GUYS GUYS

I know this is going to sound crazy but I own more headphones than probably all of you including the hd600/hd580 and k702/Q701.

Spoiler alert: neither is better than the other. They're both very good, effectively end-game for people not wanting to spend much more. Each has strengths and problems. They're side-grades to each other, neither is perfect and which you will like will entirely be up to your preferences.

I don't own the dt880 but have heard it and the treble was just too much. if you want something that isn't as soft and polite as the sennheiser just get an AKG. Don't own them though so I don't claim to have enough experience on dt880 to say for sure.

tl;dr - shills for both sides are retarded and 100% fueled by post-purchase (or even pre-purchase) rationalization and memes.

Thoughts?
>>
>>55841611
all the open ATH with the exception of the r70x have pretty severe bass rolloff, it's not unfair to call them nobass. if you're ok with that they're good buy you could just buy a 558/598.
>>
>>55841611
On this note id be interested if anyone had a idea if the difference in sound between the 500x/700x/900x. Not the guy who asked but looking now there is a 10$ difference between the 500x and 700x is there really any difference?
>>
>>55841611
I honestly think they are better than the AKG k240s but you should really just get the ATH-AD900x instead. Buy it nice or buy it twice.

Modular headphones, are they a meme?

I've had parts break on several headphones (most recently the right driver stopped working in my Sennheiser 518), and I'm liking the idea of being able to replace one specific part when it goes out instead of having to decide between sending it in for repair, replacing it, or risk fixing it myself.
>>
>>55843180
Dumb JoJo poster, simply avoid Sennheiser if you don't want to have build quality issues in the future.

I have been considering getting either the audio technica M50x or beyerdynamic DT770 80 ohm. After using the M50x though I don't like how lacking the bass is, would there be much of a difference in bass and mid range between the two, or which amp would really bring out the potential in either headset

First time attempting at getting good audio setup here,

Hi /hpg/,

I have a pair of Etymotic MK-5 earphones that I'm very happy with in terms of sound quality and, with the foam tips (pictured in plastic bag), the level of passive noise reduction. The problem is that the foam tips tend to last 6-8 weeks max before needing to be replaced. I don't mind buying the replacement tips, but shipping costs to continental Europe are just retarded.

What would you recommend as an alternative earphone? I use these exclusively while motorcycling, so they need to be in-ear, with good passive reduction of wind noise, and obviously sound quality should be decent.
>>
>>55848500
Well that didn't take long. The 650's are going back to amazon. I'm not going to get technical but the bass increase difference is tiny and the vocals sound much better on the 600. The 600's don't need to be any darker, they're already slightly warm as it is.

600's are king.

Buy different tips?
Westone Star (silicone) and True-Fit (foam), Shure black foam (also called Shure olives), or Comply T-100 and P-series. These all fit.

There isn't much else that fits the bill as far neutrality is concerned. The HF5 is less flat than MK5 stock, requires either EQ or the resistor adapter to flatten it out. The adapter will butcher the sensitivity.

Since we dont have a dedicated speaker general I guess this is the best place to ask this question.

Im about to buy a set of speakers for my tv and im wondering about which pair I should get.

Logitech 2.1: https://www.amazon.ca/Logitech-980-000402-Speaker-System-Z623/dp/B003VAHYTG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469988470&sr=8-1&keywords=logitech+2.1

I want these because they have built in amps with bass adjust (really important as I share a room and need to turn down bass during night).

Can someone highlight the differences between them? General audio quality, lows, mids, highs, ease of set up, etc. I already own the Logitech pair for my computer and I think they sound pretty good, I dont have anything to really benchmark them against unfortunately.

Im not an audiophile so take that into consideration please. Will mostly be playing games and watching movies on it.

I took a look at those (actually just before posting, the noise cancelling is nice), but there are quite a few issues with durability and sound and wasn't really sure if these issues were dramatic enough to impact the purchase

I mean it's not like the kid is gonna care that much about sound but if the thing breaks then that's an issue

A lot of people mention that the QC15 was a lot more durable, is the QC25 fragile enough to consider purchasing the qc15?

QC25/QC35 sound in ANC mode thoroughly outclasses the QC15 and most other closed headphones. ANC and EQ are some sort of anathema to audiophiles though.
Joints and headband are thinner than on the QC15, not that I've broken either.

