debating whether or not I should get a pair of "nice" in ear headphones for travelling, usually I have a nice setup at home (dt990 +amp/dac) and I don't give a fuck what I take with me on the bus etc (usually apple earbuds). But I've been looking at the shure se215's and they look really nice. Worth it or not? I travel a lot on the train for uni so I could use some better headphones

Lads, how do I tweak the EQ settings for my DT880 (600)? They're perfect for easy listening, jazz, classical, Deadmau5 type EDM, and soft rock, but they sound a little too metallic and harsh for harder rock. I just downloaded Equiliser APO btw, but I have no idea how to use it

It's been bothering me for a while, but

Do you guys use speakers as well? I've been using headphones only for 15 years because I still live in areas where the walls are made of thin paper and I don't want people to listen to the shit I'm listening. However at times I feel it's detrimental to my health. Like I should just be relaxing there, watching a movie or some shit with a pair of good speakers instead.
>>
>>55553869
Yeah I listen to speakers as well. I'm going to get Tannoy Reveal 502, I want to hear the sound of a good monitor. So far I've only used 2.1 systems.
>>
>>55552004
I prefer the K702
>>
>>55553022
I've purchased from both, addicted to audio seem to have a larger selection than minidisc though you might find some products that minidisc has which addicted to audio don't such as phillips fidelio X2.

minidisc price match, but if addicted to audio have a product at a lower price I don't bother price matching and just order online from whomever is cheaper.

Addicted to audio's free express shipping was pretty fast compared to minidisc if you live in a different state.

I don't know who has better aftermarket support though. Might be minidisc. I wish I lived close by to try before I buy.

There is only one headphone shop in QLD that I know off and their selection is very small.

Looking to sell my HD800 and I'm searching for a more "warm" signature. The HD800's have served me well but it's time to let go. I got tired of equalizing the bass to my liking but I loved the soundstage of these cans.

>>55554179
>I got tired of equalizing the bass to my liking
Tired of equalizing? What make you think you won't get tired of equalizing the
other headphones?

LCD2 will have less low/mid treble, but as for warmth? The treble recession could yield that impression.
>>
>>55554419
1. Drive requirements are physics and relatively simple at that, HD 800 is no exception here
2. This is completely unrelated to price
3. I'm not that anon with HD 800
4. Design or topology of the amplifier is irrelevant and has nothing you could generalize based on tubes/transistors. There are transparent tube amps and audibly colored transistor designs. I'd generally avoid any colored gear as they only end up being arbitraty signal processors which might or might not shift the sound signature to your liking. Amplifier which causes warm response on one pair of headphones might not do the same to another pair. An amplifier with audible levels of distortion is of terrible design.

HD 800's problem is directly tied into its magnitude response. This is not something an amplifier properly fixes. Very large Zout will make HD 800's midbass shift upwards making the headphones sound a bit warmer as a result of it. It doesn't nothing to the peaky treble - the main problem people have often have with it. An equalizer is the tool to use here but the anon didn't want to so a pair of headphones with a more preferable response is a better option.

>>55554543
They have notably different response and I'm fairly sure that anon had a HD 600.

I don't know the prices in NYC but have a look at the K7xx and K702 they might fit your description.

I haven't tried either but I hear K702 is reference design so basically neutral sounding you might find them a bit lacking in the bass department though. K7xx has better bass extension and has a colored response.

HD598 might fit your description as well seems within your price bracket too. Bass seems to have a sharper roll off than the K702 based on the FR charts so you might find it lacking in bass.

The fidelio X2 is a risky choice can go down to 200 on sale, you might not like them as vocals sound a little bit recessed due to the upper bass bump, I wouldn't call them V shaped though since treble peak is in line with the mids. They are not bassheads either.

oh forgot to add you will need a suitable amplifier for the K7xx and K702. You can probably drive both on your chinkpad but they might not sound great.

Fidelio X2 doesn't need a dedicated amp, runs fine off on board and so does the HD598.

