Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I switched to Linux but I still use a @outlook email address, anyone knows any good email provider who takes privacy seriously?

I've found this one, they seem legit: https://www.hushmail.com/
>>
>>55860336
When people say "OMG I looked at BSD's code and I looked back at Linux, I never want to go back to Linux, it's so professionally written." what do they mean? Like what is different really?
>>
What do you think are the distros with the most support when it comes to packages, documentation, etc?
>>
We full shitposting now aren't we.
>>

cock.li

but seriously though, a security researcher looked into whether using a secure email provider matters, and he found that:

even if you use a email provider like hushmail, over 80% of your mail will be on google's servers. gmail is so ubiquitous among people and corporations that you CANNOT escape the gmail system.

unless you only email your friends who also use non-gmail email providers, it's a pointless endeavor to not use gmail. they have most of your emails, whether you like it or not
>>
>>55860425
Fedora is backed by RedHat and they have a pretty good support.

Ubuntu is backed by Canonical and it has a great support too.

Arch is developed to remove autists from the society and cause if that they have a great support too. You wouldn't want them on the street, don't you?
>>
>>55860425
I think that the documentation and support for packages are provided by whoever is actually developing the package that is compiled.

On packaging side, Arch is not bad at all. Forget about the memes you've heard so far, it does not break as often as people say and their packagers are actually responsive and solve problems if reported. And there is Arch Wiki.
>>
>>55860389
Protonmail is relatively secure. I prefer it because it doesn't give you some shady ass @hushmail or @ghostmail address. They just make it sound like your trying to hide something with those names. @protonmail sounds professional enough to use in any situation.
>>
It's just Linux

Stop shilling your communist organization. Their place in modern Linux is of minimal importance. If you wrote the names of the major groups in order of importance to a functional OS, it would be Linux/Freedesktop/Redhat/Everyone else/GNU.

inb4 you can't call it an OS if it doesn't have some UNIX garbage that's not even UNIXy
>>
Few questions from a new user, if anyone can help :

- Can you use th search function in KDE/Ubuntu to search through every files of every hard drive I have? It only search for apps apparently.
If not, is there an app I could use for bigger searches?

- Is it possible to make the Windows/Super key activate the KDE menu?

- Is there a way to switch a window to a second screen on Ubuntu, using a shortcut?
I used Actul multiple monitors on Windows but it seems there's no equivalent?
>>
>>55860634
I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!
>>
>>55860669
>as defined by POSIX

GNU with Linux isn't POSIX compliant. It's barely POSIX compatible.

What should I do about a firewall or anti virus?

About to make the switch to Linux. Thinking about a minimal distro like Debian or Arch.

Was wondering, though. I've read on /g/ that I can run a lot older hardware on Linux and it will remain snappy. All I do is shitpost and program. Nothing really that intensive.

I was wondering if I should update to an old i5 thinkpad or hold onto my old core2duo memebook and upgrade the ram and SSD. On OSX my machine is fucking sluggish and at times nearly unusable during 30 second long hiccups. Should I upgrade or will upgrading/clearning up my laptop with linux be all that I really need?

Thanks.

Read the docs. It's GNU software, so don't expect it to be simple and easy to use for a use case simpler than the big list of "what if the user wants to..."s GNU goes down when making literally anything. Consider lilo if you don't have enough time to learn GNU's overpowered ENTERPRISE tier operating sys....bootloader.

I'm not using a GTK theme. i3 is configured through it's own config file and Xresources. Unless I'm missing something. I was looking at some configs and learned how to disable them per app through Xresources, but it's sloppy and I know there's another way. I just can't find it.

I want a clean install of Xubuntu, how should I proceed?

Delete every partition and make one big partition of ext4?

I don't care about the Winshit loader.

I wrote this copypasta for Debian installs, but it should apply for Ubuntu as well.

Any critique is appreciated:

>If you want to get rid of Windows and only have GNU/Linux on your computer:

This is my personal way of doing it, but by no means "the right way"

During install, choose to manually partition your drive

Select your device (sda) and clear the partition table (this deletes all active partitions)

Make these partitions:
On your SSD
-100 MB EFI System Partition (if you're on UEFI)
-100 MB /boot partition with ext2 file system
-The rest of the free space on the SSD is assigned to an LVM physical volume

On your HDD
-Literally all of the free space on a single ext4 partition, which you can mount in a directory called /data or in /media/whatever, your choice

Proceed to configure LVM

-Create a volume group based on your LVM physical volume that you chose earlier. Name it myVG or whatever
-Create three logical volumes in said volume group
-30 GB volume for / (root) (name it myRoot or whatever)
-4GB or 8GB volume for swap (depends on how much RAM you have. some people prefer to not have a swap partition at all and just make it a file, that's fine too) (name it mySwap or whatever)
-the rest of free GB goes to /home (again, myHome or whatever)

Finish configuration of LVM

-When back on the partition screen, mark your 30 GB Logical Volume as / (root) and ext4 file system
-mark your swap LV as swap
-mark your /home LV as /home and ext4 filesystem

Continue with installation
When it's done, make "Documents", "Downloads", "Pictures", "Videos", etc folders in your /data (HDD) partition and symbolic link them to your /home ones, so stuff in those gets saved to your HDD and not your SSD.