Just got an hd 800S. My ears feel like they are suffocating with these things on. Maybe its my set up (o2/dac) but im getting listener fatigue like straight up as well. Now my ears are left with a piercing feeling and its kind of scaring me... Is this normal? This never happened with my 400i's. Maybe its just planers because it feels like there was some room for my ears to breath.
>>
>>55856005
It's discontinued and shot up in price 2-3x over its usual price after the Zeos review.
It's a bass light headphone with high bass roll off.

>>55856794
Pretty sure that fatigue is just the 6kHz treble peak.

Half-decent headphone+EQ+possible amp
So, I suppose AKG K702, any parametric EQ with 10 or more bands, and a Schiit Fulla, Fiio E10k, or whatever, it doesn't much matter.
>>
>>55856794
Pretty strange. The HE 400i has just as strong a treble spike in the 6-7k region and more energy at 10k than the HD800S, while the cups on the HD800/S are larger which should translate to more comfort, more room to breathe, so to speak.

I didn't add the sarcastic tell, after you asked for reasons not to buy it.
I despite the big midbass on the hd518/558/598 series, and it still kinda rolls off. I don't like listening to it without EQ.
Those are the cons anyway.

>>55856960
I would have suggested a software parametric EQ, especially if you were at a computer.
Windows users have EQAPO to affect all system audio, users of OSX/Mac OS and Linux will have to use audio plugins and figure out to chain them to the audio, if you want it to affect more than just one player.

>>55856919
NVX XPT100.
>>
>>55856960
I also forgot to mention a few other headphone suggestions.

Beyer DT 880, which has smaller pads, and the AKG K612, which is flatter than the 700 series headphones, but less sensitive. I suppose that is what the amplifier is for.

Pick them as price and whatever else dictates.

Lots of good things to it. Good linearity, highly stable frequency response with leak and position, well managed padding for comfort, and a solid construction (mostly). More than can be said for the other manufacturers"high-end".
The frequency response is more V-shaped than what I would prefer, but we can EQ that, and it's one the best EQ sets period.

The only things I can think of priced like that are the two Senn Orpheus systems and the Final Audio Design Muramasa. The Muramasa was more of a concept sculpture than a engineered headphone, the first Orpheus has some critical flaws to it.

I only really got into this "hobby" about two weeks ago and had the opportunity to audition some stuff: HD800, LCD 2, Ether and T1 in that order and I personally think that HD800 > Ether =/> LCD 2 > T1.
Countless times I've read about the HD800 6khz peak but it wasn't that bad, at least, not as bad as the ear grating T1 treble. Listening to the Ether and LCD 2 after the HD800 made a lot of my tracks sound "dead", for lack of a better term, which I can chalk up to the lower treble amount, while the T1 had too fucking much. T1 is unlistenable, Ether was _good_ nothing really stood out but nothing was wrong, LCD 2 is heavy and uncomfortable. Bar the T1, overall, they all gave a great listening experience. Really eye opening and I can kind of see why people spend hundreds if not thousands on gear.

All in all, I realised I have a preference for a slightly brighter signature. Next time I will try some of the more obtainable stuff like the HD600/K702/DT880/Hifiman's and pick up one of those.

Pretty good if you need headphones to take outside. Built like a tank and can withstand abuse, good sound although a bit bassy so make sure you're okay with that.
Fairly easy to find replacement parts too like cables and earpads, and can also use the Boompro mic to use as a gayming headset.
Pretty solid choice if you're looking for something you can easily mod, carry around every day and with a solid build.

I've also been thinking of upgrading my open-backs. Do you know a pair that would have a similar sound signature to the m100s i.e fun, bassy, loud, but slightly better? Alright /g/. I have a fiio e10 and ath-m50 on my windows pc. When I have the headphone dac/amp on low volume, and my pc set to 100% volume, I get static noise come through sometimes.

This goes away when I set my headphone dac/amp to high volume, and my pc to 5% volume. The problem with this is that some programs don't obey the windows mixer which results in my ears getting blasted by the sonic death of the universe.

My desk speakers don't have this issue, which are fed by the line out from my fiio e10 and have their own amp.

