I asked this earlier but didn't really flesh it out.

I'm going to be moving into an apartment soon (student living) and need a vacuum cleaner for the carpet. However, I don't trust the cleanliness of your average college student, so I'm considering getting a carpet cleaner.

I don't want to keep both a carpet cleaner and a dry vacuum cleaner (or spend the money on both), so I was wondering if it was viable to keep just the carpet cleaner.

pic related
>>
>>55849529
Overkill. Just rent a carpet cleaner when you move in
>>
>>55849529

You can rent a carpet cleaner from most hardware stores for around $30-40 for the day and it'll do a lot better job than that unit you posted will.

Is there any way to get a replacement battery for an Xperia phone without paying Sony shitloads to replace it?
>>
>>55849605
>>55849657

Thanks for the input guys.

I'm aware of the rental option - I used to do that back at home, until we bought a Rug Doctor to own. I was just thinking that if I used the non-rental machine even 3-4 times, it would pay for itself, compared to dropping $30-50 on a smaller vacuum on top of the rental. As for the performance, reading reviews and looking at videos shows that the cleaning capabilities are comparable to the rental units. Ultimately, I won't actually spend anything until I see the condition of the apartment.

What's the most painless way to switch my PC from an AMD processor to an Intel one?

As in, what will happen with my drivers, programs, Windows installation, etc, when I change my motherboard, CPU, and RAM, but leave everything else in? (going from 8350 to 6700k, if you're curious)

Last time I did this, it was AMD > AMD and my PC acted almost like nothing ever happened, aside from being faster. I have a sneaking suspicion it won't be so easy this go around.

Just set the correct identifier, like iMac14,1 for Haswell without dedicated GPU and forget about it.

I think it's about setting clock speeds and the various states your CPU can be in (C0, S4, S5) for sleep, hibernate and all that shit.

Don't manually dick around to be honest, just set a correct identifier instead.
>>
>>55851889
Nvidia makes their own GPUs, 3rd parties make the cards that the GPUs go on. It's the equivalent of having an Intel CPU with an MSI motherboard.
>>
>>55851889
Intel makes processors, yes. Nvidia/AMD only makes the processor part of the GPU, and they hand off the processors to various manufacturers to make the PCB and cooling unit.

Nvida and amd DO make their own cards, they just suck. Basically every 3rd party version is an improvement. They put out the blueprints for cards the way intel does with mobos.

>>55851912
I'm pretty sure you're wrong about nvidia/amd physically producing any part of the card themselves
>>
>>55851889

Radeon is AMDs designation for GPUs, similar to the way NVIDIA has GeForce for their GPUs.

NVIDIA and AMD make the GPUs, then companies like Gigabyte, Zotac, ASUS, etc etc, buy the GPUs and then build the boards and cooling systems for those GPUs and sell them.
>>

>>

Depend's on who you're asking and what generation. Specific models with specific manufacturers can be better or worse or more likely to have defects. MSI is pretty solid, and evga is usually decent for nvidia

Honestly, there is truth to >>55852262

Right now the big push for high-end TVs is 4K + HDR. You can get a 4K TV for like $500 USD without HDR, that's primarily because our TV broke and it was just a good time to make the jump. I've only played a couple of 4K youtube videos on there just to see what it looks like.

It might be worth while upgrading, however; if you're currently using a TV without LED backlighting and shit, but again, it's non-issue right now.
>>
>>55852215
Now is a good time to buy another 1080p tv. But since they're throwing 4k on a lot of the mid-tier tvs anyway it doesn't matter. Oled etc is probably outside of your price range but much more of a real impact unless you're in a small living room with a 60 inch

Windows Backup was always shit.

If you want offline target, I would use Acronis backup. It deduplicates, encrypts, compresses, to any target, without any problem.

Crashplan can also do offline targets.
But backups are pain, so I would just pay for Crashplan and backup there, because it does versioning, and you forget to backup anyway.

You can, simply use two pendrives and install the system on Pendrive B. I would also unplug the hard drives, because most Linux distros love to fuck up boot loaders and such.

Also:
- Boot is slow from these drives.
- Installation of packages won't be the fastest.
It also stresses the fuck out of your drive.

You can also have a "Persistent system", which modified the live system. Now... it's faster, but if you remove packages for example, your space won't get free'd up and so on.

Well you could put multiple partitions on a single usb if it was big enough, but I feel like you're barking up the wrong tree here.

What will probably happen is that the linux bootloader will supercede the windows one, which wouldn't be a problem as long as it kept the windows entry. And you could just repair windows if it didnt. Just don't choose to format any of your windows partitions during the install

What the fuck? Of course not. Linux won't do anything you don't tell it to do. If you open up a terminal and type “nuke my windows 8 boot loader” then yes, but why would you do that in this scenario?

In fact I don't even know why we have them.

The GTX880M, 980M pack more than enough punch. Now you can also buy GTX980 fitted laptops.

GPU was never the issue. CPU is.

