throttle before increasing the fan RPM
-if you're sitting facing a bright light source (like the sun), light will shine through the apple logo on the back of the display putting an apple-shaped brightspot right in the middle of the screen.

My list of dislikes is longer than the list of likes, but I really do love my rMBP for my use case. I may upgrade to a 15 if I like the new Macbooks when Apple finally releases them.

If you want new, the Asus EA200 is the best for under £200, there's no upgradable RAM or SSD but the battery life is insane.

13 hours battery life
microSD card slot for extra storage
11" 1366x768 display
Intel Atom x5-Z8300 with 2GB RAM
Decent graphics with hardware decode for almost every video codec under the sun.

Can anyone recommend a good laptop for mainly internet browsing in bed?

>I don't give a shit about battery life since I'll always be plugged in
>I don't give a shit about performance since all I ever do is browse the web
>I need a backlit keyboard for late night posting
>Needs a decent 15'' or larger screen (at least FHD)
>Lightweight is preferred, but cool running is a must as it's normally sitting on me or on covers which block fans and trap heat

Basically I want a cool and quiet laptop with a backlit keyboard, and a good screen and speakers that sacrifices performance and battery life to get that in as inexpensive a format possible.

My current laptop is a HP envy dv6-7214nr and it's really hot and it's got so much flex that I've broken the screen just by picking the laptop up by the corner with one hand while it was closed, and I've jammed the fan by picking it up with one hand while open. It has the zero battery life thing down, but it's heavy as shit so I think I need something else.

Ideally I would just get a super light screen + keyboard that's in laptop form but has no guts and just connect it to my desktop computer with an HDMI cable but that product doesn't exist from what I can see.
>>

15.6" Ips 1920x1080p Display, i7-5700hq, GTX 970m with 3gb Vram, 16gb DDR3 ram, 128gb ssd, 1 TB hdd at 7200.

What I love most is probably the keyboard, very good spacing and travel. Really pleasing to type on.

Paid 1200$ for it.

Only thing I probably don't like about it is its loaded with more things that I don't need. Some MSI bloatware thay was ok to get rid of what I didn't want and the stupid Norton crap, cd drive but I suppose it's nice to have I guess. While it has nice speakers the placement on the front basically shunts it down to the desk when used on a raised stand.

I have the newest one - the 9350 (see the processor I listed in my original post).

Go on r/dell and you will see that the coil whine and touchpad are still issues. Just a roll of the dice if you have them or not, some don't. I bought mine a few weeks ago so it's still happening obviously.

As for the wifi, it comes with broadcom wifi that many choose to replace with an intel one for $20 or so. Personally I haven't had an issue with it as of now, so I probably won't replace it if I don't have to.

Even if you get it factory refurbished you may just need to restore factory settings yourself and reinstall 10 and all the drivers.

If you buy new, issues out of the box are very rare and they seem to run great. I can't mention enough how nice this keyboard is. And the backlighting is nice in that as well all functions of keys and alt functions are clearly lit as well. So at night youll be able to tell say what button turns on/off the trackpad, etc.

Easily the best bang for your buck computer I've owned. It's thicc and battery life is about 5 hours even with a gigantic 9 cell, but the footprint is still small and I don't really care about thinness.

I use a GTX 660 via eGPU as well, so it's great as a desktop along with as a portable shitposter/note taker. I don't see myself upgrading for a long time (until the 2610QM starts lagging way behind in games) but I'm contemplating a tiny Chromebook Flip to bring around on the go. Android apps make it bretty good for $150ish.

Dell Latitude E6420

It was cheap used and is lightning fast for buisness work. GPU OC'd real easily, it powers the high resolution that fits the screen well. It is dockable and has many ports and expansion options.

However, the keyboard is nothing like the older Dell laptops. It jams and gets a lot of dirt in it too often. Like most laptops, the battery life is aweful, a brand new battery lasts only 1.5-6 hours at most, unless you pay 300 for the two extra expansion batteries that weigh down your laptop dramatically. The touchpad is generally too small, so you have to lug around a mouse and pad with it. Finally, the GPU is a shitty Quadro that runs way too hot for its poor performance, and needs to be OC'd for full potentiel.

