Also where would I service it without worry?
I'm thinking of buying a SARB. Yes I know it's a "cheap" watch, but I like my stuff to last; especially watches.
Also Cream or Black? Are either of them sunburst?

>>
>>55596838
>>55596866
the term mechanically more secure doesn't mean anything. what specifically are you trying to find out?

The regatta timer is a complication, the more complications a mechanical watch has the more you can expect to spend on a regular service. Also, more complications mean that there is more to potentially go wrong.

Rolex movements are very good and generally robust, so it is a sound watch. A more entry level rolex however will be more robust.

"mechanically more secure" isn't terminology that will yield an answer since it doesn't have any specific meaning.
>>
>>55596914
awesome, thanks for that. exactly what i was thinking, but i wasn't sure if they put as much effort into making sure their entry level watches were as well made as the more expensive ones, for the core functions of a watch at least.

I've been thinking about buying a watch so I don't have to use my phone every time I want to check the time. I want something that looks at least somewhat good and is fairly durable, because I don't want a watch that will break easily.

Would this Timex watch be good?
http://global.timex.com/node/78841#collapseThree

In my opinion, it looks decent, and they say that it has a "rugged construction" (whatever that means) and is water resistant up to 50 meters, which sounds good.

Alpine kikes are at it as usual.

For 300$ you got the Seiko SARB/SARG/SARX series of watches along with the Orient Star line. Hamilton and a few others should still have a few decent models that use the standard and time tested ETA 2824 movement.

Timex are alright overall, though they tick extremely loud.

The Timex watch was on a pretty good sale, 50 euros now and 85 normally, so I thought it would be a pretty good deal. One online watch store in my country has a sale going on, and they have some of the watches on sale. The sale is not the deciding factor of course, but it's always a big plus.

>>55599656
I'm not really certain about the styling since I've never owned a watch, but metal wrist bands seem unnecessarily difficult to adjust, and they might get a little cold during winter, so I'm not sure if I want one. I like the look of the Timex watch I posted. I don't want a watch that is too "sporty" because those will probably look stupid with regular clothing.

As far as features go, nothing fancy is needed. I just want a clock strapped to my wrist, but extra features are not necessarily bad. As I already said, I want something that is somewhat durable so I don't have toworry about it breaking too much. I'm not planning to go diving or anything with it, but I'd still like something that won't break if accidentally submerged.

As far as price goes, I'd like to keep it under 60 euros, but I'm willing to go a little higher if it's really worth the price. As I said above, the Timex watch is on a pretty good sale so it seems like a good deal.

>The Timex watch was on a pretty good sale, 50 euros now and 85 normally, so I thought it would be a pretty good deal.

More or less the regular price for them. Not like it's a bad thing, it's an okay watch but in that price range you have other things akin to the Amphibia and Seiko 5.

>but metal wrist bands seem unnecessarily difficult to adjust,
Usually in lower price ranges bracelets are meh at best, and are easy to adjust on your own. If you're too clumsy then go to a watch shop to do it for you.

And the straps that come with them aren't that good either. Investing a good 10 to 20$ on a better strap is usually the best course of action. Nylon is an exception.

>and they might get a little cold during winter
Nope

>I don't want a watch that is too "sporty" because those will probably look stupid with regular clothing
So go here http://www.watchsleuth.com/seiko5finder/

Find a model that you like and search it on eBay.
>>
>>55599785
>As far as price goes, I'd like to keep it under 60 euros
Really limited at that pricepoint to either cheap G-shocks, or fashion quartz. Nothing at that point is going to be particularly reliable or 'tough', but it shouldn't break unless you put effort into it. Go for the Timex if you like it. I'm at a loss for what else there is at that price point.

You adjust bracelets once and they should be fine. If it's a high quality one you shouldn't ever have to worry ever again, but lower quality ones in your range (folded versus solid links) typically aren't worth it due to hair pulling, but cheap good aftermarket ones exist.

They'll only be cold once being put on, then they'll adjust to your body temperature of course.

