I'm gonna be upgrading my computer soon. Should I get Windows 10 even with all the privacy issues, or Windows 8.1 with Classic Shell?
I've not seen anyone in my life need or even clearly benefit from W10. It's had a full year to pull that off and somehow hasn't. 8.1 should suit you just fine.
if your using windows you shouldnt care about privacy

Get Linux Mint, it isnt hard to use, I dont use the terminal at all, it works just as easily as Windows.

I'm going to be gaming a lot however and I hate new things. I know 8.1 is still botnet but less so than 10 at least.

Get 2 SSDs. Install Windows 8.1 on the first drive. Install Ubuntu or Mint on the second drive. Use 2TB mechanical drive for general storage. Always give yourself options.

This is best advice, thanks.

Serious question, in what way does Windows 8.1 have botnet? I don't have any of the Windows 10/telemetry updates installed and I use a local account, and never even touched the built in Store program. Is there anything else I'm unaware of?
I thought the newer version of w8 didn't have the bad start menu :(

Windows is proprietary and owned by a mega corporation, so EVERY VERSION is compromising your security and privacy (from Microsoft). You can avoid updates and disable features all you want, but there's no way to know that you found everything.
If you use any version of Windows, you're implicitly giving Microsoft access to all your data, knowledge of your activities, and basically allowing them to do whatever they want to you within the confines of your computer, including forcibly updating it.
