Quick!
Should I install it?

Does it perform better?

Is it worth it?

Do you have copious amount of cp on your computer?

No?

Then yes, you should install it.

"Upgrade" then roll back right away, so you wont have to worry about "free period".

>Does it perform better?

I have Win 10 "Pro" at work and Win 7 at home and cant really spot the difference in performance, except for searching going MUCH faster and thats basically all.

In order for it to work properly, you should do clean install anyway.

>Is it worth it?

If you are about to make new, clean install, yeah. If you are about to keep using your current OS, not really.

If you want to use Dx12, then yeah, pretty much you will be forced to, sooner or later. That kinda apply to any Windows, however. Just keep older version (XP or 7) on other drive, in case if something would refuse to work properly. Or set VM.

You mean fuck windows in general. They've recommended a clean install over an upgrade since the 90s. It's just not a good fit when you try an smash all your old settings and software onto a new OS

Which is lighter in terms of RAM usage in idle, W10 or W7? Assuming we have trimmed all those useless services at msconfig.

>>
>>55778492

Thats why I said to upgrade and roll back. Your key will stay "upgraded", if you would want to install it in the future (and if you want to continue using Windows line, you will have to, at some point) and at worst case, MS will get single spike of data that is useless for them anyway (since what they need are patterns, not one-time info).

>Which is lighter in terms of RAM usage in idle, W10 or W7? Assuming we have trimmed all those useless services at msconfig.

Both my 7 on idle (I mean, 15 minutes after log in) and 10 right now eats 2gb of RAM (I checked right now, but I run Firefox and Libreoffice, thats around 300mb on memory). I guess they are similar, since my home have Avast and Nvidia control panel running (my work PC use integrated GPU and Defender).

>Also does W10 boots faster or the difference isn't that much?

Win 10 use same trick as 8 did, so it actually hibernate itself after logging out of user account. When I force it to actually restart, start up time is similar.

>upgraded to w10 only for the resizable cmd prompt
>use linux anyway because I can get easier and faster the compilers, libraries and software I need

Apart from the graphic drivers (I'm on AMD and the desktop compositing is meh) everything works better in Linux and I'm even getting better battery life than 10.

Also on 10 the search is buggy (worse than 8.1), the battery life is worse than 8.1 and there are many subtle (but occasionally annoying) bugs with the drivers and the interface.

If it wasn't for the resizable cmd I wouldn't bother with 10.
Linux is better in every way.
>>
No. Keep Windows 7/8.1, they just werk. Install Ubuntu (or your favorite distro, personally I think Ubuntu LTS is a good choice for everyone, not only beginners) on a separate partition and start slowing learning and migrating to it in your free time (you have four years to complete the transition). When support for 7/8.1 ends, if Microsoft hasn't fixed Windows 10/11/or whatever, move to Linux completely. Vote with your OS choice and don't be cucks willing to accept any shit MS puts out.

>>55778410
But performance-wise it is worse than 7.
>>
>>55778519
You're asking the wrong question. You don't WANT to have unused ram, even at idle. That's wasted potential. The whole point of ram is to try and have the files you actually use loaded up and waiting so your wait time is reduced. Having it constantly near full is better.
>>
>>55778597
>Linux is better in every way.

No one is talking about linux here, just windows 7 vs windows 10. Get the fuck out.

It has been resizable since at least Windows 7, only you can't do it thru the window borders.
>>
>>55778647
Then it just ditches the files that are lower priority to make room. Either way trying to have near empty ram usage is completely the wrong idea, and a mistake newbs have been making for years. Sure you want to have your system use ram EFFICIENTLY, but there's no direct correlation between that and how much ram you use at idle.

Just shrink your windows partition to make room for the extra one.

>>
>>55778694
>Then it just ditches

How costly is the ditching vs simple new memory allocation?
>>
>>55778647
>Can I create partitions without a fresh install?
Yes, use Windows Disk Management tool and the Shrink Volume option to reduce the size of your Windows partition. Then use the Ubuntu installer to create the Ubuntu partitions (the install program is pretty easy).

