IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Just ordered a T420 last night. The only issue I can see is that it comes with Windows 10, which I don't have a physical copy of. Is it going to be fine if I just manually remove all the bloatware, or should I find a copy of 10 and do a clean reinstall? Does MS have a thing for that if you have a key but no physical disc?

Why is the T460p I want like 700 euros more expensive than in the US? ($1000 in US, vs 1600 euro here in Europe).

I tried a virtual mailbox, but Lenovo won't ship to them.

Any other way I can buy a T460p for a reasonable price?

Posting this in case some Thinkpad owners can give me a hand.

>Buy a T530 Thinkpad on Ebay with no battery included
>Buy a separate "genuine lenovo 9 cell" battery ($22) on Ebay
>Turn on laptop, Win8 interface tells me the battery is "plugged in, not charging", and stuck on 7%.
>Occasionally it flashes and says "plugged in, charging" for a millisecond but then it goes back to "not charging".
>Boot into Linux, the battery is "charging" but stuck on 6%

>Search the web for solutions
>Successfully boot up computer without battery
>Uninstall all adapter drivers and battery drivers in win8 Device Manager
>Nothing works

>Go into Control Panel... Devices and Printers... [Computer Name]... Properties... Hardware
>In the list of devices, "Lenovo PM Device" (probably power management) is broken
>"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete"
Maybe that's the problem.

Wat do /g/? Any other ideas?
If not, should I return the whole laptop or just the battery, or any tips to avoid this stuff in the future.

If you bought the battery used with no screenshots of designed/charged capacity and cycle count, it may just be fucked.

If it's a battery for a '20 series it won't charge without flashing the battery auth hack for the embedded controller.

It's possible, but unlikely, that the mobo charge circuitry is fucked.

I saw in the guide that the price on a T520 could vary quite a bit. I'm looking at one for 364 usd. It has 8gigs of ram, a 500GB hd, intel 3000 hd graphics and an i7-2620M 2,7 GHz.
Would it be worth a buy?

Otherwise I'm also looking at a T440s for 467 dollars, 8gigs of ram, an i5 and and an 180gb ssd. Both used.
I'm leaning towards the T440s at the moment, but what does /g/ think? I intend to use it for schoolwork and surfing.

anyone know how to unfuck my x220 running arch linux?

I tried installing steam and in the process also installed xf86-video-intel which is the open source intel graphics driver.

Prior to doing all this I would boot into X with maybe 100-120 MiB of Ram usage.
Now after installing this driver I am booting into X with 350 MiB. free -m tells me ~120 is used and with another ~150 in buff/cache.
I was thinking it has to do with the x220 HD 3000 integrated graphics using a portion however even after uninstalling the driver I have the same higher ram usage.

Yes, an R7 240. I've heard there are more powerful options that the dock can use, but this one was sure to work.

>Is your T601F machine at home powerful enough for hi10p animu?
No idea, not autistic enough about chinese cartoons for that. I've never noticed it having difficulties with playing 1080p video, even on the integrated. It gets hot as hell, but playback is smooth. I'm just a VLC pleb though, it might not play so well with your mpv and madvr or what have you.

>Streaming 1080p60 content? Anything it's kinda slow at doing?
It struggles noticeably with 1080p webms in the browser. Using an external player works fine, though. For day to day tasks, it performs just fine. There are some games that are simply not playable on such a weak dualcore processor, though. Don't expect to run any recent AAA games or anything of the sort. I've noticed in particular games that use Havok physics are completely unplayable, even at the lowest possible resolutions and settings.

>>
>>55848792

Windows 10 on a T420 is not as powerful as a T420 on Windows 7. You have more granular control over the system using Windows 7.

And by extension, Lenovo does not officially support Windows 10 on the T420.
>>
>>55856004
>Will the sandy bridge processors be powerful enough for my needs?
Of course.

>t420 or x220t
Depends of your needs really. I'd pick the t420 because of three drives and upgradeable cpu but the screen has shit viewing angles.
>>
>>55856109
my only concern about the x220 is the size, I've always had a desktop, so I don't really know how comfortable it will be.
On the other hand it has an ips panel, I cannot go back to tn panels anymore.

