It's 2016
macs still can't play blurays

Plays fine on my 8 year old iMac.
If anything, it opens webms in a new tab, even vp9 format.

it gets batter battery life than FF or Chrome (especially Chrome)
but there's no good reason it doesn't play webms

The VLC plugin for Safari lets you play WebM content in a new tab. If you really must have the best browser WebM experience, Safari falls short in this aspect. However, the VLC plugin is adequate and convenient enough to keep you from popping open Chrome or Firefox.
Other than that, Safari has a superior content blocking solution, and is very smooth and easy on your battery. I think my only complaint about it is that Safari sometimes will oddly take a longer than usual time to load a page, which is kind of annoying.
