How can you autistic people even use such an underwhelming and downright useless OS is beyond me.

Maybe you should learn how to Google, or use something else than Arch if you can't use it.

Yeah, sure. 15 years ago you could make that argument. Linux wasn't meant for end-users. Shit changed. Now it's an extremely viable OS. You're part of the problem.

Almost all your statements are wrong. Yes, linux has its problems, but what you've listed is nothing really important.

The thing I really like about Linux, is that the system is made for work with text files, so any text-related work does Linux far more better than Windows.

Another one is bash, which makes everything so much easier.

And lastly, it has great support for C language.

That's all I could ever dream of.

This. That's an argument for manchild gamers. If I would need to use Photoshop I would just use Windows or Mac (probably the second)
>>
>>55717116
What do you mean it 'needs' the 'whereis' command? I have never used that command. If you want to know more about the file hierarchy you can use man or gnu info. (gnu info lets you browse various pages via links within itself so it's better if you don't have an exact page in mind, it also starts at the outermost subjects if you run it without arguments)

What are you comparing it to when you say it's a mess, though? It makes a lot of sense and everything but Windows uses it. I can tell you from personal experience growing up on Windows that Windows in general is a lot harder to use, and it rarely makes sense where stuff is.
>>
>>55717132
Sorry if I came off that way. Technology as a word has a very broad definition. It can be abused to have threads about things like pencils, when really I think this board is more about computers. The OS that was forced on you and your family when you were little that you grew up using doesn't really seem like technology. I can understand discussing it on /v/, not because it is a video game, but because a large portion of people still using Windows 'willingly' play a lot of video games. I also play a lot of video games, however I only use GNU/Linux. The difference between myself and these other people is that they aren't willing to make any sacrifices to improve their QoL if it means even one less game in their library, whether or not they actually planned to play that game.

I don't know what each is for, but I also rarely need to use most of them. Keep in mind that this is the unix file hierarchy, not the GNU one, so a lot of this stuff changes over time. For example, another anon said he didn't know what /opt/ is for. My brother told me that his company's software installs there, however using GNU/Linux on the desktop, I haven't really had to put anything there. A lot of uses have changed now.

>Also, why just 3 letters? This ain't the 60s anymore. Get with times, Linux devs.
So.. you want to type more? Man pages should tell you what everything is a shortening of if that's all you want, and you could probably make aliases or symlinks that let you type the longer names. It's more common for sysadmins to want to shorten things than lengthen them, honestly. unix stuff is all just a few letters generally, but a lot of GNU stuff (e.g. GNU style command arguments) is longer.

Some programs have -r and --recursive doing the same thing. I'd rather type -r. If I use the program regularly, I will remember what it does. If not, I can check the man page, even without Internet. I don't really seem to have these major issues you think you have. Do you actually use a unix-like system? It's a pleasant experience. I'd even go as far as to say it's very fun.
>>
>>55717351
so you admit yet you've never maintained even a simple linux based system...

The only messy thing about that is PulseAudio. The rest of the diagram would look the same for any other operating system. Most of those are just cross-platform libraries for audio output. And Allegro and SDL on that diagram are just cross-platform game / multimedia libraries.

You can ignore most of what's on that diagram, such as OSS (not a thing any more unless you use FreeBSD or something) and you can ignore JACK unless you're doing some fancy audio recording stuff. This diagram in practice can be simplified to:

(optional cross platform audio library) -> ALSA -> sound card

or:

(optional cross platform audio library) -> PulseAudio -> ALSA -> sound card

So it's not actually any more or less complicated than Windows or OS X.

Its a time-sink OS which gives autistic NEETs a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day when they do a common task in an extremely long-winded way.

Linux is for special applications and uses, you're not supposed to make it run like a home OS on a main machine, that's fucking retarded unless you have some very very specific preferences, autism basically, which Windows or even MacOS could not give you.

Even the normified Linux distros are a bad idea, have some self respect and use the best personal OS which exists, that being MacOS. Use Windows if you're a gaymur.
>>
>>55717629
All of these arguments come down to: "Linux is not the exact clone of a consumer OS I'm used to". Well, no shit, it's a clone of fucking UNIX, with all of its advantages and disadvantages. Some people choose to use it because they need the advantages more than they need to play games. Hell, they're even OK with spending their time configuring shit just to get them. If you're priorities are different, just use Windows and fuck off.

