The concept isn't new by any means, meshnet type distribution and the like have been theorized (and technically possible) for decades.

It runs pretty well for what it is, from what I can see, and seems to have TOR integration if that's your thing.
>>
>>55680596
It's not but it's more like a branch of FreeNet and Tor. but a little faster.

Looking at the website (haven't downloaded it, yet), it seems it works in almost the same way torrents do.

Let's say you want to make a site. You get it out there, people start connecting to it, and they help you with the hosting, so even if you go down, the site is still alive.

There's a thing called ZeroID on there, which I guess assures nobody else steals your admin rights.

it sayas you can message the people of the sites, maybe cause there's so little users at the moment, there's no need for them?
The torrent sites there have most up to date things, it just takes a moment. Goto the side bar there on the right hand, pull it out and look down at the bottom where it says 10MB and change it to a larger size, I set mine to 100MB seem to help

>>55680915

He talks in colloquialism, which tells me he's either very advanced or a native speaker.

When you can seamlessly type English as if you were speaking it to show effect, pause, things of that nature you're emulating natural speech/thought cadence. It takes good mastery to reach that level.
>>
>>55680980
If done properly, not really. You won't be hosting the files themselves, you'll be hosting magnet links and a part of the website. I doubt that will take a lot of space.

Going to use 'namef**' here as I want my perspective to carry across a professional level of reddit-sysadmin/github community/ 4chan's-/g/.

Before I read into ZeroNet I want to establish a good working set of ideals for these projects. These should be kept in mind when developing them.
I find the problem with TOR, Kickass, and general pirating to be that there is no way to invite everyone in to a sharing/privacy platform, and then say: okay. This guy is with the wrong party(FBI, CIA, NSA, Gov't body, etc.) and then boot them out.

This platform needs to be:
1. user friendly--- the easier it is, the wider variety will use it and contribute. Even if a non-tech uses it, they can advocate it to some one capable of contributing to the project that is capable but hasn't heard of it yet. It should be easy to use (separate tech menus from regular menus, current industry's 'app-like' consumer menus)
2. There needs to be anonymity full stack, that can be traded to another user with evidence that a user/node has become corrupt. Ideally, probably picture evidence that also captures packet/tech evidence if available, then posts to a community forum and then a moderator checks and marks a node/user as 'red' meaning infected. This way users can use a node/user at their own risk.

As I am reading some of Glitchiebyte's posts I can tell that zeronet is not this easy yet, and therego cannot become a dominant platform.

A project of this scope needs to be full-stack with dedicated hosting hardware nodes in neutral countries that have a hard time or at least take 3 months to evict a hosting service of full anonymity. In using your name, you have in partial announced your identity if you have ever used this name on another digital service. This means that if someone wants to contact you directly you are all that more susceptible to corrupting the platform at a host level.

Alright, I'll bite

You wanted to help, sure, that's cool and all

Why did you feel the need to do it under an ID?

Did you really want to help or did you do it so you can build some "reputation"?

That's why everyone's attacking you lad, they're not stupid, they have the same brain like you and know what went through your head when you put on that trip

I don't care about a rep at all. Just trying to be friend. I put on a trip to be just a little different. It's not like youknow who I am. I am still an anon but with paint splashed on me. That is literally the only difference.

I'm trying to stay on topic as much as possible but for some dumb reason people on 4chan a lot of times like /g/ get all upset for no reason saying "OMG WE NEED TO BE ANON!!!!" like any one gives a shit who you are. Let them use a name for fuck sakes.

