despite what you see in the second picture, it's aparently just melted plastic
the sata contacts underneath are actually still serviceable

Both drives do read on a usb adapter.

It's not. It literally isn't bad from a technical stand point.
The wires all lead to the same places in the PSU.
The problem is probably that molex to sata power connectors are made for 1c in Chinese sweat shops using poor quality plastics and having dodgy connections inside the sata connector.

From the same perspective, shitty sata to sata extension cables will have the same issues.