Instead, you choose to be a little faggot that goes: "18-wheel trucks suck because they guzzle fuel and finding a parking spot to pick up a kid from school is a nightmare", then calls people sour grapes when they tell you that schoolkids is not what they fucking transport with their trucks.

op is different though, they are a fag and deserve to be ridiculed.

yotldesktop is a meme and everyone knows it. linux is for work.

dont shit where you eat and dont play where you work

it's basic
>>
If you're trying to use office software, LibreOffice and OpenOffice sometimes write files that display differently in Microsoft Office despite being written on its format. In a work environment where you can't take this risk you have to use Microsoft Office to meet the industry standard, so you can't use Linux there.

If your job requires you to use specialized software you're fucked because you can't do that on Linux. If you work with Autocad, none of the 100 clones is as powerful, no matter if they're cheap, free, or open; you just can't compare Autocad to any of its clones. If you work with After Effects the situation is the same. If you work with Photoshop, GIMP is a nice attempt at replacing it but it can't really do everything that Photoshop can as simply as Photoshop does, so for anyone who values their times it's not viable to work with GIMP instead of Photoshop in a professional environment.

Open drivers are inferior. Sure generic drivers -Windows has those too- can control lots of stuff just fine, but they can't replace advanced functions that proprietary drivers have. If I buy a printer and a scanner the open drivers are good enough to print and scan, but if you want to know how much ink there's left or use the 'scan to PDF' feature, most of the time you're out of luck; in Windows you don't have this problem because you have proprietary drivers developed specifically for that device. Now consider that printers and scanners are very common software, and that the mentioned features are common and very practical too; this is the kind of thing that you want in an office environment, but in Linux you don't get to have it. The problem only becomes worse with less common hardware.

The kernel is a steaming piece of shit and the people who maintain it are lazy and incompetent. To be honest they're doing it for free and they have other stuff to do, so you can't really blame them. If I had to choose a single fault in the kernel to illustrate how inferior it is, it would be the fact that it can't recover from audio or video driver crashes. This is a problem that happens exclusively with Linux and that other operating systems fixed almost fifteen years ago; let that sink in, Linux has problems that in everything else were eradicated over a decade ago. Surely it will be fixed soon right? According to developers ISSUE_WILL_NOT_BE_FIXED, so it won't stop being shit anytime soon. This and other problems and how hard it is to fix them are things that stem from the kernel being monolithic, which by 1989 already was considered an obsolete design, but that didn't stop Linus from writing it that way. It has been shit from the beginning.

>inb4 this is all fault of the software developers for not making their programs for Linux

I don't give a fuck who is to blame or if poor Linux din du nuffin; if I have to choose between an OS that has great support for software and drivers and an OS that supports only subpar software and drivers I will pick the first one. For any kind of workplace, where you require reliable systems so people can keep working, Linux just lacks a lot of the things needed to replace Windows. At the end of the day the superior OS is the one with practical applications.

>inb4 Linux is used in most of servers and in virtually all the supercomputers

You're not running a server or a supercomputer retard. Linux is great as long as you don't need hardware or application software or a GUI; in real life you need those things to do anything everywhere.

I'm just tired of having the same fucking threads over and over. Fucking Reddit cancer posting the same generals and OS wars everyfuckingday is getting extremely fucking old.

TLDR: As a person who has been using Linux for 22 years I can really tell you that it's shit for pretty much any kind of real work. If you want something cool for personal use, I advise you to use BSD instead; it has the same support issues but a superior kernel. Just look at this thread with 24 poster and 109 replies, yet not a single intelligent post; I can tell that even the people on the Linux side don't know shit about Linux. You are all retards.

Was forced to learn it in uni and now I prefer linux even though I do google shit a lot just to get stuff to work.

I prefer windows for my workstations and general productivity, but I highly prefer linux for server-related machines and tasks due to how much faster working in the terminal is compared to slow ass GUI taking forever to load and shit.

Tried linux before uni and disliked it immensly.
