I know you guys are pretty into this mechanical stuff, but at what point do you stop? When you convince yourself that you absolutely have to design your own switch molds for audiophile-like gains (i.e. nonexistent)?
It's just a keyboard, damn it.

>When you convince yourself that you absolutely have to design your own switch molds
If someone were to do that with a design that isn't mx-style or something else that already exists, that'd be pretty cool actually.

I don't know about audiophiles, but when it comes to keyboards modifications such as different keycaps, different springs, different backplate materials or even the exact same switch design (i. e. gateron vs. modern day cherry in terms of smoothness) from different companies can actually make a very obvious difference. Either in how it feels to use the keyboard, how it sounds, or how it looks (I haven't seen an artisan that releases smell upon keypress yet). If that's worth all the fuss about keyboards to you or if you're just fine with a cheap chinkboard with the stock laser-etched abs caps, that's up to you. But even someone with no understanding could notice the difference in a direct comparison.

Unless their fingers are dead, like that guy from the last thread.

/g/ents I'm on the market for a new keyboard.

It must be:
>$100 or less (But i'm willing to spend more if I feel like it's justified)
>backlit
>roughly 75% (anything without a numpad)
>whatever switches are best for prolonged typing (I don't game)

Right now I'm looking at KBT Race II but I can't seem to find one for sale in Canada.

Any tips/suggestions are much appreciated.

Here are some tits for your trouble.
>>
Never used a mechanical keyboard before so I don't know what switch I'd prefer although everyone I know praises blues. Are blues good for a beginner or should I go with reds?

Budget isn't an issue, all I ask for is dedicated media keys because I spend a lot of time doing music production.
>>
>>55431105
I like browns for music production for easy doubletaps
But I also use a 60% so I have room for other peripherals on my desk

Just got my hands on some Gateron tactile clears, aka. Zealios. Is this a fucking joke? These things are nowhere near as good as people claim them to be. They aren't horrible, but not even close to being worth 0,75 a piece, or even 1$.
I swear to god, the more hyped switches I try, the worse they get. At least they were cheap and still much better than orange Alps.

If not, I'll just go ahead and use regular clears with their clear upper housing, that doesn't seem to bad at least.

I'm anon that posted pic related some time ago

long story short I found this kb-6151 in old storage room

finaly agot it home today and it turns out it's fried (probably one of integrated circuts but not sure)

is there any value I can get out of it orher than desoldering switches?
>>
>>55440155

clean it up and buy a soarer's converter to use it with USB

blue ALPS are among the best clicky switches around

>>55440183
>finaly agot it home today and it turns out it's fried (probably one of integrated circuts but not sure)
>>
>>55440196

why do you think it's fried? a teensy can act as the controller, but chances are you just don't have the right adapters
>>
>>55440085
I don't think that Alps are onjectively better than Cherry, but then again I'm pretty weird. I prefer Matias QC to every other tactile Alps switch, dislike Topre and it seems like I prefer Cherry MX Clear over Zealios.
>>55440040
Just tried lubing them a little and it seems that saves the switch for me. Hooray!

Clean it up a bit and blow all the dust out and take good pictures of it and the switches. Throw it up on ebay with Blue ALPS in the title. Youll shit your pants at how much it goes for.

the pin-out doesn't matter if your adapter isn't made for the right protocol/matrix

that switch on the back toggles this somewhat, but it still has to output XT protocol

I must be cursed with bad luck, which in the end results in great luck. Let me blog about my mechanical keyboard purchases.

First story - I ordered a set of ISO Nordic pbt keycaps from corus-kb's site. 3 months later, they hadn't arrived, and they didn't reply to any of my emails, support messages, facebook messages etc. So I made a paypal dispute, which they didn't reply to - and then I got a refund. Couple weeks later, they arrived - after I had ordered it again from Amazon. Gave one set to a friend.

Second story - ordered a set of keycaps from ukkeycaps - it arrived pretty quickly and the communication was great. Then a week later, it arrived again. I did send the second set back to them, cause they were bros.

Third story - ordered a UK layout Novatouch from amazon, with shipping guaranteeing its arrival 3 days later. A week went by, so I emailed amazon support, and they refunded my shipping cost. Some more days went by, and I emailed them again, and they refunded the whole thing with lots of apologies.
And now it just arrived. I did order the same keyboard again from another site two days ago, hopefully my cancellation of that order goes through before they ship it.

Everything in the world of mechanical keyboards comes double it feels like.

ok, so why is iso better
why is rotating the enter key 90° making it further away from home row better?

speaking of the JIS layout, why the hell didn't they put the ]} where the ANSI backslash is
that would have made so much more sense
literally no reason why JIS should have an ISO enter key.

at least in some ISO layouts you can pretend you're putting a more frequently used key there.

I might try brown switches, maybe I wouldn't fuck up my typing as much and they'd still be light.
>>
>>55444828
Have you tried Gateron yellows? They're lighter than blacks but heavier than reds.
I'm considering them, since I'm a bit afraid of blacks being too heavy.
>>
>>55444948
Nope. I've had the Cherry black switches for a few years and then bought a Magicforce with Gateron reds. The Magicforce is defective though, so I'm sending it back.

