1) your post's title should read "tim sweeny THINKS microsoft might want to destroy steam"

2) why are neo-nerds so defensive of steam? I remember when steam came out and everyone despised it as evil DRM and complained at how shit it was. now nerds worship it and are addicted little valve-drone consumers.
>>
>>55766481
That's the most delusional thing I heard from somebody from the industry.

1) They marketed W10 to gamers by showing them Steam and Steam-related products. That's not something you do when you see it as your competitor and you are going to destroy them in the next 5 years.

2) The only company that is making Steam more broken now is Valve. They make billions a year and development of their platform took steps sideways or backwards, but not once forwards. They aren't investing money to make proper support for their product, but they sure invested plenty of money to do damage control when their incompetence caused major personal information leak.

You apparently didn't read the article. Microsoft is pushing their new Universal Windows Platform that requires users to modify the settings to allow installation of programs from sources other than the Windows store and as time goes on will eventually deprecate Win32. They're trying to push desktops to a more locked down smartphone like environment and this goes much farther than just games.

>>

>in regards to MS ever deprecating WIn32 in the next 50 years.
Simple
>Microsoft releases new features for UWP and not Win32
>developers want to use those features so they develop UWP programs instead of Win32 programs
>development slowly transitions to UWP
>eventually a new version of Windows disables execution of Win32 programs by default for security reasons and allows users to enable it if they dig through the settings, just like 3rd party UWP programs
They don't actually have to completely remove it to kill it.

Unless they develop a patch for CS:GO problem with detecting nvidias cards memory (setting.mem_level -1 bug) in the next month im pretty sure steamOS and steam on linux is going to die, leaving few Linux native games on GoG aside from the usual ID software/Unreal games or open source engines.

Microsoft doesn't have to attack Steam directly. They just have to only continue to develop the new Universal Windows Platform that requires users to turn off security settings to allow programs not from the Microsoft store and slowly wind down and eventually stop further development of Win32. Think for a moment. There's more ways to achieve a goal than just direct action and attacks.

Because Apple does it to make things even simpler for all the retards, but doesn't fuck over people who don't need their hands held at the same time.

Windows does it because they want to force you to do shit their way, for no discernable reason.

Whereas when Apple does this shit, things actually become more streamlined, whenever Microsoft does it, they manage to make everything even more broken, fucked up, and retarded than ever before thought possible.

Although it's seriously looking like Linux will be the only choice in the next couple of decades.
>>
>>55767616
To be honest, as much as I'm not comfortable with the idea of not actually owning my games, Steam has saved me a lot more than it's ever fucked me. I don't have to keep track of all my games as physical copies or download keys or whatever, and I have them all immediately available on whatever computer I log on to.
>>
claims made without evidence can be dismissed without evidence

also i think that the likelier scenario is that microsoft will just drop their windows store in 2-3 years and make all previously purchased software unusable. unlike tim sweeney's claim, this is based on something microsoft actually did in the past with GFWL.
>>
>>55767616
Holy shit it's incredible how dumb people on this board sometimes are. Steam is not the point you gigantic retard. The point is that Microsoft is using its leverage to impose their own platform and limit competition, not only from Steam but from possible future competitors. Maybe the next Steam-like store doesn't have DRM, but it won't be possible for them to compete with MS.
>>
>>55767616

and as for the spying, well if you value your privacy then you don't belong on a computer. we've been living in a post-privacy world for a while now.

>>
>>55766966
There is no way they are ever going to deprecate win32. After all their own fucking OS depends on the win32 subsystem. If they deprecate that they can kiss enterprise customers any everyone else basically goodbye because any application not written for UWP will not run.
>>
>>55768160
No it's not fucking true.
>>
>>55767086
You don't see people chimping out over it because people who hate the single-source silo business concept never switched to Apple. They just stuck with the PC's open ecosystem.

Now they're going to get the mountain brought to them.
>>
>>55767221
I maintain software that's 20 years old. The only reason we use windows machines is due to windows still being able to run this legacy software with minor modifications. If MS decides to kill the legacy appeal then the company will either port or rewrite the software for linux or just cease operations.

The MS direction is worrying. The people that chose UNIX as the platform for their business critical applications did a wise choice. I've maintained software with origins from the 70s that just have been ported BSD in the recent decade.
>>
>>55766413
>pci passthrough
Do you use a kvm switch for your monitor and keyboard? I've been thinking of buying the new Intel EE CPU with 10 cores. Don't feel my 6 cores are enough for the maximum gaymen experience if I dedicate 2 to the host.
>>
>>55768437
Making a Enterprise version with Win32 support for third-party programs and a Home/Pro version without it wouldn't surprise me. They'll make up some bullshit, like Win32 is insecure or old or whatever and you should move to UWP, etc. But that'll take at least 5 years, or more. As you said they depend on Win32, but as you can see W10 has already UWP replacements for old Win32 apps, like Edge instead of IE (if they were able to port an entire browser to UWP there's no technical reason to not move the rest), the new Calculator, the Settings, etc.

