Newb here
What linux distro should I install? I'll be honest I want something that "just werks" to begin with, but I've heard some negative commentary of Ubuntu; would there be a next-best option?

Yup, Gentoo
Linux Mint
>just werks
>you can still learn a lot about linoox
>interface not much different from winblows meaning not much of a learning curve

xubuntu is better than "regular" ubuntu
arch or kys

I started on Ubuntu and from there moved to Xubuntu. Though, as >>55748265 said, Linux Mint has an easier learning curve.

Arch w/ Ratpoison or gtfo
Linux Mint
Does Mint still bundle non-free components with the installation ?

Bump for Interest
I'd recommend Fedora. It justwerks and it leaves room for the user to learn new things and make use of new skills, unlike Ubuntu which only appeals to beginners.
If you don't want Gnome there are different "spins" which are just Fedora with a different DE.
Are there any distros with better than average available software?
I am running a Mint iso on VM. I tried MATE and Cinnamon.
It is a good ditsro so far.
