Budget: Nothing over 1k
Looking for a solid laptop that's going to last. Not a gamer. Need it for business and pleasure. Portability is key. Not tied to mac or windows. Superb movie watching experience and great battery life is what I'm after.

Increase your budget, find a college student to extend you the discount and get a 13 inch Retina Macbook Pro.

Just to be clear, we're talking about the newest release, correct?

Well Fall 2012 was when the 13" Retinas came out. There's a slightly larger battery on the most recent (late 2015) models though.

13" Macbook pro is over 3.3lbs. Heavy man.. The retina macbook is around 2lbs
>>55721607
3.3 lbs isn't heavy at all. I carry a 3.4 lbs laptop and can't even feel it in the bag. You're comparing numbers for human perception which is literally the dumbest thing ever. See: sound volume controls.

Asus UX303UA. Get the 1080p model.

Don't get the non retina macbook. It's like the 16GB iphone and probably shouldn't even exist at this point. The thing has a HDD and is sluggish as hell next to an identical machine with SSD.
Thank you everyone. Any other opinions? As of now, I plan on pricing the 13 inch retina pro with the student discount.

Get a brand new 1080p XPS 13 with an i5 on ebay easily less than 1k or get an i7 XPS 13 with a 3k screen at the same size of an 11" macbook for around 1200... Your choice.

It sounds an awful lot like you want a Thinkpad. Maybe a T460s or X1 Carbon.
