You can't ever completely disable windows 10 telemetry.
Microsoft is actively pushing towards making this ever harder to do as well - see the recent group policy change (which really insidiously simply ignores user settings altogether, without notifying the user in any way) for example.
You should not support this operating system.

You can 'upgrade' back to your previous system and always have the option to downgrade back to 10.

That's what I did.

Also I recommend everyone on /g/ with the knowledge to just run Windows 10 in a xen garden. Best of both worlds.

Literally impossible. They even updated the Enterprise """""disable""""" telemetry group policy in the November update to make it clear that it still sends some data. But then you won't have seen that, because you didn't and won't get the November update due to being on LTSB, despite the fact that you can turn mainline Enterprise into LTSB with ten minutes in Powershell, to enjoy all the benefits without being stuck on a buggy, year old launch build.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-ie/help/24717/windows-8-1-windows-server-2012-r2-update-history

https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/4tzp6c/psa_looks_like_were_getting_an_enterprise_ltsb/

> This update extends support of the Key Management Service (KMS) for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, in order to enable the activation of clients running Windows 10 Anniversary Update-based long-term servicing branch (LTSB) and Windows Server 2016 clients, when they become available.

> In addition to installing this update on the KMS Host, a KMS generic volume license key (GVLK) that is designed to support the Windows 10 Anniversary Update-based LTSB or Windows Server 2016 clients also needs to be installed.

> It is important to note again that not all feature upgrades will have an LTSB. The initial release of Windows 10, published in July 2015, has an LTSB and Microsoft expects to designate one additional feature upgrade in the next 12 months for long-term support. After that, Microsoft expects to publish feature upgrades with long-term servicing support approximately every two to three years.

You can't ever completely disable windows 10 telemetry.
Microsoft is actively pushing towards making this ever harder to do as well - see the recent group policy change (which really insidiously simply ignores user settings altogether, without notifying the user in any way) for example, and they will surely keep breaking things in the future.
Even if you yourself are not concerned about the data collection, you still expose information about your friends and family via Microsoft's aggressive surveillance methods.
You should not use, support or endorse this operating system.
The spyware has been backported to Windows 7 as well. You can much more easily remove it though - all it takes is uninstalling the related updates.
You can find out which via a quick google search for 'telemetry updates for windows 7 and 8.1', and then hiding them in Windows Update.
Don't forget to check for these every month or so, as Microsoft can push out new updates anytime that can reinstall the spyware.

I want to update then revert just so I can have the digital key if I need it in the future. I'm trying to make a system image to revert to just to be safe, but I'm getting problems with Macrium Reflect saying that I need to run chkdsk. If I update and revert with the standard revert option Windows 10 provides, what're the odds that I'll lose/corrupt some data?

You’re already an expert with the familiar Start menu, task bar, and desktop. Live tiles provide streaming updates of what matters most, instantly.

Windows 10 is designed to be compatible with the hardware, software, and peripherals you already own. And always-enabled updates help you stay current on features and security for the supported lifetime of your device.

Gaming just got even better with Windows 10. Not only do your existing games work great, but now you can play and connect with gamers across Xbox One and Windows 10 devices. From the best casual games to a new generation of PC gaming, Windows 10 is built for games you love.

Microsoft Edge is the all-new browser that helps you go beyond browsing and get more done on the web. Experience the thrill of writing or typing directly on webpages. Clear away distractions from your online articles. And, with Cortana enabled, you can instantly move from searching to doing.

Windows 10 gives you absolutely the best experience for doing what you do. Stay focused with easy ways to snap apps in place and optimize your screen space for getting things done. See your open tasks in a single view and create virtual desktops to gain space or group things by project, like Office apps for work and games for play.

If one makes the presumption that the modern IT is all about the internet, then you have to ask yourself
'Does Linux even have a choice in this matter ?'

A modern computing system is not one that is run from the command line - it is a system that is tied in with the internet Cloud. Just have a look at Windows 10 with Cortana and OneDrive for an example of this done right.

You need the outlook to connect in with the mass of email flowing around us every day. And then there is document collaboration - the sharing of Wordfiles and Excels between users across state boundries ! Voice over IP, cloud enabled 'Surface' computing, and voice command interfaces - all tied together with .NET and the OneDrive.

The driving force behind this internet is the Microsoft Sharepoint Server - a central peice of systems software which connects all these end points together, in a synergistic kaleidoscope that achieves both balance and symmetry.