Might want to look at the AD700x and 900x if you can find them within your price range I don't think they need a dedicated amp.

Might want to have a look at SHP9500 as well a lot of people seem to be praising it. Runs fine off on board.

> tfw I won't need to change my K702 because I found the perfect EQ
My intention was to buy a HD600 and compare it side by side with the K702, but honestly I'm going to keep my K702 for ever. The EQ I found is simply great and makes the headphone really neutral, at least to my ears. I slightly changed the EQ based on the recommendations of some of you and on Goldenears graphs. I have to say that toning the 6 khz down immediately produced a different sensation in terms of clarity and sound balance. I didn't need to lower the mid-bass, since I don't find it excessive at all on my K702. The sub-bass impact is now great.

Aluminum would be heavier than plastics and would be more easily bendable unless made out of a very hard alloy which in turn would make it even heavier. Even now the HD 800s aren't light headphones. There's nothing wrong with using plastics in the construction, as long as they are high quality, like the ones used on HD 800 are. Ear pads are the best part in my opinion as the microfiber is super comfy. The paint job is a bit iffy and can scrape off over time as shown in that photo.

A lot of the price comes from a small(ish) production yield, R&D costs and quality control, some from materials and a hefty chunk from markup due to their position in the market.

Here's a better question: why are you interested in DSD? If it's because your favorites music happened to be released that way, go ahead.
From a technical point of view, it comes up short.

The one-bit format resists any attempt at mixing, panning, equalizing, any sort of processing; these must be converted into a multi-bit format or not done digitally at all.
Standard DSD 64 has significant ultrasonic noise that requires moderate lowpass filters to keep from overloading tweeters or amplifiers with high frequency cruft, which will serve to limit upper frequency extension. It doesn't perform above 24/96 PCM, with more inherent noise and a lower resolution.
An intermediate lossy conversion step is required to be useful to the typical multi-bit PDM converter.

The HD800 already sound near perfect so it only makes sense for the update to correct the most problematic parts ie. bass and 6kHz spike, which Sennheiser did quite elegantly with the HD800S.

The price is actually okay considering it's only $300 more expensive than the old MSRP of the HD800 and far, far cheaper than competing """flagships""" like the Audez'e LCD-4 or HiFiMan HE-1000.

Is the channel imbalance supposed to be this terrible?

I've had the e10k for about 3 months, more or less and I've had tinnitus since august last year. I knew channel imbalance exists when dealing with these amp's potentiometers (i think even the more expensive like the schiit has imbalance, right?) but I thought it was insignificant (fiio's website says less than 0.4dB difference). I thought my right hear was just damaged, hear loss, and never much thought about it. Today I was playing xenoblade and while the characters were talking, I switched from the front to the line out on the back and the voices are now exactly in the middle of my head. Turns out my hears are still pretty equal, the imbalance is pretty significant

Basically, I'd like to know if I wasted 90€ on this or is my fiio faulty? I bought this through amazon so I think returning it now is out of the question...

Depends on the level of comfort

I used to buy real shitty headphones that would be comfy enough for me not to notice them. For about 15 years, I've been using headphones exclusively and not buying any set of speakers.

I'm currently using the Sennheiser HD 419 which I consider crappy compared to the ones I had before (HI2050) but at least I didn't spend a dime on them. What happened was, with the previous ones even though there's more pressure, I didn't notice them and my whole big fucking ear would fit inside nicely. With these, not only do I just feel like I have bought garbage, I notice that when I take them out after an hour or so the upper parts of my ears have fucking marks. It's disgusting. It's making me almost want to use speakers for once.

The issue I have with speakers is that I don't want people around to listen to what I do listen, which is a lot of different shit, along with, like anon here said >>55569471 some quality porn. So it's either headphones and speakers or just headphones.

