Not necessarily faster, just less bloatware, and not if you're using unity which is default for ubuntu.

Not if you're doing anything interesting. You should break your own configuration every few days to keep you on your toes.

>more secure
Not that it's hard to keep a windows box secure if you're not a dumbshit.
>>
>>55663369

I use it because it is easier.
The window manager is much better, meaning everything I do is easier as a result.
The package manager makes it easier to manage software.
The command line makes it easier to automate tasks.
When bugs or errors is discovered, they are easy to address or work around.

Windows costs a hundred bucks, Linux is free.

Windows has deliberate backdoors and ads, Linux has no intentional backdoors and no ads.

Linux has much more modest hardware requirements than Windows.

It is harder to accidentally contract a virus on Linux than on Windows.

Linux updates stay free forever, and you don't get pestered to install them, unlike on Windows.

If you don't know why you need it then you don't need it. Contrary to the meme some faggots (most of which are newbie zaelots) want you to fall for, Linux is not an I-don't-believe-it's-not-windows, just-werks-without-understanding-unix, average-consumer's-desktop-ready OS. If you do fall for it, you'll be back on /g/ in a week complaining about no games and your wifi not working.

Linux is way better for networking, VMs, programming and specialized tasks for which you may (or may not) bastardize/customize it.

Personally I use it because I like it better in terms of usability, automation, look/feel and stability (which may not be given with any distro though)

linux is great for a few reasons:
+package manager keeps every program on your computer up to date with just one command
+bash (with command line tools) is really useful in development
+open source is an awesome idea
+choice in desktop environment: gnome, kde, cinnamon, etc.

linux sucks because:
-doesn't support some nice to have proprietary technologies like directx, hardware drivers
-some features aren't as user friendly
-ui design in DEs leaves a lot to be desired; nothing ever feels truly smooth and reliable

if you're a developer, you already know what you need.
if you're a younger guy comfortable with computers but you don't develop, use windows
if you're setting up a computer for an old guy, do him a favor and get him a mac. otherwise he won't be able to tell

Linux is good for setting up something to do one task and then locking it down. Servers, access terminals. For years my mom has used a Linux laptop I set up for her that just has a web browser but is otherwise totally locked down (basically roll-your-own Chromebook). I update it every year or two when I see her, and it's always a PITA to set up since Linux is so buggy, but once it's set up you can just lock it down and forget it.

I've used Linux as a desktop OS in the past as a 'power user', and it's a massive pain. Shit it always breaking, and unless you're familiar with the terminal you're usually SOL. Would never ever recommend desktop Linux to anyone but the ultra nerd-core that actually like when things break (since they enjoy fixing stuff), since shit ALWAYS breaks.

If you're casual and just use your PC for simple gaming, internet browsing, video editing, all of the basic shit than Linux is not even worth it. If you want to try it you should run it on a USB first, or at least partition your HDD/SSD and dual boot it with Windows or whatever OS you have and just use Linux straight for a week or two to see if you like it.

You should use Linux if you value:
Speed - Your computer will boot up in less than ten seconds and won't have a bunch of Windows bloat slowing it down. This is an advantage even if you have top-of-the-line hardware.
Freedom- You have complete control over your computer. You're not beholden to some EULA or terms and conditions of use. The system isn't locked down. You can change every single aspect of it, and you can even rice it without having to install some third-party program like Rainmeter.

Don't use it if you just want a PC that plays videogames. There just aren't enough game devs making games for Linux, and WINE (the compatibility layer that lets you run Windows programs in Linux) is pretty hit-and-miss. For that matter, don't use it if you want to use all your Windows programs. You will have to find Linux alternatives.

>why should i use linux?
You shouldn't if you can't think of a reason.

>what advantage does it have over windows?
- Better performance.
- UI that makes sense and isn't a Frankenstein monster, and can be customized however you like.
- Desktop friendly OS and not a Frankenstein monster infecting a desktop user's experience with touchscreen/portable UI cancer
- More secure Internet browsing because most files on the Internet waiting to infect and fuck up a computer are aimed towards Windows and don't work for shit on Linux.
- Better in terms of basic media consumption (video and audio)

Disadvantages:
- Not gayming friendly.
- Adobe.
- Needs you to put off half a single day to set it up properly.

