I would like to buy model M in Poland and I am pretty clueless. Is it that much meme keyboard? Personally, I find the layout of the keyboard to be great and I used to work on various "clones" with such designs.

Questions:
- It is quite a challenge to find English-layout keyboard in Polish auctions / craigslist-like sites. Any fellow anons from Poland has some own experiences with obtaining it?
- What is the price I should not cross? I am looking for prices and they are very different. For instance on UK site there is 100 pounds, while on US amazon its 100 dollars.
- I guess the shipping is part I need to simply deal with it.

they're fine, literally typing on one right now, but they're not the end all by far. buckling springs aren't objectively the best switch type, and i don't care how "well built" these are, when was the last time you broke a keyboard?

You can find them on eBay too. New USB ones are $85 and don't require adapters or have issues.
Plus it pays the people who are still making buckling springs instead of randoms. Search thrift stores for model Ms, alternatively

Some of the later Lexmarks had permanently attached cables but the internals were mostly the same. The decent Lexmarks were just as good, they got bad rep for also producing quiet versions (greased spring and rubber domes) but as long as you look up the model number and it checks out as buckling spring you're good to go

can i replace my razer blackwidow( the first one) keycaps with something more swag?

Anyone have a review of Gateron Browns?

I'm mainly concerned with longer term functionality - are they known for not breaking down over extended use?
>>
>>55774486
they haven't been around long enough for extended use to be a thing

i don't think anyone's ever reported serious switch breaking though. the only build issue with gaterons seems to be that they wobble a bit more than cherry switches.
>>
>>55774486
they should outlive you, and will last much longer than the rest of the board unless you fuck them up
>>
>>55770422

Depends on what's broken. If it's the circuit membrane, you're kinda screwed. If it's the switch, should be kinda simple.

If you need help with what to do, go search for "Care and Feeding of an IBM Model M"
>>
>>55774511

How long have they been around? If I can get 5-10 years I won't complain much.

Which mechanical keyboards would /g/ recommend for a hairy guy? I obsessively clean my keyboard but it gets filled with hair under the keys and I'm looking for a model that's very easy to clean and where hair can't get trapped underneath too easily.
>>
>>55779605
varmilo vb87m

it has semi floating keys and is wireless for easy cleaning
>>
Well I've tried out two keyboards so far. With brown and blue switches. I didn't like either. Using those key tester things doesn't really give you the full experience. I bottom out because i'm a fag so the browns just felt weird. The blues even worse because I felt 3 things going on. I've decided to go with reds since I think they'll suit me the most since I can't help but bottom out. I would've considered topre but it's just out of my budget.

From what I've read, it sounds like blues are what I want. I've tried greens irl and they aren't super great imo

Looking at a diagram definitely ANSI

My laptop has a 100 percent layout with fn and numpad. I would like either 100 percent or 80, I don't really care which.
>Backlight
I don't really mind the lel gamer colorz too much, as long as you can turn it off. I would prefer white leds
>Previous/current keyboards
Acer laptop keyboard, (chiclet) and a logitech keyboard/trackpad combo that I don't find easy to type on, the keys are too close together for me.

So, I thought Ducky was supposed to be a reputable company that had some quality control since the keyboards are so expensive

I was very wrong.

I bought a Ducky Shine 3 as my first and only mechanical, worked pretty well until 1/4 of the keyboard's LEDs randomly turned on and would not shut off.

I'm guessing there's some shoddy soldering somewhere in there or something, huge annoyance and I can't bring myself to pay for it to be repaired.

Also yes I know I'm a huge faggot for buying a backlit keyboard, won't make that mistake again.

Sounds more like there's something shorting out things or like a firmware issue. Consider opening your keyboard and cleaning the PCB with some isopropyl alcohol.

Ducky makes good keyboards, but their strategy is actually to invest less in QC and to invest more in customer support instead. They're known for having absolutely amazing customer support in Taiwan, which is where they are located.

If you're outside of Taiwan, good luck I guess, hopefully they'll do something nice for you.