Whichever I get it will be used mostly at home conected to a monitor and for storage I have a home server.
So I don't really know what to get.

Also get a docking station and it'll be the best of both worlds using it as a desktop and as a portable machine.

if you have ATT then 192.168.1.254 for default gateway.

What is the best looking screen on a T530?

Nothing to post. Not so much flex, but movement when moved back and forth in the middle, but solid on the sides. Little bit of space at the top of the screen when bent back. enough to slide a couple fingernails in.

I'm posting from a non-tablet X40.
It plays 720p youtube vids very well, yet only with a few specific changes. I use puppy linux (which takes care of what was likely the hard drive as a transfer bottleneck). I can play them either in firefox, or downloaded via youtube-dl, they play fine in either vlc, mplayer or mpv.

But it's true as anons stated that using the standard hard drive with any hard-drive installed operating system, you will fail to play 720p properly due to choppiness.

A few other OS's that I've tested that work very well are slitaz, slax and antix.

Using hosts based ad blocking is more CPU efficient as it doesn't require running a blocking script for each of your browser tabs. The requests for ads just fail.

https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts

>>55861310
My recollection of using X40 was that 720p was playable from the HDD with a discrete player. Running flash video player was out of the question. I last used it in 2008 or so though.

You could build a youtube-dl script that downloads the content you want on highest playable resolution and launches a player.

How is driver support for win10 on the 420s? Computers at work have updated to it so I need a platform that will give the same instrumentation control headaches (as opposed to internal ones) for fiddling with some of our code while commuting or at home and. I had made the mistake of buying a U410 years ago and that's been a joke in handling win10 (had it relegated to the windows headache machine).

>>
>>55863193
AFAIK the discrete graphics isn't too great on T420.

You could try a T430. The iGPU gets 50-80% better performance than on T420 and you get a 3rd generation core CPU.

its a t420 with an i7, 4GB ram and 160GB HDD.

the case looks pretty beat up though.

should i talk him down and just replace the case and add as SSD?

Where do you fellas get your chargers for a reasonable price?
eChink sold me a charger advertising it as "Genuine OEM" which worked fine for a few weeks, followed by it making explosive sparking noises and not charging the unit at all now. I don't want to trust eBay sellers, unless you guys know a reputable seller/elsewhere other than ebay.

why is the T420 recommended when the T430 performs better and supports the classic keyboard?
>>

>>

>>
>>55869094
Doesn't the classic keyboard have some buttons that don't work if used with a T430?

Does this apply to the X220 and X230?

>>

>>55870015
T420 and X220 are recommended only because of the better default keyboard layout. If you don't care about the layout you should just get T430/X230.

There are some good reasons to consider T430/X230 though. Maybe you want 50-80% better iGPU performance or the lower power requirement of Ivy Bridge platform. You can even get a xx20 keyboard if you want but you'll have to reflash the EC.

I like how Lenovo reintroduced IPS panels, though some TP enthusiast think some panels are subpar of the IBM ones (Dell & HP never discontinued their beautiful IPS panels).

I had two T440p models, it's a mixed bag for me, like the battery life, dislike he serviceability. Removing the keyboard is harder, especially if the keyboard is grimey (unlike having screws from the bottom, the screws are hidden by the 'island' keys now, the small cover needs to be slid out and unscrewed)

I tried one to game on and it sucked, but I did some video editing and it was decent for the Intel HD4600 (in comparison from gaming or rendering vids on my W700ds)

Build wise they are OK. Not hella robust but new design isn't that shit

The tradeoff on the T520 compared to the T420 is the size, but you can get non-shit displays.
Plus W520's seem to get pretty pricey, imo the tradeoff for the graphics isn't worth it.

Eventually, when everyone else is using tablets, it'll be acceptable to us any sort of laptop.

I'm not so autistic about the thinkpad brand, but what I want in a laptop is durability, design, and features.
The newer models are shittier looking, have a poorer keyboard, and no optical drive.
I'm not trying to troll or anything, I'm genuinely concerned. You can't use the same thing forever, thinkpad or not. Eventually we will run out of replacement parts - then what?

I just hope the future for laptops and portables isn't too shitty or tablet oriented.
