I recently started renting a VPS. The original intend was to use that one for file hosting and websites only, but I somehow came to think up a domain for the server that I'd like to use for my email address too (been wanting to switch from gmail for a while).
Now it seems I can either set up an email environment up myself or purchase email hosting else where and refer a subdomain if that's possible on whatever host.
Does anyone have experiences with either choice? I was thinking of self hosting since that would probably mean more flexibility (only way to use the main domain and not a subdomain for email?), but many people claim that it's a complete pain in the ass and waste of time.
Is it really? Because it at least seems like it should work just fine if configured correctly.

I've done it for small businesses using exchange. It's not hard to set up.You just have to keep an eye on security.
If you are not careful it will end up getting abused by spammers.
Utilize DKIM so your sent emails don't end up in the spam folder. Besides that setting up a mail server is pretty standard.
Guess I'll give it a try. Thanks for the feedback
