Building a new i7 skylake pc soon and think it would be funny to house it in an old shitty looking pc case. Does anyone know of any specific old pc's that use either ATX or microATX and not a weird proprietary format?
>>
>>55840410
Try looking for old Antec shit
>>
>>55840410
i got a MiniITX in this Compaq Presario 6000 series case, but it will take standard ATX as well
>>
>worrying about how a case looks.
Wew! It's not like proper cooling matters right? All them girls are gonna be wet seeing it!

Guise. Guise! I'd love to have a computer that runs XP where I can play muh old DOS gaems etc. A computer that doesn't need any cooling and therefore can use an old case.
>>
>>55840410
Fucking dell. These are quite solid cases. Admittedly the airflow is pretty shit but it would be perfect for putting a low wattage build together if it wasn't for the proprietary case.
>>
Get something like a Dell Optiplex 7010 case, that is what I have.

My specs are:

i5 3470
GTX 970
16GB of RAM
WD 1TB
WD 4TB
500W PSU

Honestly I would love to build a Skylake PC in a original Xbox case, or do something similar to what you are thinking.
>>
>>55840410
I sold my pc with a fucking olidata case for $800 when i got my ThinkPad.

Those olidata cases are everywhere.

Dunno took it from google images.

But i don't know how i sold my desktop for $800 when it had a similar case, looked "retro" enough i guess.

Look for 6579 netvistas, at least the one i got was mATX and could fit an ATX psu. You will need a 3,5 to 2,5 adaptor if you want to mount an SSD and be limited to 2 drives if you keep the floppy and one cd drive, you can still use the space of the second optical drive that is covered.

It can be better if you mod the I/O shield, and try to keep the old one style with the fancy colors layout.

Just remember to watercool it or make some sort of hidden ventilation because those shits get really hot.
>>
>>55841511
Jeez. Who would ever pay for that? What were the specs at least?

Why not a computer like these? A big, beige computer of THE DARK FUTURE!
>>
>>55841085
the vents under the USB ports work quite well. I've added some extra cooling with some fans i had laying around, and this thing never gets above 60C on the GPU, and 50C on the CPU side. As well, this is running Win10, but is only running an Athlon II X2 but getting an X3 sent in. 4 gigs of ram and a GeForece 630GT so i can game half-decently on it.
>>
>>55841642
Not him but nice. What are regular desktop usage temps?
>>
>>55841563
i7 4770k, gtx 970 and 8gb ram. It just happened.
>>
So what, you're gonna sit there, looking at your computer, chuckling to yourself?
>>
>>55841699
Woah the specs are not bad. I'm about to set up some "gaymen computers" with those flashy cases and sell it to some faggots.
>>
>>55841690
the CPU is 50C max, but usually for something like video playback its around 40C (i ONLY use the rig for gaming, i have other computers for other duties). the GPU has only gotten up to 66C at it's hottest. Im playing fallout 4 with it fine. A friend gave me this PC ages ago in it's previous incarnation as a P4, and i gutted it and another he had given me to use in a P4 Minecraft Potato build for my best friend's 6 year old who wanted Minecraft for Xmas but finances were tight. So with the empty case left, i had it sitting til i had an old eMachine 1352 dropped on my lap that had a dead PSU - i threw in a 680w that i had laying around, and when all was said and done, i have this build. im gonna double the ram (currently runing 4 gigs) and toss in a new GPU (tempted to get the RX470 8 gig) around Xmas, and maybe a card in the PCI-E 1x slot for another SATA port and a cpl of external USB 3.0 ports. Pic related, another view of the vent and fan i use to pipe in some air to keep it cool
>>
>>55841767
Not bad. If I were you I would throw in a HD series GPU like the HD 7950 instead.
>>
>>55841046
even prescotts only topped out at around 115 W for the shitty high-end models, most of them were 50-80W which are lower than Shitlake's max, or AMD's especially.
>>
>>55840410
HP Pavilion 750n. It's a shitty shit to work in, but it'll fit.

What are you doin son? You aren't over clocking those are you?
>>
>>55842775

HDDs don't eat shit, like 5 W at most for a modern one.
>>
using old cases is fucking retarded. you get some stupid ass shroud which most likely wont work with the new stock coolers. good luck fitting an aftermarket cooler half the time, and have fun with the terrible fucking cooling overall with 80mm fans if you are fucking lucky.

dont bother kid

Working on mine at the moment, made that grill where the old psu spot was today, preparing for painting now and settled on an intake fan on the bottom of the case w/ ssds mounted behind the mobo tray and a hdd.. somewhere..

Going to paint the chassis matte black and put sound deadening foam everywhere.
>>
>>55845439

oh and yes ive got an SFX modular psu on the way so it will be completely concealed within the 5.25" bays, and I've got a proper plug to mount at the rear of the case so the power extension cable isnt floating around, basically im just making one of those mitx power cable extenders.

What is that cardboard box doing there?

If wood is subjected to heat for longer times, it becomes super-dry and will be much more flammable than it already is. 11 November 2000 there was a fire in the Kaprun funicular. 155 died, only 12 survived.

The reason to the fire was that some lazy fucktard jury-rigged something with wood close to the electrical heater.

And cardboard is pretty much wood. But even worse, because its not as dense and has these fire-friendly "pipes".

So do yourself a favor and remove that death trap from the computer. There is a reason that computers are treated with fire-retardants, you know.
>>
Some Dell cases don't use standard front panel connectors.

So you would have to ghetto rig something.
>>
>>55840951
I remember talking to you before. You should really use your talents to make some money once your entire extended family has CS:GO potatoes.

One of these guys probably, found one in the trash and still have it around, never actually used it but some day I might.
>>
>>55845439
Go get a roll of butyl rubber flashing tape, and line that whole bitch with a couple layers of it. Semi permanent sound dampening without being a huge obstruction to what little airflow you have. Get the side panels and top of the chassis with at least 4 layers and you're in for some whisper quiet computing.

Also a 3470 and 970 don't consume much power at all.

I put modern components in my mom's prebuilt from 1999 or whatever, used to rock a Pentium 2 with 64GB RAM and Windows 98 I think.

This case was easy to handle, just a very basic ATX case without any weird modifications that OEMs used to do in 2005+.

I'm not sure about that particular Dell case. In university tech support I dealt with a few HP cases with Core Duos (from around 2008), they were a bit convoluted from the sliding HDD trays, cable management, motherboard upside down, etc. But they don't have any custom mainboard measurements from what I can tell, a micro ATX build would probably work fine
>>
>>55841348
had a free pc with this case. it's complete shit. everything is plastic and it's flimsy as shit. the drives won't open cause the eject button is weirdly placed on the side and the case can rotate on these round feet and i have no idea why... also the front lights up the glorius olidata logo :^D
>>
>>55841085
>A computer that doesn't need any cooling
go for modern-ish low end parts

30-40W dual core CPU with passive cooler, low end passive GPU (HD7750, or an older 5000/6000 generation)

passive PSUs are shit and expensive, so pick a good silent one with fan (BeQuiet, Corsair)

if you want to play just DOS games maybe an RPi with Dosbox/emulator will do
>>
>>55847163
Unless the temperature in his PC for some reason is getting to 400+ degrees Fahrenheit it's not gonna do shit.
>>
>>55847163
pretty much what >>55849695 said... the air comes in via that vent & ducting, it only pulls in air that comes in from the open, as well as i don't even smoke, and any wiring splices in my fan array are soldered and then taped over. Cardboard needs open flame and enough heat to combust - the internals of my PC don't get above 60C, fyi.
