I didn't mean a small school isn't worth going to, I meant one that isn't among the best. There are very high-ranking small schools.
>>
>>55701094
Meh. I mean if you want to laugh, go ahead. I like my specialization.

Also name me one school on that list that actually qualifies as small
>>
>>55701061
>years of my life for no gain in earnings
your ignorance is frankly revolting
I did a fast-track to a MSc in 4 years (one internship and one session per summer) and my PhD program is accelerated and condensed into 2 years, and my university is infamous for hiring its own students as professors.
6 years for 150-300k. I wouldn't call that "throwing away years of my life for no gain in earnings"
>>
>>55701149
>wanting to work as a professor
Another PhD student here, why would you even want to do that, unless you get tenure (protip: you don't)

My university is infamous for letting PhD students turn their thesis work into start-up companies and investing into them
>>
>Penn State
>25

I can live with that. Starting there this fall, and I'm pretty excited.
>>
>>55701178
I didn't want to but once I started working more closely with professors and doing my TA hours, I found that I really liked it and the freedom it allowed. It's good money and you run your own show. I spoken to a lot of them about it, and they said the only real downside is that you basically can't stop researching ever and until you're a full tenured professor you have to keep one-upping everyone to try to prove your stay is worthwhile. Once you're moving up in the ranks though you're GOLDEN.

doubt that. thesis masters takes that long.
>>
>>55701219
>TAing
I'm so glad I don't have to do this as part of my PhD.

Well, the post-docs I've spoken to -- that is, the ones that aren't let go after their first month because they were unable to find fundings to their own position -- basically tells me that they spend more time hunting for fundings and sucking up to people than actual research.

The whole institute is like this, sure we get some direct funding from the state, but that all goes into admin for some reason, the researchers have to find their own funding.

I'm disillusioned with the whole academia thing, and I'm going back into the industry afterwards,.
>>
>>55701239
Technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. To say math applied to ideas that are used in computation isn't technology you have a very weird definition of the word practical.

That doesn't sound fun man. Where I go to university things seem to be a little better than that. I've worked on my own and other professor's national grants, so I might be spoiled right now, but searching for funding does seem like it'll take time and effort.

stanford student here (grad school). usually i see stanford and MIT battling it out. i'd say it's a toss up.

more to the point, i went to a university outside of the top 30 for my undergrad and my sense from all the top 10 schools is that you're definitely not saturating the metaphorical "bandwidth for opportunity" that you get when you attend these places. if you're not crushing it, that's your fault. it's not because you went to #6 instead of #2 or something.

the only possible exception to this is if you're looking for a very very specific research area that basically nobody else is interested in at the university you went to. but in your undergrad your academic career doesn't specialize that much, and if you manage to go to the wrong university in grad school under that criteria, i don't know what's wrong with you but something definitely is.

There's no such thing as a shit tier school, only a shit tier student who doesn't have the idea or willpower to frequent libraries and take out everything they can find related to the mandatory books and their content,
and churn that up like a motherfucker. Or even scour the Internet for any and all research and design papers instead of browsing 4chan.
All the top Universities have produced trash and mental retards. The funny thing is that the only badge of honor those trash retards have is attending a top school, yet in the end they went out more worthless than some graduates of the cheapest shittiest Unis.

Don't forget, there is an 11 year old boy who has learned how to describe motherboard repair diagnostics in a more fluent and rational way than a good portion of fucking STEM graduates, as evidenced by Rossman, just for an examp.

1) there are definitely shit tier schools. the range /g/ makes up is just not nearly as dichotomous as they want anyone to believe (universities outside of the top 10 are not intellectually barren wastelands of drooling retards).
2) the libraries point is idiotic. that's a given whether you go to a university or not. public libraries are available to anyone in any of the countries that are represented at all on the list in the OP's link.
3) the variance of top universities is much, much lower than worse universities. there are bright people everywhere, and certainly there are idiots everywhere, but the chances of accidentally selecting an idiot from a university ranked 1-10 are lower than doing the same from a university ranked 91-100.

true, if you employ any intelligent filtering (like an interview where you check if this guy is a retard or not), you should be able to catch retards at any level, but the point is that you can spend less time reading someone's resume and skip right to that sanity check if they say they graduated from CMU or MIT.

You'd be amazed how many students just go with the school book and class lessons, and don't do shit beyond that.

I'd imagine that at Stanford it's easier to glean cutting-edge knowledge from the faculty than from a school not in the top 30. I did my undergrad there and found it difficult to avoid learning every professor's opinions regarding emerging topics in CS. It was pretty much crammed down our throats.

While a highly motivated individual from a less prestigious school could learn the same exact information by searching for it, it wouldn't have fallen in his or her lap.

What are you specializing in, if I may ask?
>>
>>55700930
this
>>
>>55705749
lots of people don't take advantage of libraries, but that's a different point from assessing the quality of a university. that's more to the point i made in >>55705443 that there's almost no chance you're "saturating the bandwidth" you get, because (credit to your point) students are almost certainly not fully exploiting the value of things like access to every journal and conference publication worth anything.

as for the cheating question, i saw an enormous amount of cheating at my undergrad university, especially in bio where we were apparently pretty competitive for aspiring pre-med students. any highly competitive environment is going to have somewhat common and sometimes serious cheating concerns. i couldn't speak to MIT's cheating issues though.

>>55705765
i think people underestimate how accessible researchers at other universities are if you're willing to email, be polite, and be concise. my advisor is busy but he makes an effort to collaborate with people outside the university and certainly to respond to them. he forwards me stuff from other faculty all the time (my academic background makes it easier for me to do collaborations across disciplines - i can't say much more without identifying myself, sorry)

it's true that things seem to fall into the laps of stanford students, a lot of it seems to be that stanford students have been taught (before arriving) that tons of opportunities exist if you know how and where to look. at my undergrad a lot of students just didn't really realize that scholarships and grants and other shit were just sitting around waiting for them, and sometimes these things would go without any winners or would go to the 1 person who applied for it.

i don't know if i feel comfortable saying my sub-area, because it's small enough that i suspect people could identify me. sorry

> will let anyone in the first year for money so a fuck ton of kids to weed out.

I was accepted into cs but to really get into cs had to get an average of 74% in two csc classes purposefully created to weed out kids

> massive student population without enough faculty

I'm currently getting shafted in course selection due to not enough classes so upper years end up having to take lower year courses and fucking over lower years
