Aether is a peer to peer communication protocal (+ client). Wonderful. Unfortunately, Aether's development appears to have stalled in a non-functional state.

Any alternatives (other than Usenet).

I don't know if you were here two or so years ago but To was shilled here quite often back then. I don't know what happened to it then now. I just recall people were butthurt with the licence change to LGPL