I have a feeling the amp in the e10 is not particularly great when operating at low amplification.

Anyone know a headphone amp that works well with ath-m50 at low levels of amplification?

SteelSeries Siberia v2 (ayylmao), AKG K403 for portable use (broken), Shure SRH440 (broken)

I've been looking at the AKG Q701's and tried them out at a local store, they're going for 199€ there. I liked them, liked to listen to them, sources I tried were the store's Marantz CD player and then I also tried it from my phone (HTC One M7). Maybe a bit thin-sounding, but lots and lots of detail, which I like.
Now, I got a friend overseas who also likes Hi-Fi and he's been rambling about the Philips Fidelio X2's. I've done the whole "read everything from everywhere" routine and seen a lot of opinions going both ways. Others say they're overhyped and not special at all, others swear by them and say they're the best bang for buck headphones for the price. Others say they're too heavy with the bass and that they recess the mids, others say that the mids are only slightly recessed but the cans are overall perfectly balanced and sound great with lot of detail and a fairly big soundstage.
I just don't know what to believe, and the AKG's are the only cans I've gotten to try myself. No store nearby carry the X2's. I also don't have any amp or DAC, which I've heard are mandatory for the AKG's if you want them to live up to their full potential.
The AKG's go for 199€, and the X2's I could get for about 180€ plus 9€ for shipping IIRC.
Anything you guys wanna say about those two, or have some better options?

Hey guys, I'm planning to start improving my PC audio quality, but i'm stuck, since i didn't recived a consistent feedback (mainly from already-given questions and answer).

Balanced

That said, my questions are:
>should i change on-board sound card?
>would Dac/Amp (one, or combo) makes any difference in this situation?
>should i change my headphone before any other change?

Keep in mind that i choose those headphones like 3 years ago because i wanted a balanced audio / open headphone, so i didn't picked them randomly (and yeah, I'm not planning to change them 'cause i like them).
I also know that HD598 are easy to drive, but well, does it means that changing, for example, my sound card would be an overkill?

Why hasn't anyone brought up this gem yet? Best noise isolation and bass in its price range

Because the MA 750s exist

It's overpriced and relatively sounds like shit. Muh isolation is the only good thing

Nah, i listen to mainly EDM, Disco and house music, and some SEB, it's the best bass IEM for that price in my opinion and its highly durable and replaceable.

Get a sound card or a dac/amp.

Audioegine d1, audio technica ath- asus xonar essence ST/X, o2/odac, schiit magni/modi, creative zxr, audio technica ath-ha40.

Any of those would be a good purchase. Buy what you can afford, and whatever has the connections you want. Go for optical if your motherboard has it, if not get a sound card.
>>

Exactly. Why would you buy something because everyone says it sounds good.

For the amount you're talking about spending, go out and actually fucking listen to some headphones.

I'm looking for two headphones.
One to use with my turntable, so long cable and comfy. I mostly have post-punk and jazz records.
Another one to use with my laptop and phone. Preferably on ear. I listen to a lot of techno and hip hop, so I think a bit bassy would be cool.

The O2 amplifier has some design flaws, but it does the bulk of parameters very well (low input distortion, decent voltage level) and some other parameters (extreme low noise, very low output impedance) better than almost all other amplifiers.
The big difference with the Benchmark HPA2 versus the O2 is that it has more current to power the insensitive and low impedance (<60 ohm) headphones.

>>55865219
>>55866527
Most of those have weak isolation. IM50 can work, although it's bit above the budget with bulky earpieces.

Thanks man, Amazon doesn't seem to show any results for the JRE or Boarseman and the E10's are a bit much.
Forgot to mention they'd ideally need a microphone too, since the one that comes with the PS4 is shite.
Any comparisons between the Piston 3, KZED9 and Rock Zircon's?

Also, potentially retarded question to do with pic related. Does the shape have any effect on sound leakage with earphones? Generally I prefer earphones with the shape on the right, though it's something I can live with either way.