I'm considering buying pic related and sure enough people around will notice what I'm listening to if I keep it loud enough, but quiet porn on speakers is still worse than slightly more audible porn on headphones

What kind of music do you listen to and how do you like it to sound?

Do you prefer an emphasis on bass or perhaps the music you listen benefits from clear mids? Maybe you enjoy some weird shit that needs your stuff so sound very bright.

Get neutral, then see what you want more or less of and go from there.

2 questions
are LCD 2-s worth for someone looking for more bass out of HD600s
and
how necessary is an amp for LCD 2-s or at least HD600s
currently running HD600s through rMBP
>>
>>55576192
LCD2s aren't really more bassy, their stock response is flatter in the sub bass compared to the HD 600s but unlike HD 600s they don't have any emphasis in the bass regions. HD 600 is a bit elevated in the mid bass which could make it sound more bassy than LCD2. EQ would fix the amount of bass on your HD 600 if that's the only thing you are looking for. For me that "upgrade" doesn't seem worth it and I see HD 600s as a superior headphone. You might see it different. Even if LCD2 had a response ideal to my liking, they would be too heavy and uncomfortable to use.

As for the amplifier, not necessary at all if your rMBP can drive them. If you get enough volume and don't hear any distortion or unwanted noises from the output, you are fine with your gear. LCD2s(especially new ones with Fazor) are more sensitive than the HD 600s so they would be louder from the same output.
>>

The Bose ANC sets are alright enough in active mode, at least. This does not necessarily hold true in passive.

There's the ATH-MSR7 ANC version, but the ANC there is not very effective. The passive isolation and sound is decent and probably one of the better/best sounding closed sets, but Bose beats it handily on comfort.

>Audio specialist Sennheiser has steamlined its classic HD 25 pro headphones portfolio to make product selection easier. “With seven variants to choose from, customers often asked ‘But which one is the HD 25?’,” said Jannik Schentek, portfolio manager Live Performance & Music. From March, there will be one classic HD 25 with two sister models – the HD 25 LIGHT, with has slightly different features and accessories, and the HD 25 PLUS, which adds additional accessories to further enhance the classic. The new versions can be easily recognised by the compact Sennheiser logo on the earpieces, with the version and impedance information now provided on the headband.

Spelling issues aside, the reduced lineup has been official for a few months.
The mainstay 30-year old headphone will take some time to clear out old stock, but you have the link to the renamed model already.

>I thought soundcards were a meme, like Razer keyboards and RGB LED graphics cards?

Not really. If you're hearing noise when turning your amp up a bit (or if it's really shit, even without an amp) then a soundcard will fix that. I could hear my mouse moving around before I got a sound card. Scrolling down with drag middle click in Firefox had a recognizable sound.

Also, interestingly enough switching to 24bit audio removes a rhythmic background noise from the audio with my setup. It's not that I'm hearing a difference between 16bit and 24bit, but most likely that it's being processed differently and that processing path results in less noise.

The gear I experienced this with:
Headphones: Sennheiser HD558
Amp: Pro-Ject Head Box S
Soundcard: Soundblaster Z (70€ no meme frills version, pic related)
Motherboard: Asrock z77 pro3

>>
does interferance and static build up over time?
i have no noticeable static right now however my PC is quite new (few months)
does this mean an external DAC wont have any value over a pci soundcard to me?
>>
>>55583651
>>55583744
>>55583777
The primary use of an external DAC is just that, convert a digital signal into an analog one and remove the hiss and interferance by isolating it.
If you are not hearing any hiss and interference or not enough to be audible through playback from whatever you are plugging it into, then it's just a waste of money to get one. Getting a DAC for """better sound quality""" is just as much a meme as expensive cables.
>>

>>
>>55584709
Yes, exactly. Places like Head Fi and SBAF would lead you to believe that expensive DACs do something differently than cheap ones to the 0s and 1s for a more 3D soundstage or some bullshit.
If a $149 external DAC does its job of getting rid of noise to a level lower than we can detect or care about and a $2299 can get even lower, what's the fucking point? Sure, a computer can tell the difference, but we are limited as humans and can't fucking tell the difference.
The whole high end market is powered by placebo.