And the absolute fucking worst part of this laptop is the RAM. See, all of these other problems can be overcome with solutions like a external mouse and keyboard, more batteries, or even a eGPU. But the RAM in this machine has a pathetic cap of 8 GB ddr3 1600. So in the future when I need 16 GB of faster RAM, I'll need to buy a whole new laptop, when I'm happy with most of my computer. Due to the RAM cap I can't make this into a server, even with my powerful i7.

With all that aside, I still love this laptop. I usually use it plugged in with an external mouse, so the only problem I personally experience is the GPU when experiencing gaymen. However when the RAM limit starts affectjng me I'll have to replace and use this laptop fir LAN parties or a backup if a new one breaks. Although the price to performance of this laptop is outstanding, I would not reccomend it because most people will not enjoy the battery life problems, and the RAM will soon be outdated.

I used that laptop, its shit without spending cash for extra RAM and an SSD, and by then you could buy a much better laptop for the same money.
I can confirm its weight and I don't really care about it, but I will say it is the hottest laptop I've ever used. If you buy the version with an Nvidia Quadro NVS 135 (Which you have to because the Intel Crestline model is too slow to use) runs so hot that it will literally fucking melt (not joking, this happened to me) if you do not keep all venalation spots cool and uncovered at every second. Heck, when this laptop was released they had to recall it because so many CAD and buisness companies complained of them breaking so easily. And the GPU itself is shit, having a Passmark score of fucking 34 (for comparison, the Geforce GTX 650 has a score of 1953) and a measly 128 MB of VRAM. At one point it could run TF2 at 30 fps minimum settings 480p, but if I remember after a few of the 2015 updates it struggled to get past 10 FPS. So forget running any new or modern games on it. Works well for N64 Emulation and emulation older though.

I finally bought a new laptop after Win 7 began to crash randomly out, go really slow, and usually refuse to connect to the internet. I pulled my SSD out of it and put it in this computer
>>55882263
I reloaded Win 7 on a 250 GB Seagate HDD and was going to sell it, but realized it would be cruel to trick someone into buying it.

That's a lot of money, friendo
Though I'm considering one of these
>>

Microsoft has crosspatent share with Apple so they're the only other company allowed to use magnetic chargers, trackpad patents and all that fluff on a laptop.
They really hit a home run with the Surface series.
>>
>>55891954
Why can't other laptop manufactors rent the trackpad patents? Magnetic stuff is a meme but the state of other Windows trackpads is pretty disastrous. A company like Lenovo, Dell or HP should have no issues with the cost.
>>
>>55892295
>Why can't other laptop manufactors rent the trackpad patents?
Because Apple are a bunch of cunts.

Also some laptops come with Windows Precision Trackpads which is basically the same stuff they use on the Surface. Mobiletechreview is a good review site that shows if a laptop has one or not.

But yeah, I think the Surface trackpad is a tad bit better, it has lower input lag and I just don't like the new Force Touch Apple touchpads.

>some laptops come with Windows Precision Trackpads
Most Dells I think, though it's "decent" at best.

Surface 4 sure sounds nice, MS did so much right, it should be interesting to see how they going to improve it, though I still have a hard time spending so much on "close enough but not a real laptop".

>I just don't like the new Force Touch Apple touchpads.
Why not? The only difference I picked up so far was that they feel slightly more solid and you can leftclick from any part of it. Also it's funny to see the difference disabling the click sound makes.
>>
>>55892462
Hmm, looks like Windows Precision is just marketing fluff then, since Synaptics still builds the trackpads for Dell. They're fucking horrible, you press to click and the mouse still moves in the process.

Force touch is nice, but the click isn't as satisfying as the physical click on the older diverboard pads. It's also too easy to activate force touch gestures even on the firm setting.

Overall: 8/10 would buy Lenovo Laptops again. No superfishes in Linux anyway.

