Let's have a PC building thread since all other related threads are just AMD vs. Nvidia memes.

What do you think about my first draft? I'll admit that I don't know much about current PC hardware, this is more or less adapted from Logical Increments.

>>55832067
Buy a cheaper cpu and buy a better gpu
>>
>>55832128
The 1070 is almost 200€ more expensive though, I don't wanna spend more that 1k in total.
>>
>>55832234
You dont have to get a 1070 you can get an older gpus or even amd one.
>>
How much is the CPU overhead of AMD?

Im thinking of getting rx 480 but only going to buy a i5 6600

how much difference is the difference between i5 6600 + rx480 against a i7 6700k + rx480?

So I've had this build for a while but now I desperately need an upgrade. Can't even play the latest games with this. All I want is to play all the latest games at 1080p 60 fps. What would you guys recommend? Been thinking about getting a 480
>>
Rate me.
Aim is for no SATA, minimal case cabling, and VR readiness in conjunction with racing simulators in a small form factor.
>>
>>55832067
Why would you get a Z board without a K CPU?

Should be a negligible difference. The driver overhead is only apparenapwith mid-low end CPUs or lower.

Don't buy a SeaGate. EVER.

They have a horrible track record of failing drives.

Hell, I finished my system about a month ago and the drive already has shit write speeds (around 10MB/s on average)

Buy a WD so you don't regret it down the line.
>>
>>55838101
I never really had any problems with my seagate hdd because i made sure to read the reviews it had. People have to start reading reviews of stuff before they buy it.
>>
>>55834889
At least wait a few days for the RX470. Better than 380 for less moolah

>>55835110
Get an SSD, and wait on that 950 until it drops further in price or get the 3GB Pascal card

>>55837442
i7 isn't worth it unless you do encoding or something or you just really want to try to future proof.

>>55838027
Fury isn't worth it unless you're at 4K
>>
>>55838134
It was either the fury, rx 480 or gtx 1060 at this price range. Since the fury was on sale for $300(+20 tax) I went ahead and bought it since it tends to beat the rx 480/1060 in most benchmarks. Also i'll be playing at 1440p.
>>
>>55838165
Forgot to add that im talking about the AIB 1060/480 not the reference one.

I also tend to get

but people never elaborate beyond that.

what's wrong with the GPU? from the benchmarks I saw the 1060 was up there as a top card. of course the 1070 was better, but I was hoping to spend only $300 or so on a video card

machine will be used for encoding / video editing, streaming, and pc gayming

I see that this thread isn't uptodate.

Get i5 6400 the get a z170 mobo. And do a bit of search and update your BIOS. Then over clock that shit upto 4.5 GHz and enjoy it.

AMD driver is single threaded, so as long as you can get really good single thread performance you're fine. Like if you overclock the i5 6600 to 4.5GHz, you'll get the performance that hardware reviewers do, since they usually use i7 6700k at 4.5GHz.

32GB Kingston HyperX Fury 32GB 1866mhz
1TB WD10EZEX 7200rpm

Looks good.

If I were buying a 1080 rn I'd buy EVGA in case 1080ti launches for step up. But unlikely in that time frame anyway.

I have that keyboard too and love it. Case too. And PSU.
>>
>>55842179
550w PSu is plenty for that rig, $1089 is about right for an intel rig, those things aint cheap unless you go AMD.

what res are you at? 1070 probably better, but if can't fit in budget now you could go evga 1060 so you can step up to 1070 if you ever wanted to. (within the next 3 months I think it is).

at 1080p 1060 should be alright for mostly everything tho. I think.

and what do you do that uses an optical drive? can install OS from flash drives easily now.
>>
>>55840592

>>
>>55842237
I'm getting a high end gigabyte one, things looks pretty sweet, and it's way cheaper than a 6700k and will be a massive boost in speed, I wont bottleneck the card while running GTA V and that's more than I can ask for.
>>
>>55842257
1920 x 1080p res right now.

budget is a little tight so thats why I went with the 1060, but I'll get the evga version over MSI

I never actually use the optical drive anymore, just a habit of connecting one to my desktop
>>
>>55832067
-200$ because I found the parts cheaper. I'm thinking the cooler and case are overkill
>>
>>55842316

just looked up at step up is 90 days, so if you don't see any way you'd upgrade in that time period it doesn't really matter.

at 1080p the 1060 should be really good except for the demanding titles at ultra and shit. If you had a 1070 you'd prolly just render game at high res and downsample to improve quality.