What you posted looks more military inspired, called a field watch. It looks fine with regular clothing like jeans and a tshirt, maybe casual button down, etc.

A Timex should hold up fine and has the basic features you could want. Just consider you'll have to replace the battery once in a while, which is easy to do. Other cheap brands are Casio, and subsidiary brands like Pulsar, Lorus.

Common other recommendations would be like a mechanical Seiko 5 like above, or Vostok Komandirskie or Amphibian.

What if I raised the budget to maybe 100 euros? If I'm gonna get a watch I might as well get a good one. The Seiko 5 series sounds really good, if I understood correctly the wind themselves automatically.

I live in Finland and I'd like to order from inside the country which makes things a little difficult. What do you think of this?

http://www.laatukellot.fi/seiko-5-musta-teras-p-64739.html

It's some Seiko 5 series watch, the model number is SNK361K1. It's currently on a 53% sale so it costs 90 euros. Would this be durable enough? Watch is in the pic.

As far as the wrist strap goes, I don't consider myself clumsy so the adjusting won't be a big deal if it's not super difficult.
>>
>>55600012
>Would this be durable enough?
So long as you don't bring a hammer to it, there should be no problems.

There are literally thousands of Seiko 5 models and variants, so spend some time looking for one that really catches your eye. There are plenty in the military style that the Timex follows.

And yes, you do understand correctly. Most automatic watches have a power reserve in the range of 30-40 hours, but so long as you wear it, it'll never run dry, and you don't exactly need to be running marathons to get the thing moving either, even the slightest movement will result in some charge being built.
>>
>>55600012
The same watch is available here for USD $70, which is around most Seiko 5 models, so just make sure you can't get it cheaper there.
>>
>>55600055
Finland, Sweeden, and Norway all suffer insane import taxes for no reason whatsoever. That and some things just tend to cost more in Europe anyway.
>>
>>55600012
I've owned a simillar model to this one before (SNK357) and it's alright mostly.

Though It has a terrible [5] printing all over the dial.
>>
>>55600048
The Seiko 5 series sounds really good then, not having to worry about the clock running out of power as long as it's being used sounds awesome. And I'm not planning to abuse it, I'm probably not gonna use it if there's a significant risk of it getting hit too hard.

>>55600055
>>55600068
Many things here tend to cost a lot more than in many other countries, especially the US. It seems like that if I want to get a Seiko 5 without having to order from other countries, the watch I linked is as good as it gets for 100 euros. The watch is normally sold at 195 euros, and 90 euros now on sale, which seems insanely expensive if you can get one for 70 bucks there.
>>
>>55600148
>I'm probably not gonna use it if there's a significant risk of it getting hit too hard.
It takes a fair bit of effort to break one, the only real common way a watch will get damaged is by sending it face first into a corner of a desk. Even then, with a fair bit of force.

Okay so where could I find a similar watch to this? I really like the case and the part where the strap is attached to the case (no idea what it's called, a lug maybe?)

Helgray said they were going to do a rerun, but based on pictures they posted a while ago they changed the case completely, so I've lost all interest in their "revised" version. So now I'm looking for a similar style of watch. Does anyone know of a model that looks similar-ish?

Greetings from London. Although I'm visiting my parents in Toronto today. Any sign of our fat LordMatic friend downtown there?

Part of the reason why I came back was to get a new strap for my 7018. I found this forded rink braceret from my Type II buried in a desk drawer in my old room. Aside from the gap around where the endlinks are supposed to be (why the fuck did they not put hooded lugs on the 701x, would have been perfect) I think it's looking pretty good. I have no idea how well it's keeping time because you can't really "hack" a Seiko chronograph, but the Toronto watchmaker said he had it regulated to "about +5-10s".

Whether or not you are a 52 snob, there is literally no reason to get a 56 over anything else. It's basically an ancient 6R15 that can sometimes be had with more interesting designs.

Two completely different watches that serve completely different purposes. Get a SARB and a Submariner, it's not like the Alpinist is hideously expensive.

