So yeah I bought one of these in a sale mainly for gaming.
They'll arrive next week and now I am wondering if an AMP is really required. I've heard the K612 Pro (120 Ohms) are working on ordinary onboard soundcards, however pretty low volume and no word about audio quality.

The K702 here have 62 Ohms and I got a Realtek ALC1150 onboard which is supposed to be one of the best onboard-soundcards on gaming mobos.

Will this work decently? Beacuse I'm pretty much out of money now.
>>
>>55687440
Yeah your mobo should drive them loud enough. I can listen to them quite loud even on my PC, which has a shitty Realtek ALC 272.
>>
So I have this headset, Steelseries Siberia V3.
Out of pure curiosity, how would you guys rate it?

I'm using it for gaming, listening to music, watching stuff, etc.
It's easily the comfiest shit ever, but I'm just wondering if you guys hate/love it or something.
>>
How should I know if I need something better than my onboard sound card to drive specific headphones?

I'm just saying because when I raise the volume just high enough, shit gets flattened and there's some slight crackling that gets kind of annoying. The way I have to solve this is to use a lower volume.

Nope, they are pretty Mid-bass heavy, but you can fix that with an EQ and that's assuming you don't want bassy in the first place.
Otherwise it's a a great option, built like a tank (literal military grade), detachable cables, carrying case, you can even custom shields for it if you want a more unique look.

>>55687440
AKG K7XX series headphones work out to be 93 dB/mW which is quite inefficient. They do need a good amplifier to drive them, they might get loud enough (barely) through motherboard audio but do yourself a favour and get proper amplification. Even nwavguy has stated this in his blogs about these headphones being hard to drive...

So I just got these from ebay, and damn are they fucking good. I was blown away by the CAL when I got them a few weeks back, not just because of the sound but because of the value. These are even better. In fact it's fair to say they're just a great overall headphone and beat the CAL in every way unless you really love that bassy, warm fostex sound. The going is twice as much as the CAL at $100 but you can find them for much cheaper on ebay, ~$60. It comes with a really nice hard case and 2 cables with a little net for them inside. This headphone is still warm like the CAL, just much less so, reminds me of the hp50. They're incredibly even from the sub bass through the mids, and it's the mids that shine here, though the bass is quite good as well. the highs are clear but polite. biggest problem is a pronounced dip in the highs, but if you like warm it won't bother you. This is also the fist closed portable that is "audiophile-friendly" without being obscenely priced imo.

cont:

it does everything a portable should do: It folds nicely into it's case, with enough room for cables, some IEMs, even small DAP too. Comfort is great, the beats-ripoff design is done very well, it doesn't feel cheap at all and there are even metal elements. All the padding is very soft, including the earpads. No hot spots here. Isolation is above-average as well. You may have heard Tyll praising the Zoro II HD many times. this is it's over-ear cousin, just less warm, not as rolled off in the highs.

>>55697039
Genre is pretty irrelevant here but I listen to a wide range of things, generally things like pop, rock and classical. This is ultimately >opinions but to me they sometimes sound dull compared to more bass heavy or bright in ears. However, overall, the word I can use to explain them is "clean", everything sounds right with them whereas other in ears I tried would be good at x but bad at y.

There is a mod you can do that doesn't seem to be documented well. Under the pads is a thin foam disk, and then some fabric pad stickers over 2 vents (per driver). Remove those and the clarity of the upper mids and highs increases noticeably. It doesn't get brighter, just sounds less closed and congested, it gives more of that detail you expect from an expensive headphone. Getting the pads on and off is a real bitch though, you basically have to get the lip into a tiny groove that you kind of have to hold open with your nail or use it to shove the lip in. They still sound good without the mod, the highs are just more muted.

I think I have found my perfect portable (though they are gaudy). They do so much right that other portables fail at. I was using an ue6000 for portable use, and while it is great the fit can be tricky and this is just better. Even at $100 I think this is as good if not better than the m40x and xpt-100. v6 still beats it but then that's the v6.
>>
>>55697121

most IEMs do that. if you can't hear your surroundings but you can hear the music well that means you have a good seal which is what you want. if it's comfortable then you're fine. if you want IEMs that don't isolate that much try shallow-fit and avoid foam. the piston 3 sounds like an open headphone IEM, very little isolation.

could be the headphones themselves or the amp in your mobo. if it's the headphones, there's little you can do about it. if it's your mobo, your could get an external amp.
if you share the sound files, i can give them a listen to make sure the distortion is not in the recordings.

