HDMI cannot drive multiple displays from the one port. GPU manufacturers design their GPU's with HDMI, DVI, VGA being legacy ports and that is why for 3 monitors or more DisplayPort is required. HDMI uses the same controllers as DVI/VGA on the chip.

DisplayPort is the successor to DVI, just as DVI was to VGA.