I use Windows 7 + Ubuntu.
One for gaymes and Adobe with everything sandboxed except the aforementioned, and the other for everything else.

Windows Update.
Microsoft Store.
Windows 7/8/8.1 auto-update to Windows 10.
No backware compatibility in DirectX releases (Direct3D12 not working on Windows 7/8), what are you gonna do when they release Direct3D13 and you don't want (can) to upgrade your system? Will you pay (again) a hundred dollars to have your new trash system?

Or the majority is uneducated, Linux is used for web browsing and development, just because one thing is marketed more than the other doesn't make it better. Plus who would take the time installing Linux themselves when windows 10 come with their brand new laptop / desktop with the fancy touchscreen that makes it cost $200 more.

That's not a reason on why Windows is better, you're merely just showing statistics.

>durr hurr i can't read to save muh fuckin life hurr durr

>Explain HOW it's better.
OK.

Windows is worth $100 to about 90% of people. So, on average, windows' value to the consumer is about $90.

Linux has no calculable value to the user since it doesn't cost them anything. However, you can say with near certainty that if Windows were canonically $0, there would be no such thing as linux (on the desktop). That 1% share would drop by 90% to "basically one person masturbating to anime"

More people use windows than linux because windows better suits their needs

And a system which better suits the need of 90% is better than the one which does it to 2%

More usable=better

Reasons to use Linux:

>Potato PC
Linux has joke tier hardware requirements. Hence you tend to see OS based of the Linux Kernal (Or Linux distros themselves) used for meme computers like the raspberry pi. I have a friend who's only computer couldn't run properly until he installed Linux.

>Command line
Self explanatory. Being fluent in the command line makes navigating your computer a lot faster. But only if you have a firm memory of where everything is installed.

>Servers
Linux is free

If any of these reasons aren't super important to you then don't bother using Linux. Mac OS is virtually superior in everyday for everyday use, while Windows is the only choice if you intend to use it for gaming. Wine is an awful emulator and should only be used to emulate indie flash games.

Also if you're haxorz then I heard some Linux distros can help you out with that but I don't know how or why.
>>
>>55664290

Have you ever even played a video game before? Let alone have you even tried using Wine on a triple A high performance title?

Bloody hell, does shilling only refer to people with contested opinions to what's currently accepted? Because if this was anywhere other than 4chan you'd be called out instantly on your bullshit.

If 100% Software would be crossplatform and 100% Pcs came with Linux preinstalled noone would use Windows.

Windows won in the 90's building a true monopoly. All the people using comptures have grown in a Windows world, completely brainwashed.

>why should i use linux?
it's free as in $
>what advantage does it have over windows?
security, mostly
it's also quite a bit nicer for development/server work as previously stated

like, I'm running win7 on this machine now out of laziness, but I've used Linux as a main day-to-day system on and off for the last ten years now

there's other advantages (it tends to be faster than Windows), and there's disadvantages (most of the software you use isn't for Linux -- there's alternatives usually, but some of them (like using GIMP to replace PS) aren't really comparable)

>>55667265
>shit always breaks
what am I reading

Use a distro that doesn't suck.
Ubuntu generally just werks. In fact, at no point do you actually need to open the terminal with Ubuntu, you can install software, edit configuration, all of that shit right through the GUI.
Debian is slightly more effort (mostly adjusting little quality-of-life stuff, the actual install is easy), but also generally just werks.
shit, even something like slackware (which looks kind of complicated at first glance, but is actually pretty piss-easy, it walks you through everything) can be used by anyone as a day to day

pretty much the only issues I've had with Linux involve the fact that a couple of the programs I use regularly are Windows only
last time I had issues with shit breaking was when Ubuntu switched to PulseAudio years ago
