Hi there, due to security reasons I am interested in using Linux (possibly Ubuntu but I am open to other flavors) to partially avoid information bridges and other related problems. I am not that great with computers, I use them enough to feel trapped in OSX but not enough to know the answer to what I am asking.

Should I have both operational systems (Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu)? or does it open a security risk in the system (outside of me not using Linux when managing sensible information)?

What other good secure OPs are there?

Info about myself: I use my computer for mostly studying, reading documents, browsing pretty tame sites and GIMP, so a system that is compatible with most of other's computers would be nice.

Try this:
https://www.bunsenlabs.org/
It's pre installed minimal Debian. Like, literally baby's first Debian. Never use Ubuntu. Too much adware and bloated.
>>
Install Gentoo
:^)
>>
>>55808498
:^)

That's the only /g/ meme I know. But this is going to make me visit this place many times
>>
>>55808483
How is its compatibility to window's computers? I do not want to alienate myself
And what about Debian? any cons that put it under it's minimal?
Also, try talking to me as if I was some pleb in both computers and elglish
>>
If you feel trapped in osx you are doing it wrong and will probably feel even more trapped in linux.
>>
>>55808546
If you are talking about communicating with Windows it works fine. Literally every server is linux. Your not going to be using any of the same software though
>>
>>55808483
so it's fine to use for a beginner to linux right?
>>
>>55808549
trapped in the way that it feels like a op for a phone, I have being using OSX for less than a year but that's what me, a windows user, feels. While I love how everything flows in OSX there are still some features and differences that make me stop. Possibly because I am not used to it tho
>>
>>55808563
That's fine, but what about file compatibility?
>>
>>55808588
Well then like the other dude said you will feel even more trapped using linux because it has less features and its more difficult to use than OSX and windows combined.
>>
>>55808645
B'But Muh security!
And I am interested in learning, but wow, less features? I understand where it comes from tho. What about a dual boot then?
>>
Dual booting is such a pain in the ass.

Take various nix distributions for a spin in a VM.
>>
>>55808786
The problem comes from not wanting to have the reptilians at the NSA watching my dickpicks, That I sould then see in a thread dedicated for security or /sqt/.
But I am also Interested in Linux, so I should be looking for an OP with many security options
>>
>>55809059
Look, nobody cares about your dick pics, especially not the nsa. If your main reason for moving to linux is because you don't people to track you then just download tor. If you are interested in learning about linux, the command line and programming then it doesn't really matter what distro you use. If you wanna jump into the deep end go something like debian, gentoo or arch , if you want to be baby stepped then go Ubuntu or any one of the thousands of pre set up distro's. Dual boot or use a VM in the beginning then if you like it move over completely. If you are really concerned about security you are going to need to know a lot more before you are gunna be able to take any preventative measures.
>>
>>55809059
Use Windows as a host and nix on VM or vice versa. Veracrypt/vpns are your friend.

If you decide to Rin winders in a VM
For gaymen you'll want a second vid card for your host machine and use PCI passthrough to use your main card on the VM as if it was on the metal
>>
>>55809135
It is a combination of me wanting to check Linux, be more security aware and a dear one going full "Delete the conversation, my computer is encrypted, yours is not". The last one was the point of no return, and that's why I am asking this even if I know that I am still unprepared.
I do want to use the deep web but I know that I may be too naive for that right now, so it is not a real concern in the moment.
I just want to take full advantage of the reverse AC-Unit on my side
>>
>>55809197
If you wanna go on the deep Web just do it, it's really not that interesting because anything interesting is behind a login. Just download tor and go on the deep Web wiki.

>Delete this conversation, my computer is encrypted, yours is not
Top kek

Just learn how to use a VM and install arch, arch wiki is pretty comprehensive and the beginners guide is good.
>>
>>55809263
Thank you
I am still getting Linux, I am going to take >>55809135 in consideration
About the DeepWeb, I just want ayys, nazi ayys and things to read, I really have no other use for it
And the conversation thingy, it really makes you feel like a pleb...
>>
>>55809316
No your friend sounds like a pleb who doesn't understand much about it. Probably just saying stuff to impress you.
>>
Install Gentoo. Not even memeing. You'll be glad you did.

A stereotype is based off a grain of truth, but a meme is based off a boulder.
>>
>>55809363
No, he is dead serious, he could be wasting his time thinking that he is safe or he could actually be the hacker known as 4chan. He is in danger, he can commit mistakes but never lie to me

Well, this tread may have no more reasons to exist
>>
>>55809388
Kek, it is going to the list
>>
>>55809392
What application/website were you using to talk with him
>>
>>55809442
Facebook of course, I think that I need to encrypt my connection to fix that issue. Not going full nuclear
>>
>>55809478
Hahaha yea your friend actually has no idea what he is talking about. Facebook is going to have every message you send regardless of any encryption on your computer. There are chat clients with end to end encryption but Facebook is definitely not one of them. Maybe link your friend this thread. It's obvious he needs to learn more about how encryption works
>>
>>55809551
He is busy, just tell me everything and will see tomorrow what he actually meant, he is very vage about that.
What other chat clients are there? I do not like Facebook because of Mark Zucker(((berg))), I actually only use it to talk and shitposting, so a better chat client will be an improvement over having all of this functions that I never use
>>
>>55809590
Google is your friend. Don't expect people to answer questions on /g/ that haven't already googled
>>
>>55809606
I am with all information I am being given, but it is nice to have more than one place to start, it is really a lot of info to take in, good thing that I have time.
>Google (or should I call it Jewggle) is owned by (((Sergey Brin))) and (((Larry Page))), better use an stormfront approved search engine next time
>>
>>55809673
Please stop green texting autistic shit. Google encrypted chat clients it's not hard
>>
>>55809717
:'( Sorry m8
>>
>>55808449
Install an OS and don't use it
Instead install virtualbox/VMware
Set up different virtual machines for work, business, personal stuff, and porn
If one machine gets compromised (porn), the data on the others are safe.
>>
>>55809747
Thar does make some sense, even if it seems very annoying. What is the best OS for porn? I am asking for a friend
>>
>>55809777
Any
>>
>>55809888
Vista?

Memes aside, anything my computer should have if I wanted to either dual both or use so many VR's aside for not being a shitty computer?
>>
>>55809928
Dual booting - hard drive space
VR- ram and hdd
>>
>>55808483
Nice fud
>>
>>55808623
There are some differences, e.g. there are no more .exes you download from a website. Instead you have a much more convenient package manager where you get all of your software for free.
>>
If it's about security using Linux along isn't enough.

It's likely that the majority of hardware is compromised. Look it up and judge for yourself. Even after making sure your OS and hardware are secure there is still online tracking. Get a secure, trustworthy vpn.

And this is just the beginning.