- Turbo speeds are never "taken into account". No laptop can work 24-7 with turbo, and quiet speeds. It's not the norm, even though otherwise the CPU sucks speed wise.
- Performance/clock-speed is very far behind. My i7 tops at 2.4ghz, and even the most expensive ones barely reach 3.0ghz.

I don't use my computer as much as I feel like I'm wasting the end of its lifespan just sitting there on
>>
>>55857777
>end of its lifespan
Having your computer turned on and creating heat, and having your sdd/hdd spinning and using power, is a bigger waste of "lifespan".
Turn if off if you're not using it.
Make a server or some shit.
You're not waisting anythine.

My rig has been powered on for over 6 years, reboots yes, but its never been shut down once.

I built my PC a few days back and I installed some vidya to test the FPS I get.

On CS:GO I get constant 300 fps, but since I'm running a 60Hz monitor for the time being until my 144Hz comes next week, I'm wondering how can I get rid of the screen-tearing.

Is enabling VSync the only option I have?

Also, when I get my 144Hz monitor, can I disable VSync and cap my FPS to 300 again and then there wont be any screen-tearing at all?
>>
>>55857923
I know. that why I'm on /g/ :( Can you not think of anything that I could render while my computer idles?
>>
>>55857953
holy fuck you're retarded

fucking run 100 instances of the unity benchark

fucks sake
>>
>>55857946
You can enable vsync to eliminate the tearing
There will still be tearing if you disabled vsync at 144hz with 300 fps, but tearing isn't as noticeable at higher refresh rates

If you want to eliminate tearing without vsync get a variable refresh rate monitor

How can I get Flash to remember to disable hardware acceleration all the time? It always causes the plugin to crash and it seemss like it's constantly reverting every few days to use acceleration aain.

I already said that I want an end product. I don't just want to do stress tests. I want it to be something useful
>>

there is nothing
You dont have enough power to do anything usefull
>>
>>55857994
Variable refresh monitors are the GSYNC and FreeSync ones yeah?

I have a 980 Ti, would a FreeSync monitor work with that since AMD is somewhat open with their stuff, or is it locked down to AMD cards like GSYNC is with NVIDIA.
>>
>>55858032
G-sync is locked to nvidia and nvidia's refusal to support open standards means that freesync is locked to AMD
>>
>>55858031
I know my laptop is shit but I have loads of downtime so idc how long it takes to render as long as long as I can resume it somehow

For some reason, once my laptop goes to sleep and wakes up, no sound comes through my headphones. Everything says that sound is coming through - all of the audio settings recognise my headphones and that they're plugged in and functioning, but no sound comes through. I'm running Windows 8.1, and my only thought, unfortunately, is a fresh install, which I'd rather not do, because ugh, effort. I don't suppose anyone here has any ideas before I do that? I spent about two hours on it the other day and gave up before I got too frustrated. I've tried updating and rolling back drivers, trying different headphones, disabling and uninstalling other audio programs (like X-Fi Blaster), restarting the audio service, waking from sleep with the headphones plugged in, changing the default format, uninstalling the drivers completely and allowing the default ones to install upon restarting the computer, and there is nothing in the Event Manager upon waking from sleep to indicate something went wrong. The only way to fix it is a full shut down and restart.

Thoughts?

Why are you even sleeping your computer retard? If you want to stop having stupid problems then stop doing stupid shit.
>>
>>55858805
That's not an answer. What's wrong with putting the laptop to sleep? It's just closing the top.
>>
Is there any way to eject a external HDD? I use it to move large files between two computers, but there is no eject option in the right click menu

I usually put the computer to sleep and wait for the HDD to turn off

Sleeping is one option that can happen when you close the top
>>
>>55858892
Yeah, because it's faster than shutting down, and Hibernate causes its own issues. I just wondered if anyone had any ideas that I hadn't tried. While 'Hey, don't put your laptop to sleep!' is an answer, it's not really something that's applicable. Thanks anyway.

So i'm using the high performance config from the /mpv/ threads, but the terminal is giving me an error whenever I launch a video with it.

Here is the config I am using:
 vo=opengl-hq:interpolation:tscale=linear:scale=ewa_lanczossharp
video-sync=display-resample

and whenever I try opening a video with mpv I get this message:
 vo=opengl-hq:interpolation:tscale=linear:scale=ewa_lanczossharp
video-sync=display-resample

How do I get the linear scaler? the mpv version I'm using is the same as the latest release on guthub, which is 0.18.1.
>>
>>55858926
The second code box should be this:
Error parsing option tscale (option could not be parsed)
Option vo: Error while parsing opengl-hq parameter tscale (linear)
Error parsing option vo (option could not be parsed)
/home/USERNAME/.config/mpv/mpv.conf:1: setting option vo='opengl-hq:interpolation:tscale=linear:scale=ewa_lanczossharp' failed.

Sorry about that

What's the best method for transferring large amounts of data between two computers if online solutions aren't an option?

>What's the best method for transferring large amounts of data between two computers if online solutions aren't an option?
External hard drive

>And what's the best way to install an OS on a new computer if you lack a real disc?
Depends on the OS. Boot from ISO (file), chroot from a different system or boot via PXE.
