Hey remember me?

I did.
Don't romanticize it, it was like living in horse and buggy days. Everything took forever to do.
>>

it was pretty cool desu, dialing into a bbs from windows 3.1 was something special

Any old 8i3 d00dz hang out here? Used to be a good amount of boards in mid 90's (back when that area code covered most of the bay area). I even had to get a second phone line because I was monopolizing the house phone so much. I went to some local 2600 meetings too, but mostly it was just people shooting the shit, didn't really learn anything there. It was cool to meet some of the local BBS peeps though. Typically those events were scheduled at some random mall food court, but one time we had a picnic in local park.

Partial list of old local boards:

textfiles.com archives all that old BBS stuff. If it's warez they might not take it though, but archive.org probably would.

Fuck Jason Scott and textfiles too

I did too, and I miss it. It was slow, but there was a certain magic about it, especially BBSes. Imagine being a kid in the early 90s, reading about BBSes in your dad's computer mags and then one day he brings home a modem from work and you find a local BBS and dial it up for the first time. It was magic.

People take 24/7 internet for granted now, but being one of the first to go online when half of your friends didn't even use computers, it was so cool.

Yeah the Internet has really become shit. It was pretty fun in the 90's though, but that's before it went totally mainstream and centralized Web 2.0 shits.

The BBS days were magic because every system was indenpendent and self-contained, with its own distinct personality. Well some had FidoNet feed but it was more like a separate conference from the rest of the BBS.
And you had to find all those systems by yourself. Maybe you'd see someone advertise a cool-sounding BBS on a board you frequented, and you called it, just to see. Never knew what to expect, because software like Renegade could be configured in many different ways, and there were lots of different BBS softwares.
I used to call local X.25 pads too, and fuck around to see what systems I could log onto. That was before all the security/hacking crackdowns, when lots of stuff was wide open. Between that and the early Internet experience, it really felt like a virtual wild west!

>a certain magic about it
It had a ritual, just like vinyl records did. Objectively we've moved on to better ways of doing everything, but the ritual was comfortable. That's what you miss.

> every system was indenpendent and self-contained, with its own distinct personality.

I've heard people say this about BBS, IRC, Usenet, geocities and lately, Myspace.

My conclusion? Allofthem were just as shit and nostalgia is a fucking narcotic.
