But it has little useful software, few people to work on the drivers, shit UI, and worst of all, the GPL.

It's easy to say "find a cheaper contract", but it's not always that easy to do. Remember, at the time, phones were rather strictly tied to specific carriers. If we're talking far enough back, the iPhone might not have even been available at all outside AT&T.

Beyond that, some people have signal issues in their homes or in their workplaces. My dad used to be the only person who got a cell signal in the factory where he worked because he used AT&T, and my cousin used to have T-Mobile, but lived in a T-Mobile dead zone. It's complicated.

Apple is great at a lot of things. Advertising is one of them, but making a stable product that is goal-oriented and actually fucking works, rather than chasing the spec-sheet dragon and abandoning all their old hardware like an ADHD-addled 10-year-old.

The differences between Mac OS X, Windows and Linux are as it follows:

1) Proprietary software always means to make money when free software always mean to serve its community. If a community considers a free software stops serving them they fork it, when proprietary software means to prevent this.

2) As a free software, GNU/Linux (I'm putting GNU here because it matters) means to serve its community, while Mac OS X and Windows are proprietary software.

3) Mac OS X makes money from the luxury computers Mac OS X is sold with and built for, therefore there is no reason for Apple to betray its community.

4) Windows was sold so it could be installed. Now it's free to install. I don't know how they make money but in both cases I have no reason to trust Microsoft.

If you think Windows is better than Mac OS, you're just showing us you haven't been here long enough. You probably use Windows and are only saying GNU/Linux is good as a cover to allow you to shit on the macfags that you so despise.

Mac OS is not great. It's not perfect. It's not better than GNU/Linux. However, like GNU/Linux, it is a unix-like operating system, and it's going to be much more pleasant to use and allow more serious work than Windows. I'd say if these are your three choices, most GNU/Linux users would choose Mac OS over Windows.