I'd like a new keyboard, open to suggestions. Unicomp keyboards look great in terms of aesthetic but I need higher than 2 key rollover. Das Ultimate seems OK except for the glossy plastic. Template below:

Budget: Up to 170 USD/230 AUD. Lower is always fine of course but for something exceptional I'll pay a premium
Location: Australia, can order most things from Amazon though
Preferred switch: Blue
Layout: ANSI
Form: 100%
Backlight: No
Previous/Current keyboard: K60 red switches

I'd like something more enjoyable to type on than what I have now with nice build quality that'll last a while. Nothing that looks like >>55768017 please, I don't want to be distracted by glowing LEDS or colours everywhere.

you can't buy anything with that level of customization at that price
obviously the downfall of that is complete shit quality
SA offers nice keycaps but the majority of their keycaps are only done through groupbuys so you have to be in the right place at the right time and are somewhat price ~$100
GMK is also another popular manufacturer with considerably better quality but also at a higher price ($80 is the cheapest i've ever seen and also happens to be available to get rn)
Gateron keycaps are probably the best keycaps for value because not only are they about as thick as GMK(actually might be thicker) they are made out of PBT which doesn't shine as fast as ABS
actually i dont know anyone with shiny PBT you gotta have some nasty oily hands/never wash your hands to make that happen
issue is gateron/enjoyPBT is relatively ugly and bland

I want to get a mechanical keyboard for the first time to play fps games and work on the desktop. Is a Cooler Master CM Storm QuickFire Rapid-i with brown switches a good starting point? I can get it for 109€ at a local store and the keyboard has italian layout, which is great since I'm italian. Thanks in advance!
>>
>>55794366
Not really, I wouldn't recommend browns or italian layout.
>>
>>55794382
> italian layout
It's good to me, since I'm italian. What is wrong with italian layout?
> brown switches
Ok what would you recommend then? Other models that caught my interest were the Topop (45€) and the VicTsing (39 €), both of them having Cherry blue switches and being tenkeyless. They have american layout though, which I'm not very familiar with. I don't want a full sized keyboard, since I'm not going to use the numpad anyways and I think that I'd probably have a more comfortable position when playing with the mouse on a tenkeyless keyboard.
>>
>>55794438
>What is wrong with italian layout?
The moment you decide that you want some aftermarket keycaps that aren't as shit as the stock keycaps that almost every keyboard comes with, you will curse yourself for using ISO.

Browns are the shittiest of cherry switches. If you want something just as light, get reds. Otherwise blues, clears, greens or whatever else floats your boat, just don't get browns.
>>
>>55794463
Thank for the reply. I find your statement against browns a bit puzzling to be honest, because I'm sure that I heard many people say that browns are a very good compromise for both gaming and working.
>>
>>55794480
That's pure marketing. No matter what you use it for, they will always feel like rougher MX reds when you get up to speed.
>>
>>55794480
>because I'm sure that I heard many people say that browns are a very good compromise for both gaming and working
there's no such thing as a "best" switch for gaymen or for typing. That's marketing bullshit that for some reason still keeps getting propagated by people who have no idea what they're talking about.

Browns feel like reds with dirt in them, they may seem tactile if you slowly press the key down, but as soon as you actually build up any speed and momentum when typing they'll just feel like linears with shit stuck in the middle.

I'd recommend getting a switch tester and checking what suits your tastes. There's plenty of chink keyboards that provide quite good value for the price, if you want a more reputable brand, look for cooler master or ducky. Cooler master makes good bang for the buck keyboards, ducky makes a bit more expensive and somewhat fancier keyboards.

Other than that there's also a ton of other good brands out there, one being the KUL that the other anon just posted. If you tell us your budget we can recommend you something that fits it.
>>
>>55794582
>>55794564
Thank you. I don't have any limit on budget to be honest, what I'm looking for is mainly a keyboard that is durable and reliable over extended time of usage for both gaming and working. I'm looking for a keyboard with caps having low resistance to pressure. Since it's my first mech keyboard, I'm searching for something below 150€. I heard great things about Filco's keyboards, but I don't know if spending that much money for the first keyboard would be a wise investment (here they range from 130€ up to 200€). I checked some eu sites for the Kul ES 87 and so far I've found one dutch site where tbe Kul es 87 with red switches is worth 145€.

>>
>>55794689
the kul is supposed to be a good value proposition

>>55794829
it seems to be a subpar board

>>55795015
really you can't go wrong with any switch
the only bad one is browns theyre trash in all respects
if you haven't owned a mechanical keyboard before the most seamless transition would be most likely into mx reds or gateron blacks
mx blacks are most likely too heavy and gateron reds are most likely too light

Not sure if it will work. I can get pic related in my town (about 10-15RON or so) but I don't think it will work. I installed resistors on the data and clock line, like in this guide - http://ps-2.kev009.com/ohlandl/keyboard/modify_keyboard/Model_M_Modifications.html (4.7k 5%) but to no help.

If anyone worked inside one of these (PCB wise) and if this helps, the wires of my PS/2 cable I used are 5v for red and black for GND. There are two wires, yellow and white, that I can't find out which is clock and which is data.

