Opera sold to chinks for $600 million

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

>After a previous deal fell through, Opera has reached an agreement to sell the mobile and desktop browser portion of its business to a group of Chinese companies for an estimated $600 million. Opera will retain its advertising business in a bid to avoid a long regulatory holdup.

>The lead investor among the buyers is Kunlun Tech Co., a Beijing-based company that operates the Brothersoft desktop app store and 1Mobile Android app market. They also bought a majority stake in gay dating app Grindr earlier this year as the business tries to expand outside of its core, which is mobile game development.

>The other buyer named so far is Qihoo 360, whose business is less varied than Kunlun's with most of Qihoo's efforts focused on their 360 series of anti-virus products and the ads they sell through them. Both companies are said to be trying to build themselves up to better compete with fellow Chinese corporate giants Alibaba and Tencent.

What is it with the technological field's constant unwarranted fear of anything Chinese?

The fuck are they going to use your precious private data for? It's not like they can order drone strikes on you or SWAT you.

Nor are they building some global search engine based off your browsing habits.

Seriously it makes no sense for some Western web user to be afraid of Le Chinese Acquisition.

On mobile, as long as they have built in adblock and Opera Turbo I don't really care who owns it.

I can vouch for this. My gf (whose father is Taiwanese btw) spent June in Taiwan with her father's family. After her dad went back to New York, she got period cramps and wanted to get something for it. Her uncle and other family said they will take her to a clinic. They ended up taking her to a hospital instead. They gave her something to sign and she refused and wanted to leave. Her uncle signs it instead and they they eventually sedate her and apply meds. Keep in mind she's an adult who was enjoy conscious. This shit wouldn't fly here in North America. Taiwan? Fuck that. I can only imagine how bad mainland China is.

Just to make it clear to everyone who has been saying Opera is Chinese since the announcement.

1) As today, Opera isn't owned by the Chinese, the deal failed. All this time, Opera has been Norwegian and the dev team have been from that country, working in that country too.

2) Right now, and until this new deal is approved, Opera still isn't owned by the Chinese. The deal will take a couple of months to be completed, and there is a chance it will fail too.

3) Whatever happen to Opera, the dev team will still be Norwegian until further notice.
>>
>>55642192
How does discord has anything related?
You can run that shit on your browser, there is no need to install anything, bro

Also, you have that german alternative to chromium/chrome as it basically just https://github.com/gcarq/inox-patchset

0. I want the times when Firefox AND Chrome were good back. When you had to pick which is better for you, not which is less worse. Just download earlier versions of Chrome(before 15) and see for yourself: fast, uncluttered, wonderful. What made me switch in the first place. Now even the new tab page takes a second to load and routinely breaks and displays IRRELEVANT pages, not the ones you visit the most.

I have been making my own browser from scratch with my own rendering engine for about a year now everyday based on /g/ needs, it needs more work but it'll be released in a few months. Omega web browser, Alpha rendering engine. It is built for speed and security, meaning all older SSL and SSLv3 exploits are patched out and all the shit that Chrome does is blocked. I used Firefox before it, I liked it but Gecko was too fucking slow and it had telemetry and spyware in it. My browser is licensed under a non cuck license, GPLv3 and LGPLv3 with some MIT.

Is this compatible with chrome's extensions sense it basicly is chrome?

Chrome is fucking me over kind of hard right now with no real way to fix it, so looking for alternatives that may work.

So fucking sick of process grouping and no idea how to turn it off again, apparently that's not the term i'm looking for so searching comes up with dick. Would love to move off it, but some extensions I don't want to live without, a few vivaldi i think has built in.

Thanks for the heads up, removed everywhere.

Protip: On 6.0+ Android Samsung phones ABP has released a plugin for "Internet" - which is basically Chrome. So now you have iOS like very fast ad blocking and browsing.

Firefox Beta is not that bad either with uBlock.
>>

It's literally Blink engine, same as Chrome.

What about your DNS, internet?
Vivaldi UI is a bit tad slow, I do agree, but the engine/page load?

What's the point in using Vivaldi when you can just use a firefox fork?
>>
>>55647796
Hmm, I just tried loading their forums. Vivaldi takes ~4 seconds to load boards and topics, while Firefox takes ~4-5.
Internet isn't great because I'm basically in Africa right now. It seems like Vivaldi taking 10 seconds to load the login page was some weird anomaly.
I wish Vivaldi supported high DPI, though. That UI is tiny on my screen.

Period cramps don't exist in Asia.
It's an entirely Western phenomenon and a textbook example of mass hysteria (which women are especially prone to)
Here in Japan women never complain about such things because they don't exist.
American women "get cramps" because they think they're supposed to. This is how vagina logic works

So they probably thought your gf was an insane American bitch, because she is

>>

For me, they were. Vivaldi also supports the "continue where you left off", so you know, once it crashes, everything you had will be re opened.

Of course, doing serious banking stuff - should not be done on a snapshot build - even though I only had crashes on opening pages for the first time. I just always open an IE when I have to do banking.