Honestly I have never used a trackpad I truly liked. That includes Apples offerings as well. I believe a proper mouse will always be superior
>>
>>55863867

I have an HP 14 (2014) that runs great. I have my desktop for gaming and windows stuff. It can keep up with my browsing habits (having ~50 tabs open all the time, sometimes more) and while I have ubuntu also installed I haven't yet found myself in a situation where I've HAD to use it for anything.
>>
>>55892512
>Synaptics still builds the trackpads for Dell.
Eww. I had a HP laptop with a Synaptics trackpad and that shit was nightmare inducing. Although later MS at least made it useable with whatever tweaks they did in Win 8/10.

>It's also too easy to activate force touch gestures even on the firm setting.
Heh, it feels just the opposite for me. Always found the force needed for force touch too strong to make it intuitive enough. Although even if it were more intuitive, I still fail to see the point beyond previewing pages.

>>55892606
That how I viewed it for years too, now I rather use a trackpad than any mouse. Even simple stuff like scrolling feels a lot more direct; besides it's nice not having to move your hands too far from the keyboard. Although depends on what one does of course.
>>
>>55892795
>Eww
Really? Every laptop I've ever used that had a Synaptics trackpad was great. I'm pretty sure they even make Apple's, and they're basically the best trackpads there are.

Does anyone know where to find a cheap mac at? I heard they were overpriced but I didn't know the extent until I went to their site and saw the shitty specs on their $1000+ laptops, its ridiculous.
>>

Good luck, Macs sell high new or used, you've got to look or get lucky to find a cheap one. I'd just watch eBay and Craigslist and hope something pops up

HP Pavilion 15, not sure which one in the series it is. Looks like pic related.

> Pros
+ Sturdy, screen hinges have suffered through a lot of stress and are still fine
+ Can run low/medium load games with decent FPS
+ Looks sleek
+ Track pad works fine
+ No touchscreen :)
+ Good at browsing the World Wide Web

> Cons
- Shitty battery life (1-2 hours)
- Fingerprint magnet
- Kind of heavy and clunky (5lbs)
- Speaker isn't that loud
- Can't multitask well if running a medium load game like CS:GO
- Shit resolution
- Gets hot easily
- Pre-installed with Windows 8

I don't really regret buying it but I definitely could of bought a better PC. The specs were fine in my case since I don't game much but you can get much lighter PCs than this with even better specs, like the HP 15-ay013nr. The HP 15-ay013nr is a pound lighter while still being the same size and has an even better resolution (full HD). It does have dual-core instead of quad-core but it exceeds everywhere else.

>HP DV5 1040eb (7.5 years old)

paid €500 for this thing back in early 2009. for its price and time it featured a pretty damn good processor (p8400) and also a bluray drive. also really love the clicky keyboard.

in its lifetime it has seen some changes: switched to ssd, got rid of the optical drive and installed hdd caddy. also had to replace the battery and charger. last year it was running extremely hot so i pried that motherfucker open (this series is notorious for being an engineering nightmare. sup heat sink blocking the fan exhaust. sup having to remove THE FUCKING SCREEN AND KEYBOARD to get to the heat sink), and i replaced the cooling paste. this helped for a couple of months but it's back to being a jet engine. i also disconnected the obnoxious amounts of leds which would burn my eyeballs at night

i love you dv5 but you are one heavy, scorching piece of shit in 2016 and you'll be getting replaced because you're struggling with multitasking and you've fried my nuts too many times

I've read like first 80-90 posts

but, are there any laptops in price like $300-400 that /g/ recommends, durability, maintenance, service etc wise?(I'm currently researching)

Indian so t420 costs like $250 but I am not particularly sure about buying from my fellow citizens, so can't get that.

You'd sit closer to a 17 inch screen than to a 24 inch screen.

Anything below 1920x1080 is outdated nowadays. Once you get a high res screen, 768p looks pixelated as hell.

I'm going to get an Acer C740 to run GalliumOS on. I want to keep it below 300€ and SSD instead of emmc memory is a must. Is there a superior choice to the c740? i spent quite some time researching but maybe i'm missing something.