>>
>>55703381
>>55703110
I'm not the guy you're replying to, but I think that it's important to explain some things. HD600 may be better than K702 out of the box, but this is mostly a subjective matter and HD600 isn't "perfect" after all. Through a careful equalization the K702 can be turned into neutral pretty easily, even though it's cheaper than the HD600. HD600 has its own problems as well: quite steep bass roll-off (even more than the K702 according to most sources), bit too much low mids and a hump around 3-4 kHz which some people may find annoying. The fact that you prefered your HD600 over the K702 doesn't automatically make K702 shit and HD600 Goddess-like.
>>
>>55703552
I bought my hd600's because one side of my 702's died for no fucking reason. I opened them up and had to solder a wire back myself. I sold those pieces of shit on ebay asap and they're probably stronger now then when I got them.

Part of the reasons why K702 may sound worse for listening to music is due to its treble resonance. I fixed this problem with equalization. Since I also raised the sub-bass, my K702 now sounds much "fuller" lik you say.

Uneveness in upper high range. Fact is, they hardly translate negatively to the sound. Low end and mids are very similar to HD600.
>>
>>55703722
Analytical is a meme buzzword, fact is, HD600 is more neutral. Lets leave it at that. If I were to need a headphone for critical listening and I had the choice between HD600 and K702, I'd pick the HD600 every time.
>>55703736

Go listen to some relatively neutral speakers like nearfield monitors in a decent room. Come back and tell me how they're emphasized at 3-4kHz.

>>
>>55703736
I did all those things with my 702's before one side of them broke. They still didn't sound anything like the 600's. You can't copy sound properly using an eq and a shit amp despite what the penny pinchers on /hpg/ will tell you.

I loved my 702's but they broke. So I tried 600's from amazon (so i could send them back hassle free) and I ended up keeping them even though they cost a lot more. They're better. My brother still had his 702's and we compared them and the 702's sounded shit besides being slightly more analytical.

Do you really believe that amps improve the sound of a headphone? Amps just increase volume.

Like I said before, even though HD600 may be better, aka more neutral, thna K702 out of the box, it still needs some tweakings as well.

>Like I said before, even though HD600 may be better, aka more neutral, thna K702 out of the box, it still needs some tweakings as well.
Only the bass needs tweaking, the mids and highs are excellent.
>>

what does warm bass sound like?
>>
>>55703906
APO equalzer yes. It improved them but they still didn't sound the same as the hd600, otherwise people would just buy the fucking 702 and eq those instead.

The hd600's are the most natural sounding headphone i've ever tried, that's the best and easiest way to explain it.

Not sure if trolling, but thick sounding lower midrange and mid bass, think 200Hz to 500Hz. It gives the headphone a sort of mid-bass oriented sound. Yes, despite the super flat bass response, the rest of the spectrum isn't flat so they don't sound flat. Similar to LCD-2, if anyone has heard one they sound a bit mid-bassy.

How do I pound this idea into people's heads?
Audio circuits don't work like computer upgrades. Unlike swapping out a Celeron for a 6700k and [top discrete GPU model], you can't just drop in new op-amps and converter chips and expect better audio performance. Every part of the circuit must be worked over carefully, both in the circuit model and the physical layout, every bit of wire or component a potential liability.

Check to see if any nearby stores will let you try different headphones. Alternatively start from filling out the form and we can suggest a starting headphone.

Just to let you know the differences in sound are relatively small even with expensive headphones and amps etc.

The differences only become clear when you care to understand them, and then you spend money, then a lot f money.

Honestly m8 don't even bother. Dtay blue pilled and enjoy cheap iem's etc like we all have at some point. Leave the thread for your own good. I'm not even joiking.

Hard to say as there is variance between mobo to mobo. Won't know if you'll need an amp. I expect you've already tried out the audio jack and haven't noticed any his or interference that would indicate the need of a DAC as well.

668b is great... after some eq and new pads... and a bit of headband bending. It's a great into into audiophile open headphones. the fit is not amazingly perfect like a 598 though, it's not bad, it's not uncomfortable, but you're kind of always aware it's on your head even after the mods. as for pads try the hifiman velours, beyers (too expensive) or generic chinese velours.
>>
>>55698929
the 702 is not even that hungry, you can get it loud off a phone. the k612 is AKG's hungriest headphone iirc.
>>
>>55700103
no, that's just the 598. it's bass light, even compared to most other open headphones. boost with eq, though that won't change the light impact. it's not ad700 nobass but it's not prominent either.

Semi-related question:
My Schiit Magni just crapped out on me so I'm looking to revamp my desktop audio setup. I've always used my monitor's built-in speakers when watching motives etc and used my headset when I'm actually at my desk playing/listening to music.

I'm looking to get some good bookshelf speakers but my problem is driving them while also driving my headphones. I don't want to have separate headphone and speaker amplifiers cluttering up my desk. Is there any way to do this without just getting a legit fatass integrated amplifier? I'd rather not clutter up my desk or have to buy shelving specifically for one of those monstrosities.

