Buyers remorse thread

Just bought an i7 6700K to replace my 8350

How much buyers remorse can I expect (both before and after Zen releases)?

You could have waited anon...

But yeah, I get it. I'm getting ridiculously impatient for Zen, too. I'm sure that 6700k will be just fine come Zen time. It won't be obsolete or anything, for sure.

bad move senpai. AMD's FX serioes was the last generation of AMD CPUs that do not include their flavor of IME botnet - the PSP

AMD Platform Security Processor (PSP) #amdpsp

This is basically AMD's own version of the Intel Management Engine. It has all of the same basic security and freedom issues, although the implementation is wildly different.

The Platform Security Processor (PSP) is built in on all Family 16h + systems (basically anything post-2013), and controls the main x86 core startup. PSP firmware is cryptographically signed with a strong key similar to the Intel ME. If the PSP firmware is not present, or if the AMD signing key is not present, the x86 cores will not be released from reset, rendering the system inoperable.

The PSP is an ARM core with TrustZone technology, built onto the main CPU die. As such, it has the ability to hide its own program code, scratch RAM, and any data it may have taken and stored from the lesser-privileged x86 system RAM (kernel encryption keys, login data, browsing history, keystrokes, who knows!). To make matters worse, the PSP theoretically has access to the entire system memory space (AMD either will not or cannot deny this, and it would seem to be required to allow the DRM "features" to work as intended), which means that it has at minimum MMIO-based access to the network controllers and any other PCI/PCIe peripherals installed on the system.

Furthermore, multiple security vulnerabilities have been demonstrated in AMD firmware in the past, and there is every reason to assume one or more zero day vulnerabilities are lurking in the PSP firmware. Given the extreme privilege level (ring -2 or ring -3) of the PSP, said vulnerabilities would have the ability to remotely monitor and control any PSP enabled machine. completely outside of the user's knowledge.

If I don't upgrade now, I will have to eventually.

I don't like it, but I've pretty much accepted the fact that botnet is built into literally everything, these days. All we can really do, at this point, is pretend we have an actual influence in politics, and hope, one day, the machine finally comes crashing down. Hopefully sooner, rather than later, considering how deep in the shit Hillary and the entire DNC is, right now.
>>
>>55836850
Don't listen to these fags. It's a spectacular CPU, probably more than you'll need for a while. For fucks sake, the top i7s from 2 or 3, even 4 generations ago are still going strong. You won't regret it.
>>
The 8350 gets btfo by any i3 most of the time...
>>
>>55837537
I don't think anyone doubts the 6700k.

Zen is pretty much confirmed to not blow it out of the water, just to compete well.

My only thing is that I spent nearly $600 for the upgrade (including mobo, ddr4 RAM, and a cooler, since I lost the Intel bracket for my 212), but I also really like AMD as a company, so I've been wanting to support them by getting Zen, from the get-go, and now I won't likely have reason to.

Its certainly better than buying Nvidia, but still...

At least my Fury X will actually reach its potential now. Overhead was fucking murdering me in some games, and the animation software I use generally kind of sucks at multicore
>>
>>55836850
My PS Vita.

At least I bought it second hand....
>>
The only real problem with the 6700k was that most of its performance gains came from all the other things that tied into it, such as ddr4 and newer chipsets etc.

Youll find some good performance gains however and you probably will still have the best CPU until Intel's next release.

Hopefully they can make performance gains in the CPU and not just its peripherals.
>>
>>55838066
That's another thing.
Why are the fucking chipsets so bad in so many AMD mobos?
>>
>>55837838
What is your use case?

Also if you wanted to upgrade when zen is released then you will get most of your money back on ebay
>>
>>55838211
Use case?
>>
>>55838338
What are you using your computer for.
>>
>>55838142
Mostly because they are ancient. AM4 and its associated chipset should be a nice improvement just for finally getting new stuff that has come out in the last few years.

As for something thread related I sure as fuck regret getting a Nexus 9. Shitty Tegra processor that keeps delaying updates, odd random pauses and slowdowns, needs rebooted constantly for issues, backlight bleed all over the fucking place, and 32GB of non-expandable memory can't even hold all the books and manga I want to put on it let alone videos and music.

The only reason I bought it was a 4:3 screen works better for two-up manga page reading than 16:9 or 16:10 like most other tablets have but with all the issues I have had I should have just kept my 2013 N7 that was working perfectly and not wasted almost $500.

a valid reason, indeed
>>
>>55838543
You could have probably gone with X99 and a 5820k for almost the same price as the 6700k

The 5820k has worse single core performance by about 10% when overclocked compared to an overclocked 6700k, but the 5820k has 2 more cores which would benefit you in your editing and such.

For gaming the 6700k will be slightly better though.

>Tfw completely forgot the 5820k existed
OH, LOOK. THERE'S THAT BUYERS REMORSE I WAS TALKING ABOUT.
>>
>>55838965
Both CPUs are going to be miles ahead of an FX-8350, especially in single core performance, but if you really do a decent bit of editing and other work which will use more cores properly, the 5820k will be a good 30% faster than a 6700k.

Not sure where you bought from but you still might be able to exchange if you really think the 5820k fits your use case better.

>>55838991
Newegg. Hasn't shipped yet, maybe I can change it...
>>
>>55839041
You can likely do so without any fees especially if you just dont accept receipt of the delivery (tell the delivery guy to return to sender)
>>
>>55838991
Ah, I remember why I opted for 6700k now... It's $40 cheaper.

Fuck it, not worth the trouble.
>>
>>55839075
Yeah newegg is stupid priced. I got my 5820k for $290 at microcenter like 6 months ago.
>>
>>55836850

Bought a Cyrix 6x86 PR200 back when they were new. "FPU should be ok to play Quake and Quakeworld" I thought.

Nah... Even when strapped with a Rendition V2100 card, the shit was barely 15fps at 320x240. A buddy of mine had a Compaq machine with a real Pentium 200MMX and the shit was a night and day difference.

I tried to make the situation better with assorted video cards and more memory, but Quake always ran like a lame dog in the Arizona desert.
>>
>>55836850

none. even a 2600k is a huge upgrade from an 8350 (i did it recently), a 6700k should be a lot better, and zen is shaping up to be a disappointment with it's bad memory controller and low clock speed.
>>
>>55839264
All the rumors I've heard about Zen have been good, except something about motherboard manufacturers having to spend an extra couple bucks in production.

Got some sources? I need something to read while I kill time.
>>
>>55839295

this entire thread: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2465645

tldr is that each ccx (group of 4 cores) on a zen cpu only has access to one memory channel and the clocks on A0 stepping (launch stepping) of zen are 2.8ghz, implying that they won't OC nearly as well as intel's cpus.

I was hoping for some actual info, but it's pretty much all speculation, anon.

I see the points the OP is trying to make, but it's based on shaky ground, at best, and some other posters make good points.

that's the good thing about AT forums, you get some people who actually work in the industry posting so you can usually get some pretty insightful information.

What mobo you get?

this is what you get for making a purchase without doing your research first.
All of those things could have been solved by doing some googling and looking for pictures/videos of the model of desktop online, but no. You had to be retarded.
>>
>>55837838
This is autistic as fuck, you'd still need a new board and ram and everything with zen and you'd still get inferior single core performance.
>>
>>55837838
If they really wanted your support they would release Zen sooner, like they initially said they would.

Planning to go intel/nvidia in a month, no fucks given.
Fuck this shit company lying about everything they do.
