What are some of the most reliable brands /g/? I haven't bought a HDD in years so I have no idea. I just want a decent one around 1-2 terrabytes that'd last me like another 5 years without failing.
>>
whats a failing hdd? how does it happen? Can u fix it?
>>
>>55748562
There is no HDD brand that will last 5 years guaranteed. Your usage pattern can and does introduce massive variance.
>>
Also how can one make sure he has all his files even if the hdd fails. External storage?
>>
is seagate barracuda 1tb bad? should I go for that or toshiba 2tb? There are no wd theyre out of stock.
>>
>>55748664
Toshiba ones are solid. Go for it.
>>
Anything except seagate is good this days.
Try to get a 240GB SSD while doing it if you dont have one.

>>55748636
My 600GB WD Blue says hi.
>>
What does /g/ think of hitatchi?
>>
Ive had 3 hgst laptop drives fail within a year of ownership, and supposedly they're the toppest notch of reliability. Never again.
>>
>>55750500
This honestly sounds like you treat your stuff like crap.

I have a 4tb hgst drive in my pc which is awesome. All my other drives are wd.
>>
>>55748562
Western Digital Red or Black (3 years warranty, 5 years warranty)
>>
Just get any enterprise drive, they will outlast pretty much all consumer drives. I got a WD SE and its a beast.
>>
I will confess that I got a 1TB seagate in 2011, and after heavy usage it's still perfectly fine (*knocks on wood*). I now use it as my secondary drive for all my media now I bought a meme 500gb samsung ssd.

But if you want a sure quality hdd, you only have one brand: HGST. You pay more, but you get what you pay for. Seagate is cheap so quality is a lottery (althought it was mostly their 3gb HDD's that where pure crap.).

Toshiba is kinda hit or miss depending on the model I believe. Same issue as with WD, some models are suppost to be secondary drives that get less activity and shut down in those periodes. So running them constantly kills them crazy fast.).

do you know the toshiba models that are good?

The best consumer drives are seagates, the best enterprise drives are HGST
>>
>>55748562
i use wd black 1tb, it has 5 years warranty. if it breaks they even recover your data for you.
>>
>>55750046
I recently got a 1TB 2.5" Hitachi. It's a bit louder than my old seagate and not very fast by modern standards. I'm a bit suspicious that it will fail because it makes weird noises and a couple of my transfers hung. We'll see, whatever.

All the people here saying
>muh hard drive broke therefore that brand is meme shit
are best ignored.
Look at warranty periods and customer service.
If you're worried about losing data, make sure you backup frequently.
>>
>>55750046
my macbook from 2009 had a Hitachi drive in it and it died in 2 years
>>
>>55753730
after what amount of time is that graph showing? of course there will be more 2016 models still working compared to 2014 models.
>>
What size is best right now? I think going over 2TB used to see a big drop in reliability, what's the drop off point now?
>>
Outside of a reputable brand you need to make sure the conditions the drive is in are acceptable as well. Make sure the fans are working and the room has A/C. Check every once in a while for dust and get a temperature monitor. Every time I see hard drive failure it's in some shitty closet and like 80C, drive brand isn't going to matter there.

I have a 5gb drive from decades ago that still works
Its kept under a dryer and is fossilized in dust

They really dont make disks as hard as this anymore

I don't know if you're pretending to be retarded or actually retarded, but WD blue does not have a failure rate of 0% within 5 years. That is statistically impossible.
