Basically I've decided to learn programming and have realized something about how I learn.
I fully understand the concepts and syntax, but when it comes down to writing actual code I struggle and feel really stuck.
Did anyone else experience this when learning and how did they overcome it?
Also is this something that is happening because I am retarded?
I am wiling to put in the time to learn but maybe I am just not cut out for programming.
Thanks
What are you trying to create, anon?

Analyze what you're trying to make, and plan out what concepts you'll be using and how for each step.
Sounds cheesy but it's flawless when done correctly.

I'm doing an online course and just challenge questions like implementing composition/inheritance.
I'm just wondering if anyone here ever felt the same struggle as I am right now.

Reading books on coding gives you recognition/recall which is different than problem solving. That's why it's important to practice by solving a problem -- you learn a lot about what you don't know and learn as you solve the problem.
As for the design principals, the best way to learn is by making mistakes. When you try going down one path and realize it becomes unreasonably difficult -- you start to realize why those patterns exist and what problems they solve.
