Hey I was wondering what's the big deal with Apple TV? Is it any good? I know because it's an apple product it's probably expensive. But what does it do that an ordinary flat screen can't?

It can actually run apps competently ("Smart" TVs lag like hell), access your iTunes content and play games. If you don't see a use for those things then it is not for you. A Chromecast is a cheap alternative without the bells and whistles. Just streams content from another device (Android, iOS).
