It's just marketing. An OS is such a complex piece of hardware that it's absolutely impossible to decide which one is "the most advanced". They all have their advantages and disadvantages.

iOS is a legitimately retarded mobile OS but OSX is actually quite good. And that's coming from someone who spent 7 years trying to convince their family that their Macbooks were shit.

Trips of truth speaks.

OSX is probably the best UNIX-like OS out there. Once Windows 7 loses support I'm turning my server and laptop into a Hackintosh. Stay jelly Linuxfags, OSX actually has support and looks great.
>>
>>55512111
What makes OSX good?
>>
>>55512178
Not him but OS X has all the reasons I used Linux over Windows while also having commercial application support that Linux doesn't have. It's like the best of both worlds.
>>
>>55512178
It's basically a BSD (albeit with somewhat less functionality) without the autistic UI.
It has every feature you could find on any Linux distro (down to the GNU coreutils) but with an actually polished userland and good performance, and it even packs some pretty comfy "power-user" features such as a scripting language you can use to automate a bunch of tasks among other things.
As for developement (mainly for C/C++) it's pretty much indifferenciable from any Unix-based system considering it's almost the same kernel.
I'm not denying that every computer sold by Apple is terribly overpriced, but if your main concern is usability, stability, and having a solid developement machine, then that's your best choice.
>>
>>55511382
But it doesn't lag.
Provides a stable experience.
Has high quality apps.
>>
>>55512286
Maybe after they ditch that toy filesystem. Until then they aren't even close to the same level.

>>

>>
>>55512309
iOS looks pretty (though that's subjective) but it's absolutely gimped if you want to do anything beyond checking your Facebook profile.
>no filesystem access
>no default apps except browser (and even that can barely qualify as a default app)
Those two things alone make iOS absolute dogshit.
>>
>>55512329
Webm of an old iPhone 4. The old versions of Android were laggy too, remember?
>>
>>55512329
Reminds me of when I used iOS 7. I could type a whole sentence and it'd freeze on the first word, a few seconds after I finished typing it'd spit out the other 5 or 10 words in a second

This actually happened:

>go to hold my presentation
>I don't have a laptop so ask to borrow somebody else's
>“Is a macbook okay?”
>“Sure, thanks”
>“No problem, my presentation is after yours and this way I'll already be set up”
>plug in USB dongle for wireless presenter
>OS X prompts me to “please press the button next to the left shift key on your new keyboard” as if I'm an idiot who can't tell whether he's using a 104 or 105-key keyboard
>the dongle doesn't have a shift key, press random buttons
>“Keyboard not recognized. Try again or choose from a list:”
>Pick ANSI, surely that should work if it's just pretending to be a standard USB keyboard (and only sending page up/down either way)
>It doesn't work

Then somebody else offered their laptop for me to use, which had windows on it.

>Plug in the presenter dongle
>It works out of the box, no prompts involved
>Plug in the USB drive
>Drive's full of shitty OS X temp files
>Hold my presentation
>Macfag comes up to me afterwards and asks if he can borrow my USB drive to transfer his presentation from the macbook to the windows laptop

Apple, not even once

>>55512320
Name one actually realistic of scenario that might pop up because of the "toy filesystem". I know it has problems, but they aren't nearly as relevant as you make it out to be.

>>55512286
UNIX + proprietary support is the main reason why many departments at my university use OS X as their main driver. With our experiments we usually need to use software suites that are primarily written for Linux systems (Scientific Linux and CentOS usually, sometimes Ubuntu is directly supported as well), for example the ROOT framework is a little better known. Compiling those on Windows would obviously be a dead end, but for OS X you usually just have to solve a number of linking problems. Using stuff like homebrew you usually get your stuff running at some point.
>>
>>55512466
On the bright side, at least it was one of the generations which still had two USB ports and a separate charging port, so at least he didn't have to fumble around with adapters to get both the USB drive and the USB presenter plugged in at the same time (while also being on AC power).

Unless you're changing your hardware every single day, there's zero need to reinitialize and check every hardware component on boot, so hibernating the kernel on shutdown and restoring it shaves a ton of time off boot.

Coming from Linux and having to use Mac I can confirm that this is absolute bullshit. Things like shortcuts, window management, terminal emulators, cli utils and package management don't even come close to what every GNU/Linux distro offers.

Using Mac is a constant struggle of inconvenient ways to make windows behave how you want, if it's possible at all. The mouse/GUI reliance is apparent through the entire OS and makes it unfit for power users, the CLI tools are grossly outdated, brew a shit, iTerm2 a shit, the animations make everything feel slow and it's frustrating, finder has shit key bindings, don't use finder, spotlight is disfunctional botnet recommending websites instead of actual installed programs occasionally, the app store is shit.
Expose, spaces, launchpad, widgets!? They're all shit, a better Linux alternative exists.

I'd recommend Mac to, and only to, people who already have a Mac computer and who are completely tech illiterate.

There many things that could easily clog up that 126 storage in 2 years of use. Hiqh quality Music rip, 4k photos/video, Offline location map storage, Games , Apps, Updates, etc.

In addition external storage is useful for storing a clone image of your OS/Apps. That way you have a copy of your content if your phone breaks, get stolen, or comprised.. Especially useful if you plan to upgrade a lot too.

Apple still advises their users to backup their shit to the cloud, and Itune even provide some back up for your content that your download/purchase. You're probably renting your collection on a music streaming app, anyway.

This. Even MS has had POSIX compatibility layers in Windows since the fucking 90's. If they wanted to add in even more and achieve full POSIX and apply for the cert it still doesn't make Windows UNIX. It would be Windows with POSIX compatibility, a UNIX-like.

I suffer from it everyday at work.
For example, plug headphones, put the volume slider some around the middle, unplug. Now you cant move the volume slider for the speakers, you have to plug your headphones again and put the volume slider to the lowest. Unplug again, now you can change volume for the speakers.

Another problem, turn on your Mac Mini with a cellphone connected to a usb port. There is a chance OS will fail to boot. You get an error screen saying it failed to boot. Boot again, fails again in a different way this time you get to the desktop and before your programs finish loading it crashes, boot again, fails again.

And this happens with the last version of El Capitan.

Many people fall for the "fragmentation" meme and basically think that free software projects are lower quality, but I've found that this is _never_ true. The worst problems I've had, even on Arch, are due to stuff like valve or nvidia releasing buggy software and then making us wait on a fix since their software is proprietary.

You'd be amazed how much power the users hold in the world of free software. Even just filing bug reports or telling someone about a problem you're having can get it fixed in under an hour at times. There's really not a good equivalent to this with proprietary software, especially since there are less people to work on it.

not quite sure what you mean, hibernation works perfectly well under Linux as well. I usually use suspend tho, unless I know there's gonna be a power outage or I need to switch to windows, which requires a reboot.

That's hibernating the entire memory, not just the kernel so that the OS can skip initialization.