I suppose I could do Schiit Modi + Magni + Lepy? Or since my Modi still works I can suck it up and use that with an integrated receiver and have the option of adding a sub later.

HD600's on sale for $325AUD, do i do it?
>>
>>55712241
It's been that price at A2A and Store DJ for quite a while.
One of the main arguments people use against the HD600 is that they are more expensive than the K702 but here, they are about the same price. The main difference is that the K702 gets a 50AUD markup and the HD600 is 125AUD cheaper, according to US amazon prices. So as far as price is concerned, sure, as long as you know what you're getting into.

I don't understand your problem. if your headphones work out of one analog out and not another the problem is your playback device. are you on a PC? have you tested on another player? sometimes you have to assign a port as headphone out in the drivers to activate it or change from line out. try the front port.

my speakers work, my headphones work on my cellphone, when I plug them in the laptop the speakers are turned off but no sound comes. I got only one port for headphones... guys I need some srs help
everyone says the noctua sedan memephones are the comfiest headphones to ever exist, but I find the headband putting a lot of pressure on my head and the velour feels stiff. how do I fix this? I don't want some non-poo coloured aftermarket ear pads. Do I have to "break in" the headband? etc.
>>
How the fuck do I get rid of the constant creaking in my MSR7's? I love everything else about them but this is shit.
>>
>>55713353
check drivers, see if it's assigned as headphone, see if it actually disables headphones and enables speakers in realtime when you switch. make sure there is no headphone volume that is all the way down or muted. go into control panel and make sure the headphone out is not disabled as an output device.

but yeah your jack is probably fucked. buy a cheap usb dac/amp or go bluetooth.
>>
>>55713449
the headphones don't even show up as a device. only the speakers. they don't show up at the playback device list, even with the option "show disabled/unplugged devices"

how the fuck did the jack break? jesus christ
>>
>>55713356
sure they're not fakes? feels fine to me. but if there is a way to reduce/eliminate headband hot-spots it's to bend it to increase weight distribution and/or add padding to the area where the spot is. also try wearing them looser. you can't really bend the 598, it's all plastic and doesn't have an internal metal piece as far as I know.

>>55713439
creaking from the moving bits? I guess wiggle them and loosen/tighten screws if you can. if there is an exposed moving element you might even be able to apply oil or something. I usually sit still enough that creaking and such don't bother me.

>>55713491
if it doesn't appear as a separate device your only hope is drivers. it might have some stupid internal switching that failed because they speakers and headphone out run on the same amp? jacks usually fail from strain, though it more often happen with the male end since it moves much more.

>>55713512

I'm looking for new IEMs
Budget - 50~75 dollars
Source - Phone, Nexus 5
Preferred type - IEMs, definitely
Comfort level - Don't have to be the most comfortable and give up on a lot of sound quality, but comfort is pretty important. A balance would be nice if needed.
Preferred tonal balance - Don't mind either, I like many different types of music. But honestly I also use it for a lot of Youtube, so if things could be clear in terms of vocals that'd be nice. Also I'm a bit tired of low-volume earphones, that's a criteria I mind.
Past headphones - I had the Sennheiser CX 3.00 but after just a few months they already had an issue where some sound ranges just couldn't be heard, vocals were so quiet and all sound was distorted.
I want something a bit durable if possible, but I take good care of them so no need to emphasize that too much.
In terms of sound quality I was pretty happy with those, as well as the Sennheiser CX300 II, they just broke over time so I'm looking for suggestions.
tl;dr - past headphones were Sennehsier CX 3.00 and CX 300 II, liked em both but broke over time, looking for something new.

>>55713889
Get a dirt cheap pair of ear buds and see if shit works, if not chances are you 3.5mm jack is borked. If they work then your headphones may be at fault.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling your sound card driver could be a weird driver issue.

Try plugging in an external mic as well and see if that works if you have one handy.

This sounds stupid , but another testing trick if you happen to have a of 3.5mm to 3.5mm male to male cable lying around is to plug in both mic and headphone jacks then go to your playback and recording devices settings and set your primary playback device to line out and set line in to "listen to device".

Then just play music or whatever and see if line in registers a signal.

I used to own a sabre dac up until last week. Are you using it as an amp as well?. if that's the case it might not be great for driving 600 ohm headphones. It was loud enough for my hd600's but they're fairly easy to drive.

If you really want those headphones get an o2 amp to go with your sabre dac. It's a great combo.

The HD600 is just 300 ohms IIRC, so that figures.

The O2 is $130 + shipping so I'd probably have to hold off on one or the other for a while.