BTW,I found out that my Model M is a Dutch version and it uses rubber domes (enclosed in some black thingy that covers whole keyboard without case) instead of buckling springs. Is it still worth saving?

this is the truth, sadly.
3 days ago: boss is sitting next to me, I explain some data for him. I just hit up some document, laying out our thoughts.
him: "Where did you learn to type that fast?"
me: "errr, my mom is a secretary, I guess.."

There are no keycaps. Really. And yes, under each key, there's a discrete dome.
>>
>>55795658
Do you need to insert that for the keyboard to work?

I wasn't mocking you, just expressing exasperation at how so many people can be so hopeless at things they use so regularly.

I don't even type particularly fast by /g/ standards, but to some of my normie friends I'm a fucking speed demon.

I'm glad that my testing team at work are all either experienced or young and clued up on technology.

let's see the guts

and the actual top

did you make the case yourself? What about the plate?
>>

You call that a textbook? Looks more like a grade school agenda. College a shit.

Its a keytronic, a rubbedome. Its like 80% of a topre switch though it doesnt feel like a mechanical.

No one knows a good way to mod spacebars? Or a place to buy a non standard space bar? Black pbt?
>>
>>55784423
Are you looking for a spacebar with stems like the one on the top? I actually have one like that laying around on my ducky shine 4 (that never gets any use)
>>
>>55797515

The bottom one is what I need. The top is what seems to be pretty standard. Notice which one lines up with the switches that are exposed.

Leopold did some fairly non standard things with their spacebars and changed them more then once. I might just have to make one to fit.
>>
>>55797542
Oh I see, good luck then.

If it's any consolation, you seem to be sporting browns, so getting a new board doesn't seem like that terrible of an option to me.
>>
>>55796394
Seriously i was doing a group project one time where we had to simulate arthritis. We tested typing and I was like 30-45wpm with my hands covered in tape. A group member remarked that I still types faster than they normally did.
>>
>>55784067
Use it as a FN key

(also, where in the hell are you going to get 1x0.75u keycaps?)

Alright /mkg/ I'm in the market for my first mechanical keyboard. I've never typed or gamed on one before so I don't know exactly what I want, but I'll start with some basic criteria.
>Budget
About $125
>Location (continent at least)
Western US
>Preferred switch type
I'm leaning towards MX Brown, but I actually have no idea. It needs to be fairly quiet so my girlfriend doesn't get pissed at my new purchase.
>Layout
I want full keyboard with funtion keys and numpad.
>Backlight
Yes. This is a must. Frequently use in the dark.
>Previous/current keyboards
Current keyboard is my laptop Steelseries which I quite like as far as laptops go. Going to be using an external monitor from now on so I need to close my laptop thus need an external keyboard.

Anything else I can say that would help?
>>
>>55799560
You dont need varmilo caps for a varmilo board. It has standard ANSI layout, pretty much every set out there will fit.

I know I'm going to be shat on for this, but I'm new so what the hell.

I'm looking at this Corsair keyboard on Amazon and it looks pretty nice. I know I'm paying for the name but I honestly don't give much of a fuck, it's within my price range.

They used to sell directly from their email [email protected] but it seems the qt3.14 chink salesgirl quit and now nobody at varmilo speaks english.

You can get some at ebay or aliexpress tho, but not for cheap.

No shame in being new, why do you need a load though? Get a tkl if you don't use it much, you'll thank yourself later.

Not a big fan of exposed key switches personally but if it works for you then ok

Probably a good first board, hope you like it

Don't press any of the keys, ever.

That's why there's so few of them, so there's less chance of you pressing them.

Ansi poker II, reds, used
vs
Iso/Ansi filco majestouch 2 tkl, reds, new

I. can't. decide.
I rarely ever use the arrow keys or page down/etc but I do use the F keys sometimes.
I'm also ISO user and don't know if the switch is worth it.

yes those would be perfect but the only board in EU I know of with this factor are the noppoo choc mini and the filco minila
The noppoo has shitty fake switches (for the money) and the minila has that disgusting tiny spacebar.
I think I will go the safe route and go with filco majestouch 2 ninja ISo (yes with the nice big ass enter)

look for keysets with 1800 kits.

You can also just buy a DSA TKL kit, should have enough keys to feed the board, plus it's all flat so profiles don't matter
>>
>>55806613
You essentially need a TKL set of keys plus

* A 1.75u right shift
* A row 1 end
* A row 2 page down
* A row 3 page up
>>
>>55806749
sorry they're not called 1800 kits, Donno why I said that

I might head over and grab it this weekend, as I'm gonna be probably getting this retro unit, pic related

I was on the fence too and I bought both, sent the black one back. I prefer the printed keycaps, especially because the layout is a little unusual to learn. The print on the black is super hard to read, and ultimately, I just liked the white better. White is sharp, you'll like it.
