Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

That's a good point. I can't support such a shitty company. But are there any humanely made computers on the market these days?

Nigga, then for god sake's stop using that insanely weak scheme and get a strong Master Passphrase with which to lock all your passwords.

Which by the way should really be randomly generated and at least 20 characters long.

Yes, all of them. Even the non-important ones.

>what do you do when you have to use them outside of your local computer
I wouldn't if I can help it. But if you must, you can keep an encrypted USB with your passwords maybe. Or as a shitty very temporary measure, jot down the one you know you're going to use in a piece of paper and then get rid of it

hey /g/ having some trouble with fstab in my install. i have a 1tb hdd set up as my home dir

#second hdd as home partition
UUID=f9ff0a0e-9c84-46fc-8002-48d56308ce7e /home ext4 defaults 0 2

and its fine for me to get the files there works no problem but when a program say digikam is trying to write a database to my Pictures directory it can't. I tried changing permissions but it reverts back so i'm thinking its fstab and the default ownership. anytip helps

I'm trying to use urxvt and I'm trying to costumize it but I'm having a hell of a time for some reason. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, when I try to change the settings via the xdefaults file nothing happens. So I thought maybe it was just me so I went and copied a file from https://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/Urxvt and saved it as ~/.Xdefaults and still nothing is happening.

So I went to the arch wiki and it says that it should go to ~/.Xresources so I copied it there and still nothing. Pic related is Distro/WM if it's relevant at all. (And the terminal pictured is the default Gnome one.)
>>
>>55573436
i'm using minidlna and vlc on my phone. works in the same network. which I'm guessing is what you want. its not too hard to set up, config file is simple
something like
media_dir= A,/home/user/Music (here A -> audio files)
media_dir=V,/home/user/Videos

I use it to stream things to my ps3 since its running low on storage

here's how it looks on my phone
using
# Path to the directory you want scanned for media files.
#
# This option can be specified more than once if you want multiple directories
# scanned.
#
# If you want to restrict a media_dir to a specific content type, you can
# prepend the directory name with a letter representing the type (A, P or V),
# followed by a comma, as so:
# * "A" for audio (eg. media_dir=A,/var/lib/minidlna/music)
# * "P" for pictures (eg. media_dir=P,/var/lib/minidlna/pictures)
# * "V" for video (eg. media_dir=V,/var/lib/minidlna/videos)
# * "PV" for pictures and video (eg. media_dir=PV,/var/lib/minidlna/digital_c$
#media_dir=/var/lib/minidlna
>>
>>55573815

Neither of these worked.

Side note, that may or may not be relevant. I'm currently using rofi to open urxvt. And when I select the program named "urxvt" and hit enter nothing opens so I've been opening the one labeled "rxvt-unicode"
>>
Why does

Yes it is compiled with +showbreak
>>

rxvt-unicode is urxvt. i don't know what you're doing wrong, try with a simpler xresources that doesn't throw config errors?

I have committed a sin and installed Nvidia proprietary drivers.
I'm really hoping AMD gives Vega the Polaris treatment and gives it support on the coming kernel updates. 4.8 has some neat stuff like freesync and whatnot and it would be around the time Vega comes out.

I think you mean +linebreak, because +showbreak doesn't exist. That may be your problem.

Have you tried
:help showbreak
?
>>
Can someone help me with vim?

I'm sure you can edit the appearance of this like you can edit all of vim's color scheme.
>>
>>55574145
Well, that's working now. Not going to question it. Thanks anon.

One less question, I added transparency to urxvt via
URxvt.depth: 32
URxvt.background: rgba:0000/0000/0200/c800

Is there a way I could make it less opaque
>>
>>55574289
Sorry for that I did mean +linebreak
I already tried the commands in help
>>
>>55574428
URxvt.transparent: true
URxvt.shading: n

n=0 is opaque
n=100 is fully transparent

For the guy reading this 10 years later, browsing the archives:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7614546/vim-cursorline-color-change-in-insert-mode

Use hex, it's easier for the brain (at least for me). Syntax is like this:

URxvt.background: [alpha]#color
URxvt.background: [95]#111111

when you look at the performances of amd with vulkan and all their work on the linux kernel and their new drivers,

And it was before the issue with the power consumption that was fixed and gave better performances on windows. And the rumours are saying that you'll get better performances with a non reference GPU.