I wouldn't worry about going bigger than 1060 until you've upgraded your monitor. Just my .02
>>
>>55842265
I'll tell you the hard truth, AMD fx 8350 would lose to i3 in most case scenario. Gaming/browsing/etc

Only time the 8350 would win might be when you're using video encoding, then it might be tiny bit faster.

If you want performance/price, go for i5 6400. It's around 170 USD. Then get a good compatible z170 mobo that allows OC on non-k CPU. You might have to download and flash the BIOS to do that.

Even without overclocking, the 6400 would be better than an overclocked 8350, guaranteed.

Need my advice, as it's good for you.

Corsair PSU's are unreliable

I've replaced my corsair PSU 5 times in the past 5 years. I've had to RMA it each time. I don't get power outages and it is connected to a surge protector, but overtime the 5v and especially 12v rails start spiking and forcing my computer to reboot at random times until I replace it.

Usually 5v gets around 6-7V, 12 has hit up to 14v. Piece of shit PSU's.

How would the build be altered (microATX) maybe if I wanted it to be portable not like a laptop but for moving from place to place in the backseat of a car perhaps?

Like if I had muh launch codes on it.

It's real. Something came over me and I just thought "yolo" in my head and bought it all. I really don't have a life outside of this so it was a good investment.
>>
Finally got a job recently and my first investments will be getting a new computer.

Not all at once though, but in increments. First things first being getting a nice new, more modern full case tower and a new power supply to build up to what I want to build up to eventually.

Have also been looking into liquid cooling as I'm right smack in the middle of the hot epicenter of Georgia at the moment as is usual in the summer.

My question is what all am I going to need if I want to liquid cool both my CPU and GPU? One loop or two loops? Multiple reservoirs or a single one?

I have a question and I figure maybe this thread can help me.

I bent a few pins on my CPU and in trying to fix them, one of them came off.

This was on a new motherboard, so I can't even tell if the motherboard even works yet.

Right now what's going on with my PC looks a lot like it's overheating, but my cooling system is exactly like it was (except that I had to reapply thermal compound) before changing motherboards, so I don't know why it'd be acting like it has no cooling.

Can a missing CPU pin make a computer act like this? It only boots and stays functional for a few minutes if I didn't boot it for an hour prior. It really doesn't act like there's blatantly broken hardware.

I have also put two monitors but would be needing one, so which is better, I'm going with the Dell one, but if the Acer one is Ok, I might get that one to save money. Would like to play at 1440p something at around 40 - 90 FPS on this GPU.

Keyboard and mice recommendation would be good (something around <$100), along with a few alternative PSU's if this ones is not available in my country since I'm from Europe.

Thanks in advance guys.
>>
>>55848150
Same price could be used to get a decent SSD instead. You won't see any benefit from using 32GB instead of 16GB unless its a very specialized task. However with the additional $50-60, you could get yourself a decent SSD size that will help you every time.

Or it could simply be used to allocate resource to a better CPU or a better GPU.

You could change out the supernova g2 for a corsair rmx series psu. The rmx series from corsair has an 11 year warranty. The rating is gold but performs the same as platinum/titanium rated psu's. They're also fanless until extreme heavy loads. I also probably wouldn't buy into the 212 evo meme with that kind of budget. Just get something decent like noctua. Everything else looks solid.

Check out this video for gaming mice recommendations.

I agree with you personally, but I'm saying what I heard in other boards why they felt the need to get 32 GB

Far as I've seen, you only need at most 16 if you want to just play games at top graphical settings. At least for most games.

Different anon, but you should keep the supernova g2's because they're actually much more reliable than corsairs. If you don't believe me look through this thread as there are other complaints about corsair PSU's. I've personally had issues with them myself.

As for the 212 evo meme, they're decent, but if you can get your hands on a Cryorig H7 Tower Cooler they are even better than Noctua, and much cheaper than one as well.

I personally wouldn't buy a 60hz monitor. The two monitors you linked are pretty damn expensive considering they're only 60hz. If you're already spending $500+ on a 1440p ips monitor you should consider a 144hz variant for about $700.

Monitors to consider:
ASUS Rog Swift PG279Q
Acer XB271HU

They are pretty much identical apart from the price and brand. Tftcentral has very indepth reviews of both.
>>
>>55848210
The P2 650w Platinum PSU version are cheaper ($85) and better. P2 are better than G btw.

Monitors look bit expensive for what they offer. Look more into the 1440p/IPS monitors on Amazon.

Although samsung's drive maybe reliable standard, the silicon power might be just as good, but twice as cheap per gigabyte. You can get the 480GB version for same price (and same speed). With double in size of SSD, you can crank down the price on regular HDD and get the cheapest 2TB HDD from seagate.

