Can you safely switch DE in Ubuntu in case you want to try another one or will it majorly fuck everything up? When you log in you can choose a session so is it possible to have another DE installed alongside XFCE?

Why would you ever use a WM instead of a DE?

So the main thing people do is add an extension to i3 called i3-gaps. Install it and then add a couple lines to the configuration. Gaps will be added to every pane as a separation and titlebars will be removed.

KDE requires systemdick and is still unusably buggy anyway, nevermind the garbage/10 design for everything with the massive gaps and lack of useful information.
XFCE is a meme, might as well go WM-only if you're even considering it.
Cinnamon is a bloated mess with a crap start menu/launcher. Slow as fuck.
Gnome is purely for masochist who believe they should indulge in their fetish 24/7.
Unity is gnome for people just getting into the fetish.
TDE is unusable. Critical bugs out the ass, no plans to move to further versions of qt, fuckall development overall let alone bugfixes.

Mate is the only viable option, period.