AMD will deliver, for sure. Seeing those benchmarks, I might buy a new gpu for christmas when all the hype will be over and that we will get more benchmarks of all GPUs

Thanks, one last question and then I should be good on my own. I'm not sure if this is controlled via the terminal or if it's via Vim itself. But does anyone know how I can get vim on urxvt use the same color scheme as vim does on the Gnome Terminal?
>>
I just installed Debian and set up Firefox for secure browsing, noscript, no requests, ran the foritification guide, and now most pages only display the basic layout and text.
This is how I like my browser, however I am aware that it isn't possible to access email/banking/paying for shopping on it, so when I used Windows I always used vanilla Internet Explorer and only for those two purposes, and not for anything else ever.
I wouldn't even browse on it if I was buying shit, I would copy the link from firefox and just buy it from that point to avoid all the ads and gay shit.
Now that I am on debian, I obviously don't have IE, and I'm not sure which browsers are to be used/avoided

What is a good browser to install, with which I will be handling personal info?
Chromium? Opera? Any suggestions that have been tried and proven plox
>>
>>55574628

>>
>>55574647
Would something like this work as an alternative to having multiple browsers?
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/Firefox/Multiple_profiles

>>
>>55574647
You may also want to tweak your about:config.
One of many guides:https://gist.github.com/haasn/69e19fc2fe0e25f3cff5

Or just use GNU Icecat which comes (AFAIK) with sane defaults.
>>
>>55574647
You might have gone a little overboard there, champ.

Firefox with Ublock Origin and HTTPS Everywhere is already pretty strong. And you can use your bank stuff there.

If you want ultra-secure browsing you can always just have a Tails Live USB for that, it's preconfigured for you.
>>
>>55574710
What's your solution?
>>
>>55574747
For some reason urxvt and the Gnome terminal default to two different color schemes in vim. I just found the one that gnome terminal was using (koehler) and then added
 syntax on
colo koehler

to my .vimrc
>>
>>55574736
>overboard
Maybe so, but I've been doing it like this for the past 4 years, and have had much better browsing experiences since then. No more redundant laggy scripts, no more media autoplay or ads. As for tails, I don't need that level of security, I just do this for convenience of fast browsing

Canonical are hated in the community because while they own the most popular distro, they never market themselves as part of the Linux community, and more their own thing. Which is fine on its own. unstable doesn't have "security updates" it has updates, the package simply gets updated. You're confusing security patches, which are done by the package maintainer, with updates which are done by the developer/upstream. sid doesn't have security patches because usually the developer already has a fix/new version, security patches are for repos with old software (Jessie).

I'll say this again even though it should be obvious: There is a trade-off between stability and up-to-date-ness.

Your computer will be less stable if all its packages are updating without extensive testing. Your packages will be dated if you want them to be secure and tested for bugs.

You make it sound like that isn't the greatest thing imaginable. You have complete access to those servers as if you had them in front of you. You can tunnel traffic and forward ports through it, it has sftp built in. Overall it's one of the most useful tools at your disposal.

That's exactly what I said. sid doesn't have a repo for security patches like Jessie does. It has the newest available package, which means it's the first to get an upstream fix but It will NEVER receive a "security patch" by the maintainer, you are dependent on the developer to fix/release a new version of the software.

A theory is that systemd was pushed so hard because it colossal convolution would allow the NSA (whom Red Hat -- a major systemd proponent -- is known to cooperate with) to hide an obfuscated backdoor in there.

If you're trying to avoid three-letter agencies you'd best stay away from anything with systemd or any corporate backing. Of course if that's your threat model you're on a whole other level of fucked, so stick to tails.