Don't forget to install IPFS. ZeroNet is for dynamic hipster HTML5 webpages. IPFS is for big files and actually downloads from multiple sources at the same time, like BitTorrent.
>>
>>55680384
>needs an ID to post anything
>no matter what the site displays by default, you can reveal every ID from every poster with a single modification of the site's js
>ID tracks you across IPs, sessions, connections, and sites so you can be profiled even more easily than on clearnet
>>
>>55683763
shhhh just install it
>>
>>55680596
It's been there for a year or two already. It's also not the first (?) project of its kind (not the only one at least - there's webtorrent, meganet, retroshare although it uses a slightly different, "better" principle, gnunet - although it's based on security and can't be fast by design, freenet - although it's even worse in that regard and has pretty bad scaling issues, IPFS, etc.). I think zeronet is the first one that is capable of building complete dynamic website in production, though. The other networks are either not available yet or can only distribute static content. Ethereum could be used to distribute the logic, though, making any other backend usable to store files proper.
>>
>>55683775
There are also additional significant issues, such as you absolutely need js activated to see any site whatsosever (since js processes all "server" logic), and people initially seed the content they posted themselves, so they can also modify that content at will. This means that even if the site doesn't let you post comments freely, or does input sanitation, you can still edit your post and inject malicious js and everyone will be forced to run it. There is already proof-of-concept up on 0chan in the relevant thread on /b/.
>>
>>55683747
zeronet also downloads from multiple peers at the same time. There's no way it'd be as fast as it is otherwise. Main two issues with IPFS is that you can't have dynamic sites (e.g. forums, chans, torrent trackers with user submissions, etc.) and name resolution takes a long time.
>>
>>55683819
No you can't. That's why hashes were made.
>>
>>55682336
You can only post a message every few minutes, because of the nature ZeroNet works. Your message has to go through all the peers first. They could have used a more descriptive error message, though.
>>
>>55684048
Yes you can. Not only has it LITERALLY BEEN DONE ALREADY AS A PROOF OF CONCEPT but the whole point of zeronet is that content is updateable p2p so all you have to do is change the content arbitrarily and run sitePublish, which will sign the content and push it to nearby peers. Since the content is newer and you signed it with the right key (your key), that's the content everyone receives.
>>
>>55684087
0chan doesn't have that issue.

God this is why people fucking hate 4chan cause you can't fucking grow up and let people like something. You have to act like children "STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE!!" When you finally get in your mid 20's you will stop caring about it, and as long as it works, you wont give a shit any more. I'm not better than you faggot but I can say that I'm willing to try new things and see where they lead.

Since 1/2 you losers literally do not know what BOTNET means here

bot·net
A network of private computers infected with malicious software and controlled as a group without the owners' knowledge, e.g., to send spam messages.

This shit is NOT infected. everyone here should have an antivirus and it would of noticed by now.

It's not a botnet but a network of computers helping each other out like torrents do where the computers hold a specific piece of information of the site. Like how your PC caches a picture from google or facebook but in this situation, it's holding part of the site. On the side menu, that allows you to increase the amt of info you can let the sites download to your PC

Again, use it or don't but stop fucking coming to the thread and ruining shit for other people

Nah I don't care that much, I just feel better on calling then out is all

>>55690744
That's not it anon. It's ok to call something out but something that wants to help you out in the end? Why insult it and be a complete asshole? What does that benifit? Instead you could give your 2 cents, tell them what you want done instead of being a child and complaining that it doesn't fit your specifications.
>>
>>55682931
you can use tor with it
>>
>>55690769
No one asked for help.
Please spend sometime and reflect on your personality.
I'm sure this sense of entitlement extends to other aspects of your life.

I'm not disagreeing with you on what people should do. I'm disagreeing that they should be expected to.
>>
>>55690805
That's fine and dandy too anon, but at least they don't need to be out right assholes for no reason. They don't like it when someone is an asshole to them. And if you say "it doesn't bother them" It's a build up and everyone has their point.
>>
So what exactly is the point of this shit?
>>
>>55690836
Alright well idk what we're taking about anymore

I'll try your botnet thing when i get home, that for posting it anon
>>
>>55690854
It's exactly like the regular internet except instead of servers hosting websites, YOU host the websites.

And by you I mean everyone who "seeds" the site.

I don't know why we need this.
>>
>>55690893

>I don't know why we need this.

Yeah, that's what I was wondering.
>>
>>55690905
I guess so that instead of a server company being forced to take it down, the ??? would have to stop thousands of users from seeding.

Assuming thousands of users did seed.
>>
>>55690854
>>55690905
From what I understand, the concept is that we can't be taken down. Say there's like 50 people hosting the site, even if the gov gets 40 of us, they still can't get 10 of us meaning even then the site is still up, which makes it amazing for people who need it for sites to sell specific things, or host certain content. (neither has been found thank god).