With that high of budget on i7, maybe a higher end cooler is in order for better cooling system. Either a watercooling system like h100i or something close.

Hey /g/.

My budget is a little over $400. I can buy refurbished or used parts. I have a case, 4GB of 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM, a 1TB hard drive and a 500W PSU already here from my old budget build back in 2014.

So basically all I need is a video card and possibly a new processor, motherboard, CPU cooler and newer ram. This is what I had in mind:

i3 6100
Cheap LGA 1151 Motherboard with basic features (USB 3.0 really.)
RX 480
8GB DDR4 2400Mhz RAM

I want to play a variety of gayms (Dota 2, Overwatch, Pillars of Eternity, Battlefield etc.)
and stream 1080p-4k video.

I know for a fact that I'll be getting an RX 480 in stock, however if you can recommend me an equally good used video card for less than $150 that would be wonderful. My current computer has an FM2 motherboard in it. Should I just stick an overclocked X4 760K in there?

How decent is the 16GB Patriot Viper 4? It seems to be the cheapest memory with 2400 speed on that site.

I don't know a shit about this motherboard tho. I am mainly looking for a motherboard that is cheap and which will handle the GPU and CPU overclocking. It does come with a free Doom serial tho.

The RX 480 Nitro is a bit pricey, but imo it's a better investment than 1060 if the next time i'll upgrade is in 5 years.

Chose i5 6600K because it costs just 20 yuros more than i5 6500. It shud overclock better.

Will the 620 watt PSU do? Gonna be overclocking the cpu to 4,5ghz and the rx 480 to 1,5 ghz.

I've bought most of the components for two powerful new computers but I'm dragging my feet on the selection of a case.

Question: do you know of a good, full size case which has the ability to LOCK? I'm looking for two different things here:
1) the ability to put a padlock through to ensure the case can't be opened without a key
2) the ability to slip a cable through some parts of the case to ensure that a criminal couldn't just steal the entire case and figure out the lock later

I live in a decently safe neighborhood but it's too close to some very unsafe parts (houses in my area get broken into rather regularly).

Considering that I'm investing ~$5000 in these two machines, does anyone know of a good brand or product that can fill these needs? I know there's no perfect safety measure, but I'd like some major deterrents

I did find these CPU lockers for ~$200... do you think they'd have much of an averse effect on airflow?
https://www.amazon.com/CPU-Locker-Color-Black-Large/dp/B0104T9D2W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1469993511&sr=8-1&keywords=cpu+locker

Thanks all for your help. I'd really prefer a case focused on security and I'm open to modding, but I'll go with the lockers if I have to...
>>

You can do all that yourself if you drilled small holes throughout the case.

it's mainly the single core performance is what holds FX cpus back. You'll be bottlenecking any high end card in a game like gta 5.

>the ability to put a padlock through to ensure the case can't be opened without a key
The only cases like that that I know of are some of Supermicro's FlexATX 4U cases.
>the ability to slip a cable through some parts of the case to ensure that a criminal couldn't just steal the entire case and figure out the lock later
You best bet is to put a Kenginston lock on the case, or weld a hardened steel ring to the case and chain it to the foundation of the building you're in.

That or move into a better neighborhood that allows you to shoot and kill intruders.

good point that I can cable up a metal case if it's secure enough not to be opened

It's not fucking worth it. The best security is not letting the world know you have something worth stealing.

You can't use a FlexATX case for most ATX motherboards, FYI. Plus, if you have any fancy graphics card with a PCI power connector on the side, they're most likely not going to fit.

Yeah, as the owner of a dark rock pro, i can tell you right now it's a complete heap of shit, you would be MUCH better off buying a 212 and putting a good quality noctua or corsair fan on it.

Never buying a fucking be quiet heatsink again, the mounting system is complete fucking shit and the performance (likely because of this) is extremely disappointing.

Got a bunch of SSDs and HDDs on my currenty setup (which wasn't entirely built by me).

Seems like the only major difference is SLI if you compare z-170 A and E to z-170-P. I bet Nvidia just charges Asus so much for the SLI, they have to keep them at higher prices.

http://www.asus.com/us/site/motherboards/Z170/compare/

Sure board with a SLI is a better future investment for youself and selling, but those boards cost like 30 yuros more and for that I could swap the cooler to a Noctua NH-U12S.

- Make 6600 a K and overclock it. Otherwise you might as well not buy a cooler at all.

- Don't buy into shitty memed SeaSonic PSUs. Get EVGA or fuck off.