Yes, I am glad and all that the totally free distros and repos exist,(and really I am, I think its great that there are still software devs with principles) but in terms of practical usage this is an unnecessary pain in the ass - I think I'll just get fucked by canonical and start using my computer.

Maybe I can ask you:

I made a Tails Live USB. When I use it on my laptop (T420 Thinkpad) and shut it down, in the RAM wiping part, it gets stuck and never actually wipes the memory. I have to press the power button to shut it down. And it won't boot up again right away to Tails, in fact it will refuse to show the Thinkpad logo until I remove the USB, which causes to promptly show me GRUB and my regular Debian installation. I then have to boot into Debian, power the computer off, plug the USB again, and boot from the USB for it to be able to boot into Tails again.

Do you have any idea how I could fix this "getting stuck at wiping RAM" bit? A few friends with other different laptops told me it happens to them too.

I tried the same Tails USB on my desktop and it goes through the RAM wiping process without issues

Dubya has nominated another caveman for a federal appeals court. Refreshingly, the Democratic Party is organizing opposition.
The nominee is quoted as saying that if the choice of a sexual partner were protected by the Constitution, "prostitution, adultery, necrophilia, bestiality, possession of child pornography, and even incest and pedophilia" also would be. He is probably mistaken, legally — but that is unfortunate. All of these acts should be legal as long as no one is coerced. They are illegal only because of prejudice and narrowmindedness.
Some rules might be called for when these acts directly affect other people's interests. For incest, contraception could be mandatory to avoid risk of inbreeding. For prostitution, a license should be required to ensure prostitutes get regular medical check-ups, and they should have training and support in insisting on use of condoms. This will be an advance in public health, compared with the situation today.
For necrophilia, it might be necessary to ask the next of kin for permission if the decedent's will did not authorize it. Necrophilia would be my second choice for what should be done with my corpse, the first being scientific or medical use. Once my dead body is no longer of any use to me, it may as well be of some use to someone. Besides, I often enjoy rhinophytonecrophilia (nasal sex with dead plants).

xwininfo: Window id: 0x2800be6 "brian@prizm: ~/videos"

Absolute upper-left X: 627
Absolute upper-left Y: 569
Relative upper-left X: 1
Relative upper-left Y: 26
Width: 650
Height: 427
Depth: 32

Visual Class: TrueColor
Border width: 0
Class: InputOutput
Colormap: 0x2800003 (not installed)
Bit Gravity State: NorthWestGravity
Window Gravity State: NorthWestGravity
Backing Store State: NotUseful

Map State: IsViewable
Override Redirect State: no
Corners: +627+569 -3+569 -3-28 +627-28
-geometry 81x25-2-24

Is there a command line tool that will give me similar geometry info if I draw an area on my screen with a mouse?

I found a tool that will do the job called Shutter.
https://askubuntu.com/questions/583698/how-do-i-measure-dimensions-on-screen-without-using-a-ruler

It will give me the geometry data (widthxheight+x+y). But it is overkill for what I need. And I already have a screenshot tool Scrot. Also, scrot will give me the width and height dimension...but it won't give me the offset data.

Any suggestions?

How about you keep up to date on kernel development?

Many areas of the kernel have been moved to the user-space for security and convenience reasons. The Linux kernel could probably be best classified as a hybrid kernel these days. Originally it was monolith through and through, but that was a long time ago.

I'm not the guy you replied to, but I agree that 100% free software wouldn't work because of how easy it would be to steal and re-release games.

Maybe there could be a neutral 3rd party whose job is to make sure that all publicly released games are free of malware, while still keeping the code proprietary in all other aspects. Kind of similar to Nintendo's "seal of approval" back when that meant something.

However, since proprietary software can't ever be fully trusted, I think that all games should eventually be made FOSS (like Doom and Quake).

How about you try upgrading your shit to testing?
It's pretty good on this side of the fence.

