Got a MacBook recently. Was using Linux before I moved and haven't worried about scanning/preventing malware/viruses in a good 5-6 years.
Can I take the same approach while using OS X?

If you aren't retarded then you won't have any issue.
Make sure you have a current version of Common Sense AV installed.

Do you like the Mac, anon?
Install antivirus, disconnect from the internet permanently and pray 12 times a day

Just leave the Gatekeeper setting on it's default and you'll never have any viruses.
From macOS Sierra, there won't even be an option to disable Gatekeeper, although the manual override option is still available for people who know what they're doing.
If you're stupid enough to download and run browser malware, or shit like MacKeeper, just use Malwarebytes AntiMalware for Mac.

So there will be an option.

You have to use a terminal command instead of ticking a box.

Or right click the thing you want to open and select "Open". I've been using the "App Sotre and identified developers" setting for a couple of years and it hasn't felt locked down since it only is a small extra step, and you'll know what Apps are safe to use out of the getgo if this isn't required.

Trojans exist.
People may try phishing on you as well.
etc.
You should practise secure computing regardless of what OS you are using.
