I like writing bots, and everything can talk to an IRC server since it is so simple.

Also, it has a ton of integration written for it that doesn't exist with other forms of chat, and there are a lot of very helpful IRC rooms.

IRC is probably the only instant-messaging method that's fully open-source. This includes both the server and client, and when properly set up it allows for perfect secrecy of messages in transit and storage.

Irc isn't open source, it's just a documented protocol. There are heaps of other chat protocols that are fully documented as well