So basically it's like everyone hosts the site a little bit.
>>
>>55690480
>You either die a hero
*an
>>
>>55690972

Guess I'm just skeptical then. Can you name some actual examples on why this would ever be needed?
>>
>>55691037
ummmm
KAT ????????
>>
>>55691063

What about it? There's a lot of other public trackers.
>>
>>55691037
OK say we all hosted a chunk of Pokemon Go on our phones, that way we would never have a server issue
>>
>>55691090
Yes, but what's easier, taking down a few dozen servers, or taking down tens of thousands of literally whos?
>>
>>55691037
Can you imagine any scenario where one would want to host publicly available data that someone else wanted scrubbed?
>>
>>55691247

I get where you're coming from but I just don't see the practicality in this. I see this going nowhere. It's going to maintain a small userbase for a period of time while they host/distribute obscure content before it slowly dies off like everything else of this nature.
>>
>>55691247
Not a good example since a game's security often relies on the client not hosting it.

This is a good solution for websites that don't need security, like a public tracker for torrents.

However this does bring up the question of injecting malware into the site your hosting.
How does the system combat that?
Are websites accessed by a unique identifier such that any change by a host would result in a different path to reach said host?
So that said host wasn't counted as one of the potential seeds for a given site?
>>
>>55691380
Nvm just read it on their website
>>
>>55691356
if the users from Freenet or tor are smart, they will move their business over here due to that concept. But I can see what you mean for the simple fact that no one really wants to constantly leave their computers on and even then, those people are the same ones give something max a month and stop using it.

>>55691380
I saw something where that is a thing. I think that's where the username and mail thing come in. I don't really understand how it works but from what I've seen that's not a problem here. I wish I understood it more but I do not
>>
>>55691380
Any content is signed. The key used is tied to the identity when posting, and to the site itself when publishing a site proper. The latest version of a correctly signed datum is the one the network accepts.
>>
There are as much torrents in ZeroNet as it was in KAT? Quality torrents? Up do date? Very old and hard to find ones? Should I waste my motherfucking time with this punkass bitch?
>>
>>55680384
Thanks for the entertainment OP, this is hilarious. I decided to try zeronet to see exactly how insecure it is instead of just ripping on it and it was fun. Within a few minutes of messing around on zerochan I noticed the locations the images were being stored and how they stayed the same for users between posts and threads. On investigating this further I found that the folders also contained all the information about every post that user had made on the board along with every image submitted, there is also a file that gives you their zeronet ID. I then loaded a few more sites to have a larger set of information to search and tried searching the zeronet ID using grep. Sure enough it came up with information about a post by that user on another site. Now if that isn't enough, all this data is nicely sorted in JSON files that can be loaded by some database software to make it even eaiser to search. Part of me wants to get out some old hard drives I have sitting around, dedicate a ton of storage space to this (I can do about 770 GB), and use the information to harass/dox posters. Given how the data is already setup to be used in a database it won't be hard to gather that information if the user posts it. I never thought I'd see the day when an actual open source botnet would be shilled on /g/.

Anyone else want to play secret NSA agent with me?

yes

>>55691538
Why be an asshole? All you are is some douche sitting at your desk acting all cool. No one cares what you can do and no one is taking you seriously. This is meant to get away from societies normal internet and go figure some asshole has to ruin it for someone else. Thanks anon. This is why we can't have nice things.
>>
>>55691616

How is it his fault? Someone else would have found all that out if he didn't.
>>
>>55691616
Oh boy here we go again
The anon you're replying to is right
Instead of being a crybaby
The correct response was:

But anon that will only work on stupid users.
For the website hosts it's as simple as logging on from a different IP everytime you update your website using the private key.

Then you get the added benefit of users hosting your site for you.
>>
>>55691641
More than likely, is this considered a security flaw?

>>55691659
I'm not, I'm legit wondering why people like him have to ruin things for other people
>>
>>55691538
>>55691659
Respond to this if you can.
I'd like to know if I'm right.

>>55691708
They don't, he was making a good point.
If you had read my response you'd see the point I refuted with
>>
>>55691786
I didn't think about it.

>>55691538
>he thought I was memeing when I kept telling everyone about it
At least you tested it, it's better than the blind tards in this thread, and the shill (but anyone's better than a shill).

>>55690239
>It's not a botnet but a network of computers helping each other out like torrents do where the computers hold a specific piece of information of the site. Like how your PC caches a picture from google or facebook but in this situation, it's holding part of the site. On the side menu, that allows you to increase the amt of info you can let the sites download to your PC