Considering my options now, I might look into those yellows though, it might be a nice compromise if they're in-between red and black.

bolt modding is only a necessity from the cheap plastic rivet construction.

most quality boards don't need it, there's just an abundance of model ms. you're paying for the color alone.

The Caps button doesn't work, the "#" key writes as a "\" despite it being mapped as "NUHS"

And the spacebar doesn't work

On the PC it doesn't work, it mongs it out, requiring a re-start to restore it to normal.

I used makefile on git bash to compile it. I flashed it using teensy's provided software, Just load the .hex file and done.

The Fn key enables the third thing on each key. Like Fn+1 = F1.

The Caps gets replaced by Control of Caps on those boards because it's far more convenient. You don't hit Caps Lock enough to warrant using it on that position on the board.

I ordered one that just arrived yesterday, been using it for a bit now.
It's different. My other keyboard is a MX Blue, and the Novatouch feels about the same weight, but pretty sure it bottoms out quicker. The bottom out thud is very deep and very pleasant.
I think I prefer my blues. The tactile bump of the blues is just so good, and the topre switch doesn't seem nearly as responsive. It feels exactly as you'd expect a rubber dome to feel - initial resistance, then essentially linear after the point. I prefer the actual tactile bump. Which is why I'm gonna get clears for my next board.
If you have the money to throw at it for experimenting with different switches etc. go for it. Personally I wouldn't say it's worth the price tag - fortunately I got it for free.

I actually prefer the sound of every switch I've tried so far, with the exception of orange Alps, to unsilenced Topre. That includes tactile gaterons. I think silenced should be way better, but since I disliked Topre as a whole I got no interest in trying it again, I'd also need a HHKB type S+55g domes and I don't want to drop that kind of money on an experiment.
Experimented a little with my tactile Clears/Zealios, turns out they are pretty Ok with Cherry bottom housings and a little lube. Nothing too special though. Matias QC are still my favorite.

Gateron tactile clears.
A limited edition meme that's out of stock.
>>
>>55457369
I don't know either. As I said, I'm not impressed. It's true that Cherry MX aren't as good as they used to be and Gaterons are better ootb, but once you mod them (like 95% of the Zealios buyers) they are pretty much the same. One has more keywobble, the other one is a little less tactile. However their bottom housing sucks worse than my childhood. I don't know how people can defend this shit, on the other hand they also tolerate some of the most annoying sperglords I've ever seen in my entire life, so I guess the mech community is a little weird overall.
>>
>>55457465
It's not. Zeal always wants WKL to get out of stock, since he hopes to this day that Gateron stops doing business with him, but he always gets new stock.
http://winkeyless.kr/product/gateron-switch-pcb-mounted/
I don't think Gateron tactile clears are the meme, but Zealios. GTC are pretty ok actually, since they are at least rather cheap. Zealios on the other hand are expensive and essentially the same shit.

I'm probably a turbo autist for being bothered by it that much, but that slight metallic "slurping" during the upstroke and the very slight ping during downstroke drives me fucking nuts.I highly prefer the more muffled sound of the cherry bottom housing.

I knew I wasn't crazy. I don't know how bad it is with the clear lower housing, since mine are the black ones, but I dislike that so much.
>>55457884
Sometimes I feel that way as well, especially when I still owned and used the Topre from time to time. I guess it just takes some time getting used to it, but I'm at the point where I don't even notice that anymore. But maybe it's due to my SA-keycaps as well. I feel like those helped a lot, they are pretty rare though, at least where I'm from.

a lot worse
>>
>>55458018

>>

I think it's due to me hitting the keys more in the center or something. The wobble itself (when brushing over the keys) is pretty much the same as on OEM.

>>55458065

it was extremely bad with zealios

I don't notice it on my board with Zealios, because they are all lubed, and it really changes the noise. But if they weren't I think it would really bother me.

>>55458018
do find the gateron/zealio wobble acceptable on cherry profile? or is it really with SA keycaps when it bothers you?
>>
>>55458088
Well I'm speaking of Matias, but to be fair keywobble can't get much worse, no matter the profile.

I'm looking for a well-made keyboard. Simple design, as little branding as possible, preferably made in a first-world country. Black or grey.

I'm not sure about switches. I'm thinking greens or clears. I like a serious switch. Why is this so hard to find?

a WASDv2 was the closest I found (not gonna use their cheap keycaps) but it's expensive and apparently not very well-made.

I just want a Model F with a modern layout and a super key. Why is that so hard to ask. I wan't a ten-pound monster.

around the 100$-ish pricerange.

I became really conscious of the environment so now I use green backlight to save energy. When it gets really hot I set it to blue to cool down a bit.

Filco is a Japanese brand, but I think the OEM is in Taiwan.

The only option that I'd know of that's made in Japan would be Topre keyboards. At least my HHKB says "made in japan" on the back.

You could also just drop your ridiculous ideas that absolutely nothing of any quality comes from Asia. But that'd require you to think like an adult.

Filco, Ducky or non-backlit cooler master, KUL ES-87.

The really high quality keyboards that come from Asia are Korean customs with CNC'd & anodized aluminum cases, but those easily cost 500 bucks or more.

On amazon all you'll find are "mechanical feeling" keyboards. Which are pretty much rubber dome keyboards with a switch on top. Like a bad topre, and topre is already bad.
