If you're on an AM3 socket (not an AM3+), then you'll have to upgrade your mobo anyway, so you may as well make the jump to skylake. Intel is beating the everloving dogshit out of AMD right now as far as CPUs.

I've been thinking of rolling with the establishment so to speak, intel.nvidia.
Is there any significant advantage or detriment for AMD? Most games I play support the aforementioned establishment options.

Price. As I said you can upgrade to a modern midrange PC for mere ~$150

Now let's see your option - i5 4670 - $230, a Z series mobo with a decent VRM - $150. Since nvidia has a shorter lifespan I'd recommend you to get a 1060, that's another $259.

Nope. I can play way more graphically intensive games just fine. I run far cry 4 on a high-ultra hybrid set with consistent 50-60 fps.
Further, my framerate of like 40-20 in PS2 stays that way regardless of any settings. I run it at that speed on the lowest setting and INI file forced ultra.
