They have a purpose and fulfill their need.
You don't need a tower for most office tasks.

They're fine for cubicle rats and pencil pushers. But if a company forced me to use one of those as dev I'd resign at the spot.
They started doing this at Uni.
It gave me the shits first, but now I don't mind it.
The thing is the machines they are fed by are riced to the teeth.
Fuckloads of memory, tonnes of processor power, etc.
I compiled firefox in literally no time.
I thought GCC was broke until I realised that it worked, it was just super fast.

Thin clients are only a problem if the network or backend driving them is shit. If they've got good hardware behind them, they're fine for typical office tasks.