I have no direct experience with the HD681 Evo so I can't comment on that without bringing up a graph but between the Pro 80 and HM5 which have pretty much the same price on UK Amazon, the Pro 80 has a large dip then spike in the treble and a fixed cable while the HM5 is overall more neutral but generally sloping down in the treble. HM5 is probably the more preferable one for your needs.

I'm not sure I really understand this part but there is nothing a $50 headphone can't do that a $400 one can. The "details" that people hear is due to factors such as a more coherent frequency response, lower distortion etc. Yes, the $400 one can be better in build, comfort and technicalities but it isn't necessarily 8x better than the $50 one. Even less so in higher price points with diminishing returns.

I have a big head, I need good headphones that will fit my head. I'm quite new to all this.

Was using an AHG K240, even that is too uncomfortable for me.

So right now I'm using a Koss Portapro, but it feels kind of cheap, real comfy though. Anything that's similar but less tacky? I quite like the sound from them though.

SHP9500 was going to be my next purchase, but now I'm worried it'll be uncomfortable.

Any other recommendations? I'm okay starting a collection of meme headphones.
>>
>>55585446
I can't guarantee that you will agree with the sound of the SHP9500 as it is more focused on treble emphasis whereas the PortaPro is pretty much just a midbass hump.
However, in terms of comfort, it is very good in this regard as the pads are huge and has a lot of space in them.

I can't imagine a DAC would even do anything about buzz or interference. A DAC is just a digital to analog converter. It takes a digital audio bitstream and converts that to a series of quantized voltage values. For instance if you have a 4-bit DAC it can output 16 different voltage states each corresponding to an input digital value between 0000 and 1111. After that it's put through a reconstruction filter to smooth out the stepwise waveform into an actually sinusoid. The filtering is where the loss occurs. The higher the resolution of your DAC the closer you are to closer you are to the true analog waveform. I think 24-bit is the standard for most audio DACs. Having a higher resolution DAC is just paying more for diminishing returns.

Buzz and interference is most likely caused by improper grounding and ground loops. An audio isolation transformer is probably a better bet for getting rid of that than a DAC is.
>>
I just bought a pair of hd598s from the Amazon sale, currently just using them with my desktop and it's on board audio. What kind of difference would a DAC/amp give me? Is it worth purchasing one or is my onboard audio good enough?

That's around the range a smartphone could do.

>>55586634
16 bits for 16 bit audio.
Grounding issues do come up, but having a converter less exposed to sources of interference solves lots of issues. It would hopefully have a lower noise floor as well.
>>
>>55586667
Less midbass bloat due to lower output impedance. If you are getting enough volume and not hearing hiss, then you're fine.
>>

Fidelio X2 is pretty fuckin comfy albeit a little heavy, probably well above your target budget.I don't know if they still pop up for 200 USD on sale.

Its elastic band stretches a fair bit and they have increased the size of the top support to accommodate larger heads. There pads are mc large huge and thick as well, fairly comfy.

Sound signature has an emphasis on bass similar to the porta pros and are built like a motherfucking tank.

I don't have a large head myself but tyll does, you can check his review on them.

You might want to look for other offerings as well and compare them.

Safest bet is to get yourself a more neutral sounding all rounder pair if you are unsure what sound signature you want.

If you liked the porta pros chances are you'd to have a fair amount of bass but not so much that it ends up dark sounding, in that case X2 has you covered.

But there probably are better headphones out there at the same price range. Or lower price range headphones with a similar signature.

SHP9500 might be weak in the bass department, M50X is closer in price with better bass, not sure if they'd be comfy on big heads and I hear there are way better alternatives for the money.

Digital signals have error correction, while analog does not. Hissing is usually a form of interference, so you want to convert the signal into analog at a later point hoping that there's less interference.