The smart Vendors know that in order to get ahead in the future IT, that means integrating with the Cloud.

Linux has nothing on the Cloud.

Really surprised at the amount of people that still are putting up with Microsoft's bullshit after the shitfest that is Windows 10. Being public about mining data should have been an instant red flag to switch to another operating system. Seeing people panic over their updates, downloading placebo anti telemetry software, and just giving up embracing the botnet is pretty bad. I don't play much vidya anymore aside from emulation, so I went ahead and tried ganoo slash leenoox. It was frustrating at first since I've been desensitized to M$, but I ended up loving it. Windows is fucking garbage, holy shit everything is better here. If anything you can go even further beyond and make a Windows KVM so that it can live on the corner of your drive. You would keep the nice OS that is ganoo slash leenoox and have your gaymes and other software on M$ as well.

This guy knows what's up

Better yet, let me inform you that the idle maintenance feature introduced in win7 that is turned on by default (the one that eats up to 50 fucking percent of your CPU if you don't move the mouse for 5 minutes) and basically no one bothers turning off is actually a catalog function for all the non-system file names on your HD, which is then sent to Microsoft during a supposed "update". A database is built depending on the correlations of what you install in combinations (x + y program combination is installed in z majority, etc), a model is built and the data sold to advertising companies (google), major software companies and optionally the NSA/FBI if they request assistance for serious cases (and even their own profiling database). The rest of it is used internally for AI efforts and OS optimization towards the most used programs.

No company that sells a software that pretty much half of the world cracks for free gets to the market capitalization that Microsoft currently has, and also manages to maintain a close-to-full monopoly over that product. You would need an asymmetrical way of generating value that no other company does, like "classified" government deals and shady advertising-related contracting.

The exact same applies for Google and Facebook, both companies with a highly overvalued market cap. Google is already quite open to what it does with their ads, up to what was recently discovered - manipulating results for political parties that pay enough (and who knows what else that we haven't discovered), and Facebook incredibly likely sells face data for a major """anti-terrorist"""" facial recognition program for the NSA, and user data for government profiling and ad targeting (in fact, Facebook has already openly said that they're building a massive NN based on the huge database of photos they have)

Maybe that's what Snowden discovered and wants to leak so much, I don't understand why he delays it so much tho
>>
>>55823218
They replaced the vanilla search with Cortana, I haven't looked into it but I don't believe there is any difference between that and Cortana. It had the exact same functionality.

Like in older versions you had the "search" process run 24/7, now it's just replaced by Cortana.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

You can't ever completely disable windows 10 telemetry.
Microsoft is actively pushing towards making this ever harder to do as well - see the recent group policy change for example.
Even if you yourself are not concerned about the data collection, you still expose information about your friends and family via Microsoft's aggressive surveillance methods.
You should not use, support or endorse this operating system.

The spyware has been backported to Windows 7 and 8.1 as well.

It uses up your system resources as well as a group of other people's, without your knowledge to carry out actions that you don't know about at a remote party's behest. It was on by default and the settings for it are hidden with a link within a link which most people would never check.

It is a text book example of a Botnet.

Part of the setup allows you to turn it off, if you're too retarded not to that's your fault.

No they aren't, you can easily find them in the Setttngs

>It is a text book example of a Botnet.

Right, just like how most MMO clients also force Peer-to-peer to distribute updates because it's efficient to do so. Yet you don't call these botnets.

You clearly have no idea what a botnet is because a Peer-to-Peer network to distribute updates is not a botnet you dumb retarded tripfag

You didn't see the option if you choose the quick install instead of the custom. To get to the setting you have to open Settings, then click a hyperlink, then click a hyper link inside of that as well.

>>55828865
>Yet you don't call these botnets.
I don't call those a bot net because they only run when I allow them to, and they are completely up front about it.

It's a zombie because:
>it is installed and runs without your knowledge
>it communicates with its master
>its master can remotely trigger it to perform actions

It's a botnet because it is part of a group of zombies that can be controlled together.

You can't ever completely disable windows 10 telemetry.
Even if you try to filter it off at the router level, you're still fucked if you use more than your home connection.
Microsoft is actively pushing towards making this ever harder to do as well - see the recent group policy change for example. They _will_ break whatever workaround you use.
Even if you yourself are not concerned about the data collection, you still expose information about your friends and family via Microsoft's aggressive surveillance methods.
