If you've got a computer with enough CPU and RAM to run two virtual machines at the same time, here's a good practice.

Spin up a VM with the Metasploitable image, which is basically an operating system image that's out of date and full of vulnerabilities on purpose.

Spin up another VM with Kali Linux or Arch Assault, whatever other pentesting Linux distro or tool suite that you might prefer, and just find the vulnerabilities of the Metasploitable VM and attack it. Do it until you've run out of attacks or vulnerabilities.

Then research attacks others have done using the same method, try those, figure out why you missed them or what stopped you from attacking them.

There's no magic involved in hacking, once you understand how computers work, you will be able to figure out exactly how a certain piece of hardware or software works, figure out the weaknesses, and you might be able to write your own program that exploits these weaknesses.

It's a lot harder to do nowadays because we're past the "oh shit computers are new and exciting phase" and a fuckton of work has been done to secure computers, so you'll have a lot more to study to be able to do simple hacking. The only exception here is if you're able to exploit human stupidity, then that would be the minimum effort required to hack.

As an industry person, I would ask that you please dont do this. Get a job as an admin first to get the understandings ofhow technologies work, how to integrate them, and how to secure them. Then when you are tired of that, look at moving into security.

Pen tests are not people writing exploits on site, its about abusing the configuration as it is. Sure, you might come across something exploitable along the way, but if you spent a 1 week engagement fuzzing an application you didnt do your job. For the sake of argument, lets say that you do find a bug, and exploit it. CIO/CTO/CISO don't care if there is no mitigation (in my experience). Sure, they will want the vendor to patch it, but thats one small piece of the puzzle.