>>55778699
Not worth downgrading to 10 over that imo, but to each his own.
>>
>>55778713
The biggest time constraint would be making sure that whatever you are removing from memory isn't critical to some process that's running. If you were trying to take back memory from some independent program like chrome, you would either have to wait for chrome to slowly comply or risk crashing it because something its counting on was taken away. With the system itself, it can earmark certain things as more disposable and get rid of them as soon as it wants. With enough ram it's not an either or scenario anyway. It won't fill ALL the ram usually, but keeping the first few gigs full at idle is just good practice

Then you're talking about wanting to have most of your RAM used as in cached, because otherwise all of your RAM would be constantly used and your comp would start swapping or some bullshit and everything starts to lag. Can we stop this shit meme please?
Whenever someone sees "uuh my Windows / Linux only uses 2 GiB" they don't actually see the cached part because task manager / system monitor hide the cached part / don't show it as used, so this whole "you want your programs to use as much RAM as possible" thing is bullshit.
You want your programs to be have a footprint as small as possible so that you can have many of them loaded in RAM at the same time being able to switch quickly between them.
I know it's just semantics in the end by what "used" means but it's still miseading.

if you want a legit 10 and keep your 7 too, heres how i did it (theres probably way easier ways but i'm a fucktard who overcomplicates stuff)
get a spare drive, install windows 7, activate with daz. run the the media creation tool, this will confimr your upgrade and add your hardware profile to windows activation servers.
install 10 from dvd or usb on your spare drive or partition.
(for UEFI 7 users, make sure to switch to legacy boot before installing 7, or daz will not activate. you can switch back to uefi before installing 10)

I dunno if my Win7 was fucked in some way or it's just case of installing unnecessary bloatware drivers but my CPU was seriously bottlenecking in games like GTA5 and Witcher 3 (i5 3570 non-k, Polish poorfag edition) - in 1080p it would easily reach 100% usage in crowded city parts. Once I bought a 2560x1080 monitor it only got worse and the CPU started shitting itself and even at 80% of usage I would start experiencing freezes and stuttering. Either way I was bored so I decided to dual-boot into Win10 just so I can find out that my usage dropped by 20% (W3 60-70% usage on avg) and even in heavily crowded city parts where my CPU reached 90-100% load I still didn't experience any stuttering what so ever. I barely installed any drivers on win10 though as the OS detected majority of my hardware without problems, simply followed the "exclamation mark" rule of device manager and since then I have no problems. Just my 2 cents, I suspect a combination of bloated drivers in W7 since I had to install everything manually and better utilization of resources in W10. Personally it was a life saver as I didn't have to spend $400 on new CPU, MOBO and RAM.

Next week Cortana will be mandatory, and there will be periodic updates in an attempt to make steam, and all other win32 programs run terrible enough that you would go through the Microsoft store. I wouldn't purely because the updates are going to be obtuse, invasive, and mandatory.

The only development that's being done for Windows is enterprise development, and UWP has no place there. All customer-oriented development is being done for mobile platforms and the web. Windows is dead except for the enterprise, and you know it, and MS knows it. That's why both UWP and Windows 10 are so shitty: they don't care anymore, they have put the worst programmers there while moving the good ones to Visual Studio, Office, Azure, etc i.e. the real cash cows.

Pretty much every newer version of Windows past 7 has incrementally larger overhead, despite them trimming features.

Windows 7, on the other hand, actually ran on systems that crawled with Vista, so I think that was the last time they actually tried improving on things while making sensible progression and refinement.

Windows 10 for free legacy support and some old games I love
OS X Lion for driver and hardware support because macbook pro breaks without it

However it seems that ~2010 Macbook Pros aren't eligible for upgrade, despite the system recommending it. The result is a mess I am trying to figure out.

I want to get the rights to a free upgrade, as it means I wouldn't have to pay for Windows 10 on my next computer years from now, but I can't figure out how to ensure it with my setup. Don't care about usability as much as I plan to reset it anyway, just want to get my upgrade rights locked in.