Warning: don't use aptitude to upgrade from stable to testing. It will shit itself with dependency conflicts

If you wanna do it, change your /etc/apt/sources.list file to say "testing" instead of "jessie" everywhere, save it, do apt-get update and then apt-get dist-upgrade. That should work fine. And if you have any problems you can ask here from another computer, your phone, etc.

Remember to back your personal stuff up anyway

And use Ublock Origin and HTTPS Everywhere on Firefox, seriously man, it works.

I'm having a very hard time installing Debian for dual boot with Windows 8.1 on my desktop. I've never had trouble installing Debian for dual boot with Win7 on my laptop (but that's not UEFI based).

I have UEFI motherboard with a solid state that is split into 4 partitions (pic related) plus ~80 gigs of unallocated space. This unallocated space is where I want my Debian installation to go. I also have an nVidia graphics card (this might be related to the black screen problem).

As far as I can tell, windows is partitioned exactly how it's supposed to be (300 MB recovery tools, 100 MB for System, and 128 MB for MSR). EFI is on the 100 MB System Partition.

Initially, I tried installing Debian with a desktop environment selected. I think when I did this the first time, I forgot to select to install under UEFI. Installation went smoothly. However, Debian was all I could boot in to, and all I got was a black screen. I eventually managed to be able to boot back in to Windows and deleted the Debian partitions to start over.

Next attempt, I chose to install Debian under UEFI. Installation went smoothly again, but I was not given any option to boot in to Debian. Wiped Debian partition and start over...

A couple more attempts, and I was getting hung up at "grub-install dummy" at 50%. I even let it sit for 30 minutes, but nothing. Tried installing grub manually from my liveUSB, but at that point it was just way over my head.

Wiped Debian partition. Tried installing it again, without the graphical installer, and with no desktop environment selected. This time it randomly worked, I managed to see grub, and went to boot into Debian, but got the fucking black screen. No systemd, no bash, no blinking cursor, just a black screen.

Hard shutdown my computer, turned it back on, no grub, boot straight into Windows.

I've tried a lot of shit but I don't know what to do anymore. While typing this I just had an idea to go check my boot order.

I thought they fixed their installer. I recommend purging the entire drive for the install, make sure you have backups of course. Ubuntu is good as a first distro, but I would recommend switching to Fedora or Debian after a few weeks after getting dirty with GNU and Linux.

Not related, butI tried Ubuntu last year with 15.* and the installer was being shit. It was definitely on Debian's side since not only was Stretch's installer saying it had problems, Ubuntu's installer prompted up that Debian couldn't be installed on the system. Canonical is a fucking joke.

You should probably go with Debian. Cut the middleman, Ubuntu's derivative, mediocre trash in comparison.

Keep in mind, Debian's not as hand-holdy as Ubuntu, but there's still a wealth of resources to learn how to install and use it

Another friendly option I've heard of is openSUSE, but I have no experience with it so I can't comment.

Fedora is another popular distro, but I'm kinda iffy of recommending rpm distros to regular users.

Your hardware does not care what software is on it.
You are setting them in the BIOS, not in windows/linux.They operate on different levels

Also the link has a downloadable binary that you can run within your distro.
But not having your environment setup, will provide extra support.

Long story short, people started to work on riceDB, a package manager like tool for configs and lo/g/os should have been the showcase for it later. riceDB got forgotten and so lo/g/os.

A mega link: https://mega.nz/#!vocnTSDR!I4dpkby6Dew3O0ur3BUJEX1ULJDFMX2tLjFfX3-BWKw

Torrent for an official, but older version: magnet:?xt=urn:btih:3e69fa5202d10f9325c3de90e3e8830637184a9c&dn=logoslinux-2015.03.13-dual.iso&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.coppersurfer.tk%3A6969&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Fopen.demonii.com%3A1337&tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.leechers-paradise.org%3A6969

Next to this, there's no point in using lo/g/os, even for fun, since everything which was added (to plain Arch) was just some custon configs you can download from it's github page.

I am planning to live in a van. Part of this means that I will get rid of my laptop with an i7 in it running Windows 7. I want a machine with low power consumption, maybe a netbook?