That's because they are alle chink shit. You'd have to get them off GearBest or Ali. If you really want to buy from Amazon the Soundmagic E10 are your best bet, they are available as E10S with mic, too.
>Any comparisons between the Piston 3, KZED9 and Rock Zircon's?
Piston 3 are rather flatish, KZ ED9 depend on what tube/nozzle/whatever its called you use. It comes with a narrow and a flat one. Narrow has much more bass, flat one is literally flatter.
Zircons are bassy but not mud cannons.

Thanks again. I tend to avoid chink shit, the E10S's look good but they're just too pricey. Almost double the price of the Piston 3 or the Piston Hybrids.

Seems from what you say I can't really go wrong with buying any of the 3. I've been looking into the Piston Hybrid's just now, they don't seem bad.
The KZED9's are pretty cheap at £10, Zircon's are £16 and Hybrid is £20. Feel half tempted to go the route of more money = more better hurr, that and I quite liked the Pistons I had before
>>
>>55871796
Pistons are rather flatish, if you don't like or tolerate V-shaped or bassy headphones nor want other chink shit your best bet are the Piston 3.

Are you the one with the 990 and X2, and the other Chi-Fi in-ears?
That's like being worried about a tea brew being too hot while going skinny dipping in molten steel.
It has one-tenth of the bass that some of those in-ears have. It's closer to the X2/990 level.

I don't avoid chink shit in general, just the shit I'd have to get off AliExpress and can't really find on Amazon. The KZ ATE's look good to me too, but I need to look at them a bit more

There are multiple versions of the MDR-1A. The 1ADAC might be the flatter one, I think.
MSR7 has comfort issues. It's more strictly reference than anything else mentioned so far. Little bass rolloff, and local peak around 9-10kHz. Peak doesn't get past the rest of the mid and bass (it's a little recessed in treble really), but it irritates people.

Hey guys I am looking for some input as for a second pair of headphones. I want them to be portable, so I can bring them with me on trips for football. I mainly listen to all forms of extreme metal, but I want headphones that just sound fun. I have narrowed it down to the ATH-M50x ($210) and the Beats Solo 2 ($190). I understand Beats are sacrilege but after going on headfi and reddit it seems they are not actually all that bad. Just wondering what some of you think?

Specifically, the grey chart, the raw chart, can be compared easily between websites. The "corrections" are more different.

>ATH-M50x ($210) and the Beats Solo 2 ($190)

You can't go wrong w/ either. But you might look like a faggot with Beats on, and a nigger will steal them in a heartbeat.
M50s are a bit more discreet, but I heard the Solo 2s aren't that bad either and they can be wireless. The Solo 2s are more more fun to listen to and are better for casual listening, whereas the M50s are better as studio cans

You could always spend like $30-60 more and pick up M100s for ~$240 if you don't mind a little bass. More durable, portable, nice assfeticks, easily replaceable parts, customisation, great case, fun to use. Not sure how they'd sound for metal tho

But if had to pick b/w your 2 options for portable headphones: Solo 2 probably

the 770 is v-shaped, make no mistake. they're not absolute bass monsters and the treble isn't as rape as the 990, but they are far from neutral. if you want something neutral in that range get the m40x, xpt-100, or hammo s

if the track is already mixed the best you can hope for is careful eq editing. basically find the range the vocals are in then nuke everything else.

magni/mod and o2/odac have better build quality and they're more "future proof" in terms of power (though you probably won't every use that power). but the e10k is just as good audibly, will get loud enough on 99.99% of headphones, and it's more portable. costs less than half as well.

>>55877741
Really? I heard the HE 400s is better overall, around the same price if used

Narrowed down my choices to DT 990 or a Used 400s. Do you think the X2 still outshines them for open-backs? As I said, I don't care too much for accuracy or neutrality. And I like some bass, but not niggerbass

I'll check them out

having bought many used headphones, it's fine. just make sure you can return them or reverse payment if something is fucked up. but I've never had that happen and I buy off ebay from straight up randoms.

Whats the consensus on the Sony MDRXB800?
>>

Being advertised as XB instantly makes it shit.

yes I would say the X2 is better than the 990 and the 400s.

first off the 400s is not bassy, even with focus pads, it's got about as much bass as the hd600 (extension depending on pads), so adequate but not distinctly bassy at all, more mid-forwards. you would find them lacking in bass. and if you mean the old he400 they are bassy but have massive bass distortion and terrible comfort besides, do not buy.

the dt990 is severely v-shaped where the X2 is moderately v-shaped. more bass (excessive levels imo), mids in a trench, and then an extreme treble spike. if you love v-shaped you might like them but I would say the X2 is better by far.