They'll leave a subset of Win32 API for non-GUI things and mark GUI-related Win32 functions as deprecated, effectively killing the platform.
>>
>>55767557
>I don't see you bitching over the fact that you can't run 16-bit executables on windows anymore either.
But you still can on 32 bit editions of the OS.
>>
>>55768446
the fact that im running steam/ubuntu or the fact that some games, mainly ones that are ported from windows (borderlands 2 & ps, saints row 3 & 4, trine (esp 2), witcher 2, dead island in my experience) have either lower fps than on windows or some kind of weird bugs (for example euro truck simulator 2 opens in a quarter of fullscreen when fullscreen , only on my laptop, pc is fine). Im not saying linux sucks ass , i love it , but usually the ports are done really badly.
For example amnesia or dota 2 are good ports that run better on linux for me. Terraria is also less buggy than the windows version ,and i believe its some kind of mono port, since it still has .exe files in directory.

Seems far-fetched. It's far more likely that MS will cease to exist for the home market. As a windows phone user the apps promised with the new "just recompile your android and iphone app and it will become UWP" hasn't happened at all. Companies just ignore that platform. It has gone so far I'm just going to switch to lagdroid after being a windows phone/mobile user for over a decade.

But my reasons were somewhat simple:
>Internet download of possibly multiple GB in 2004

>forcing more programs to run on an older computer

this is the worst garbage with the amount of useless and redundant menus. You need a strong CPU as there's a bit of CPU overhead.
I use a KVM to switch between host and guest.
Synergy wouldn't be a bad choice either but my DPI related comfort stuff is windows only.

You can overcommit both RAM and CPU, not without consequences, in KVM

Host gets 8 cores and has to share with the guest, they might fight though, which is why I'm looking into a better CPU.

Audio crackles when my file system makes compression operations on disk read/write and it misses audio calls. I mostly remedy that by decreasing guest process niceness.
It's not bad when the I/O is low but when it maxes, it becomes noticeable.

CPU and RAM are top priority upgrades, GPU is an afterthought, funny enough.
Moar cores are, at long last, necessary and I'm kind of disappointed I only have 8 threads to dedicate.

>CPU and RAM are top priority upgrades, GPU is an afterthought, funny enough.
Just wanted to expand upon this a little more:

>GPU bottleneck
>Average framerate is slightly low / underwhelming

>CPU fighting/ bottleneck
>Framerate dips & stutter with I/O trouble

I'll take a lower average &/or less samples of AA over inconsistent frame times.

I don't get what Tim Sweeney's problem is, Microsoft have already said that UWP games could be released on other platforms like Steam, but despite that, Microsoft would be fucking insane to deprecate the win32 APIs because it's not only games that use them, over 95% of applications running on Windows use those same APIs.

I don't get this black-or-white approach. So I either have complete privacy in the hills of Alaska or I have to give myself in entirely to the botnet? There's no middle-ground?

they can't prove there's any spying going on, just gut feelings and a bunch of blog posts from bloggers who ran wireshark without knowing wtf they were doing.

Your consumer rights, like all digital download stores that don't give you fully DRM free files. However steam invading privacy is horseshit.

It always was viable, that era just saw a lot of paid exclusivity deals. Consoles were seen as way more profitable at the time.

Microsoft is notorious for this though. They embrace an concept someone else has, they inject their propriety shit into it, and they extinguish the concept creator's vision to hijack it as their own.

Good. Fuck valve. They've been forcing their DRM cancer shit harder than any company in the history of software.

To this day I can still give a friend my copy of W95 and they can install it on their VM and mess around in it for kicks. Good fucking luck sharing anything at all with Steam DRM shit infesting everything including retail boxed software.

What type of retard wants to kill the indie gaming community and reduce access to millions of games because of nostalgia?

Seriously, brick and mortar couldn't hold that many CDs and shipping then is less efficient than just sending data via electromagnetic waves, you dumb fuck.

I hope this is bait.

As if UWP could replace Win32.
UWP is the lowest common denominator between desktop PCs, tablets, phones, the fucking Xbone and the Holocaust or whatever it's called.

As a result, it's awkward on all systems and extremely limited. You can make phone quality applications with it, but why would you? You don't want that on your work PC.
Windows Mobile and the Xbone lack the userbase to make it attractive for developers.
Even from a convenience standpoint for developers, it's not any better than WPF.
And WPF at least has good looking results.

You can see how much trouble the edge team is having making a decent looking interface and they're probably in bed with the UWP team.
