You know, coming to /g/ for tech advice seems like bad idea, but, why not?

I can't ping 8.8.8.8, I can only use the google alternate DNS 8.8.4.4, which is slow as balls.

Do you have any recommendations? It dies right before it reaches 8.8.8.8 on the traceroute.