I have tried on both the Sub C, and 42mm Explorer ii and like them both. The ExpII is a bit more unique and despite the larger size, my 7.5" wrist fits it with room to spare.

Any alternatives for this watch? It seems too unreliable for daily use.
>>
>>55619067
It's 38mm so definitely bitch wrist friendly. Great choice for a first watch, personally I find them to be a bit boring though.
>>
>>55619226
Not him but it's vintage, of course it is going to have a degree of unreliability. At the very least you have zero water resistance, and quite often there are other quirks that go along with owning one. Its not like they can't be fixed, though. Either way it's not for everyone. And no, there is no modern equivalent to Seiko's 701x chronos.
>>
>>55618835
what is the difference under the skin?
>>
>>55613998
>So, /g/, I have a limited budget and it's impossible for me to get a sapphire + automatic watch, so I'm going for an Orient Symphony for 154€.
Tisell.
>>
>>55619556
They have the same movement if that's what your asking, the SARX has somewhat better finishing and a far more interesting design.
>>
>>55619506
how about reliable automatic chronographs not necessary seiko, does such thing exist, either vintage or modern?
>>
>>55619595
is there a darker version?
>>
>>55619644
also I'm confused as fuck. why can't I find those watches on official site?
>>
>>55619608
A citizen 8110 is a better bet than the notably flawed 6138/9 movements, it's superior in almost every way but a good one will cost you a fair bit of change and are harder to find. Mechanical chronos are expensive and delicate, if you want reliability go quartz.

>>55619644
They're both black, there aren't "darker" versions.

>>55619679
JDM models, they aren't sold by Seiko USA and have to be imported.
>>
>>55619698
I'm from europe. I have to import it? any good, trustworthy sites?

Enjoying my chinkwatch with st2525 movement.
Talk shit about it, I don't care.
>>
>>55595252

i'm interested too, I made a few bucks on a side job and picked up an SARG005 which has the same movement.

Should be here in a few weeks

Which low-price Seiko is the most similar to this one? Doesn't have to be new.
>>
>>55621245
A vintage 6218 or similar.
>>
>>55621245

sarb035
>>

Nope.

Pretty good approximation. Thanks. Kinda rare though.

why not? Nope isn't sufficient

Case shape is too rounded.
Don't like that matte dial color.
Don't like the busy seconds dial.
Don't like the lume on the hands.
Don't like that counterweight on the second.

Hey guys, it's been 2 years and my Timex Expedition strap is falling apart. Could you please recommend me a new one that would look nice with it?

My only caveat is no leather. Leather smells disgusting after sweating and falls apart.

How about leather with rubber backing, fämalam?
>>
>>55621880
Mmmmmm no, sorry. There's leather on the inside there. The strap that came with the expedition was leather on the inside, and it's just nasty now from sweat.
>>
Why do people like rubber straps so much?
I understand wearing them for diving, but they're not breathable and make your arm sweat.
Bracelets are the best for summer.
>>
>>55621945
>I understand wearing them for diving

Mostly this.
I don't change back to my bracelet when i hike/climb because i don't want to damage it needlessly but you are right out was more comfortable for out of ocean activities
>>
>>55621845
Nato strap.
>>
>>55620966
Mine is a 3$ knockoff with a leather strap I got off an old watch so I'm fairly happy

>>55623654

>>

>>
>>55624238
Yes
>>
>>55624258
I feel like the datejust is much more conservative than the Yachtmaster II in particular.

the regular yachtmaster is just a more blingy submariner but the II is horrendous.

I rather like the datejust though I didn't at first. even the twotone version has grown on me

they sell watches they don't have. This leads to shitty waiting times.

I am sure there are other reasons but I've never dealt with them so I only know what I've heard
>>
>>55627740
Eh, at sometimes 40% less than AD it's well worth it. The prices are comparable to buying mint condition used ones from the Japanese consignment sellers on Ebay, except it's brand new with box and papers, no customs fees, and you can return it domestically if you don't like it, instead of having to pay for shipping it half-way around the globe (if the seller even offer returns to begin with). Buyers on WUS and Leddit mostly reported no issues.