Ta-da

Oh, and if you want to encrypt your system, it just takes one extra step. Mark your free space in the SSD as crypto, not as LVM, configure LVM on LUKS, and also encrypt your HDD if you want. Done
>>
>>55868740
>>55868642
and since the copypasta was for an SSD/HDD setup, just apply the SSD bit in your case since you only have a hard drive. And boom, you're done. You don't have to do the symbolic links bit.

So, are there any things a new installation should do right away, other than to get latest updates?

Optimizing the performance by disabling some stuff probably wouldn't hurt.
>>
>>55869117
Well first things first, install these on your Firefox:
>HTTPS Everywhere
>Ublock Origin

Check if ufw is enabled by typing sudo ufw status in your terminal. You may determine extra rules for it if you want. (Uncomplicated Firewall, it's a front-end to iptables and installed on Ubuntu by default I think)

Go through your Xfce settings and set your preferences. I don't use Xfce as I don't like it, but you'll probably find most of the things you need in the GUI menus there.

If you were looking for extremely lightweight, you should've really gone for Lubuntu since it uses LXDE, which is lighter than Xfce, but Xubuntu is alright on old hardware too
>>

I was going to install Gentoo/Funtoo but am doubting whether or not all the compiling will even make a difference on relatively new hardware.

I have a Sandy Bridge mobile processor. Why does this specific architecture benefit from march=native?

Anyway, assuming I decide not to use a source-based distribution what other decent Arch alternatives are there? The only thing that attracts me to arch is the cutting-edginess and the large community. I don't want a meme distro with a dozen users.

You mean testing.

Unstable doesn't have a security repo, the main package maintainers also include security fixes in the main repo

The "delayed security" of max a few days really shouldn't be a concern for a home testing user. And if security is that big of a priority, like you said, can't go wrong with stable. Unstable would be for developers who like bleeding edge with a safety net.

Hey I've used Linux before but I am going to travel overseas soon for slightly over a month, and I accidentally ruined my W7 install beyond repair.

I bought the T430 very recently, am plan on making it my main machine, I just need to pick an OS. I am certainly interested in learning more about linux and all, but as my time is running short I need to have it set up and ready for full usage once I leave on my little trip.

Should I install Ubuntu 16.04 or Lubuntu 16.04? I need the easiest experience, I don't care that it is a noob distro.

Also, is Ubuntu truly secure with Amazon disabled? I mean, does that switch actually disable the spyware, or is it like windows 10 where you can "disable" telemetry but it doesn't actually turn it off or anything.

Disregard UEFI when you have the option.
UEFI is broken as fuck, it was meant as a BIOS with built in bootloader and nobody implemented it correctly. Stay with BIOS as long as you can.
Its stable as fuck. Never change a running system etc.

Why don't FGLT recommend OpenSuse or Korora, OpenSuse has something similar to the AUR which also let's you package stuff for other distros and Yast is godtier to learn into sysadmin.

Korora basically is what LinuxMint and Manjaro are to Ubuntu and Arch, but with developing board actually having a security advisory (lead dev is an ex military netsec).

You can get much better functionality using a Ubuntu Vagrant over Windows. the only reason I'm hesitant about Ubuntu is because of Amazon

I used ubuntu a while ago, before they implemented it. then I returned to windows.
I want to go back to Ubuntu as its easy mode, and my windows install just got fucked on my daily driver laptop.

I'm on my throwaway windows pc right now.

When I get around to doing a clean install of Debian will I need to worry about the BIOS or anything?
I'll be replacing Windows entirely.

you might be worried about having ancient packages, though, if you're installing debian stable.

I'm new to "productivity" in general. What DE/WM should I use for maximum productivity but still looks nice?

I'm running Void by the way.

I am attempting to install Fedora.

However, I am retarded.

My first question is, when I am in my BIOS screen to select where to boot from, I see my USB with the live image twice: once with its name and once with "UEFI" at the front.

Which one should I boot from? Is there really a difference?