Whys that?

Thanks. In my country I've found the M40x @ $90 and the HM5 @ $130 (which I've read is a clone like the XPT-100), is it worth paying more for the HM5? I've heard the M40x has no headspace and is uncomfortable, while the HM5 is better in both areas, but I've heard the M40x sound is better. The 770 is $180 btw.

Yeah, thats kind of what I'm looking for

I recommend Beats by nigger

>>55878026
Awesome. Thanks for the advice, mang
>>
>>55878040
m40x is more portable and smaller, HM5 is basically a desk-only headphone unless you're fine with using bulky headphones with a long cable in public. HM5 does win out in comfort, though it's a bit tighter and the pads are not as good as the XPT-100. sound is about the same, slightly better bass on the m40x imo, maybe smoother treble on the HM5, it's a small difference. I would get the m40x at those prices, but I would look up how much srh-840 pads are where you live. those pads + a bit of headband bending makes them much more comfortable. you can't really go wrong with either. HM5 and 770 are about $30 over priced compared to US btw.

you can do better then. the XB line in not good at being basshead, they have a peaky FR like original beats. budget?
>>
>>55878066
I'll just keep looking. Thanks for the help.
>>
>>55878085
I'm trying to stay below $200. I don't want a ton of bass thats sloppy and muddy.
I just want to have a bit more deep, solid bass that I can have at a lower volume level.
>>
>>55878072
Very helpful, thanks.
>>
Would a Magni/Modi stack or a Objective2+ODAC be a better purchase?
>>
>>55878132
The differences between them is neglible and share more similarities. Reasons to pick one over another is form factor (separate amp/DAC vs one unit) which ties into convenience due to cables, aesthetics, and/or price.
>>
>>55878105
step up your budget a bit and get the X2, or step down and get a CAL! or 681evo. if you want something right in your range now that is good, get the fidelio L2.
>>
>>55878243
>>55878105
oh and dt770 is another great option if you're ok with v-shaped sig.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give them a look.
I was also looking at the V-MODA Crossfade M-100

m-100 isn't bad but the bass elevation transition into the mids and highs is not good IMO, considering the price. the bass is elevated like +10db into the lower mids, then there is an immediate sharp slope down, like the mids all the way into the highs have just been shelved like -7 db overall, the slope downwards is more gentle and the bass boost is generally less in the other headphones I mentioned. it might be the best portable though, it folds and has great build quality and a great cable. fidelio m1 is also portable and good but it is an on-ear.
>>
>>55878288
>M-100

Good, mainly as portables, but over $200 unless you get used. Make sure you get the XL pads as well. I got the pads and it made a huge difference.

The cable also has memory and can fray just a bit, so I might need to buy a new cable eventually. But all extra parts are cheap and varied

Any good mic preamps that are cheap?

Hey senpai, I've got some wireless sennheiser headphones I've had for a good while, are recently one of the ear muffs has stopped working when adjusting the sound. I have to get the volume control in a precise location otherwise only one works.

Any idea what's happened? Are they dead?

It's hard to not recommend X2 when it's now $230. I got my M-100 at around 150 bucks from MS store new.
You can eq the M-100 to +3db for the mids. I never bothered with this on the X2.
>>
Sennheiser HD 215, or ATH M50x?

Which one has the better sound replication?
>>
>>55878678
Not if you like to oogle the innards, aesthetics are irrelevant otherwise.
>>
I've heard the X2's are good for almost any kind of music, i.e. everything sounds "fun" or alive. How true is this? Would you recommend them for someone who listens to a wide variety of music, going from more bass heavy stuff to classical, acoustic, mid-centric to music with lots of little detail and sparkle in the treble? Or what other alternatives are there in the 200$/€ price range? Are AKG Q701's too flat? What would give me a good balance and great detail?
>>
>>55878890
I changed the tuning settings and it seems to work better now. Must've been interference or something?
>>
Quick /g/, I'm in Amsterdam and I need some new headphones.
Are the MDR-1A's worth it for €179?
